suspicious minds falling in love while dreaming in a jailhouse in the ghetto...

Thank you. Thank you very much. That title was hard to write.

Elvis is hanging out with the four remaining Idols and nary a fried banana sandwich is in sight. But I did catch a glimpse of Nikko Smith and Justin Guarini. Doesn't Guarini have a job?

Never mind. It's the show that could be called Three Men and a Katharine.

Four kids, eight songs, one king. And when it's all sang and done, three will remain to get to go home for lavish homecomings and in two weeks, as Ryan reminds us, two normal people will suddenly become abnormal people, singing for their suppers in front of gazillions of people.

Because THIS is American Idol.

And THIS is how, on early impressions, I've ranked them, subject, as usual, to review and reorder and, as always, from worst to first:

Katharine McPhee (Hound Dog/All Shook Up). The girl is all over the place! Yowzer. She's on the catwalk, she's lounging on the judges table, she's on the stage, and midway through goes silent with her back to the audience. I think she's out of breath, but she admits to Randy that she just flat forgot the lyrics. (The sound you just heard was Melissa McGhee laughing her panties off.) Randy is non-committal. Paula likes that she had fun. Simon compares the performance to a manic high school audition and tells her she's lucky she has a second song.

Katharine McPhee (Can't Help Falling in Love). Mottola tells Katharine to emote, but not to be loud. He hasn't been watching the show, evidentially. She starts the song at yell volume and finishes the song the same. She shows no nuance to the lyrics. Randy says at least it was better than her first outing. Paula thinks she's pretty. Simon basically says yuck. Me too.

Chris Daughtry (A Little Less Conversation). Okay, in the sense of full disclosure, this is one of my absolutely least favorite Elvis songs, and I don't like it any better from Chris, so I'll let the judges talk, but I won't rank it high. Randy says hawt for about the fourth time. Paula says he showed personality and Simon calls it "flat" and less preferable to his first performance.

Taylor Hicks (Jailhouse Rock). Taylor says he's gonna finally have some fun with an Elvis theme. Starting in the audience, he jailhouse rocks his way to the stage in the typical Taylor fashion. And, as expected, Simon hates it in his typical fashion, calling it a cheap imitation. I hate even remoting agreeing with Simon, and as much as I loved the performance, it really wasn't much in the way of anything vocally new. But that don't mean it wasn't fun.

Chris Daughtry (Suspicious Minds). We find out that Chris wears boxer briefs. Oh good, cause I was wondering. Tommy Mottola calls his vocal sound "incredible." He dons sunglasses for the first half of the song so we don't get to see the "Chris stare," but removes them halfway through so we don't go through withdrawals. Paula says she'll see him in the finals. Hasn't she said that to pretty much everyone over five years? Never mind. Randy says meh and Simon says it "worked." I thought I knew what I thought, but then my mind became suspicious.

Taylor Hicks (In The Ghetto). Again, being forced to cram a beautiful song into a 90-second frame sometimes makes them speed up the arrangement. I enjoyed every single second of the performance, but, if he were to record this number, I would hope it could be slowed. And that's my only criticism, except to say that the sitting on the steps thing is getting on my last nerve. Randy says perfect song, perfect key. Paula is Paula. And Simon tells him he's just sung his own ticket into the next round. (Hey! Nice Simon remarks for Taylor!)

Elliott Yamin (If I Can Dream). I was concerned about this song that I adore, because it's one of those famous start-soft finish-big Elvis songs that make Elvis Elvis. And unfortunately with only 90 seconds, it's tough to build the momentum needed to really sell it, but I will say this: I would knock down elderly people and step on children to buy Elliott's recording of it. Randy loves it. Paula, though not crying this time, says it's his personal best. Simon reminds Elliott he's the underdog, as if he hasn't figured that out yet, but says it's the best of the night, even though it's just the third song. (Hey! Nice Simon remarks for Elliott!)

Elliott Yamin (Trouble). Holy crap. Randy says personal best. Paula says personal best. Simon applauds his fighting spirit and tells him he deserves to continue to next week.

Yes, yes, I know I'm an on-the-record Elliott fan, and my objectivity may be a little out of focus, but with the possible exception of Taylor's second song, he far outperformed each of them. Now I have phones to attend.

My bottom two stays the same (that is if they're drawing out the two): Chris and Katharine with Katharine singing us out. Anything else is a travesty.

So, what's your verdict?

I thought Chris's "Little Less Conversation" was bad. It was like he was reading the lyrics off a teleprompter. I have tired of his angry white guy act and I am making the surprise pick that he is going home tomorrow.

Of course, I could be wrong (I am very likely to be wrong).

The Pimp Spot, which has meant safety for everyone this year, might not protect VCM. Remember last year in week 9, Tracheotomy Boy went in the Pimp Spot and got whacked. Up until this point last year, the person going last had not smelled the bottom 3 either.

Coincidence? Hmmmmmm . . . .

Oh Dave, you're just like me with the trends. Thanks. I love the trends. Plus, there's never been a male third place finisher, so that might keep her safe too. But she was really not good tonight.

My husband and I had a conversation. He's a huge Chris fan. Went like this:

Chris was the best.
No, Elliott was the best.
Taylor was good.
Yes, Taylor was good.
Katharine sucked.
Katharine totally sucked.

What happened to the woman formerly known as Priscilla Presley???

Hmmm, seems that there were a few MIA stars this season.

Good show though!

Thanks Jennifer!

Elliott rocked tonight. Taylor did Taylor. Chris and katherine weren't 100%. I wonder if Chris' voice was bothering him after last week? Seemed like he held back, esp. in the 2nd song.

It is time for Katherine to pack up her maternity outfits and hit the road...(that first outfit made her look preggers again)

She hit as many bad notes as Pickles did, and I think she has lived out her last life... even Kats run out of em.

The appendage with ears was no better, can they give Katherine and Chris the boot together????
How can anyone think this guy is goodlooking? Bleccch

Eliot and Taylor ROCK

When I first saw Priscilla I thought oh look, it's Lisa Marie. Then I said Holy Crap! Someone's had somework done. Isn't she like 60 or something?!

I really liked Kat starting out and have tried to keep cheering for her, but she just sings too hard. Lighten up! After the first one I thought, well, unless she blows the 2nd one out of the water, she's going home. I think it's gonna be down to Taylor and Elliott at the end. I think that would be totally cool because Elliott was such the homely underdog and Taylor started off sort of as a novely. Like, sure, what the hell, let's give him a chance. I think Taylor will end up as the Idol. That would be rad, because it just seems so unlikely. I love both he and Elliott. In fact, I like all 4 that are left, which is not ususal. There's generally one in the finals who I just want to strangle, but they all seem like nice folks. And they all kick ass.

Elliott out performed everyone tonight singing wise. Elliott tends to be a bit boring performance wise, but his voice never waivers. I am a big fan of both Elliott and Taylor's. Keep in mind, this is a singing contest and let the best singer win. Katharine should go home (as great looking and all that...) she did not perform well.

The best shocker of them all, if truly the odd season curse exists would be for Chris to go home. SO I will go out on a limb here and predict that Chris is going home because people are tired of his dead eyes, and the way he screams his songs.

I know it will break Simon's greedy little heart, because he sees Chris as the most bankable of the 4, but he's a one trick pony. He does nothing different from week to week, and he will make a very nice front man for a band somewhere.

Going home: Chris

wow what an interesting night. I think this showed why so few artists try to tackle Elvis, at least not seriously. Elliot was very good for Elliot, but sorry, he's no Elvis. Taylor had fun, but again, he ain't no Elvis. Chris is Chris, I like Suspicious minds of his two, and would really have enjoyed it had he NOT gone to his typically yelling at the end. Almost Acid Elvis, yuck. and Kat. Poor Kat. Someone needs to teach her that smiling while you sing puts you in the WRONG mood for emotional songs. We don't want a 'happy' singer, we want an 'emotional' singer. she smiles too damg much, and I think she's hot, but I can't vote for those performances. And no Priscilla is Kat. Let alone Big E.

so, now that I have a new found appreciation for why so many millions still love Elvis, Elliot and Taylor did the best overall. Chris had moments, and Kat, well, I did like the style of mixing two songs into one. But that was ONE terrible rendition of Hound Dog. No wonder most artists are afraid to cover that song :)

As much as I love to look at her, Kat deserves to go. If she somehow pulls a rabbit out of a hat and all the guy vote still swings her way, I think I'll pray it's Chris who gets cut. I have always enjoyed Taylor the most on the show, but he is a little vocally limited, though maybe not as much as Chris, but Chris has a great recording voice, so I do sort of rank him better than Taylor vocally. Kat and Elliot have the best vocals, but Elliot is the one who is "earning" the right to win. He is "improving" and learning and stretching. And heck, he's from Richmond (only 70 miles away) so I almost have to like him :) Kat can sing, but I think Simon nailed it, when mentioning how she is like a stage performer. She'd be great in Cats or Fiddler on the Roof or something like that :)

Taylor is the most entertaining of the 4, he needs to stay, plus you have to give a boost to a poor fella who's hair is grey by 25! And Elliot has done everything we could want out of a future Idol by growing, reminds me of Diana coming out of nowhere to barely loose to Fantasia. I think I'll be voting from Elliot from now on unless Taylor hits one out of the park next week or Elliot implodes :)

Isn't it true that hearing these kids, as good as they are, doing Elvis just serves as a reminder of how incredibly special Elvis was. They were good for them, but an Elvis only comes around about once in a lifetime. I'm so happy he was in mine.

JJ, I agree with Chris being a good frontman for INXS. I don't think JD Fortune should have won. It should have gone to Mig or Marty. But I'm a sucker for accents and I think that's what I loved about M&M. JD turned me off when he wouldn't do the group song.

I don't have much to say about tonight. Kat was not great at all, but I still think she's better than Chris and a tad better than Taylor overall. She's been my fave from the beginning which keeps me voting for her. I think Elliott has the best vocals out of any of them and tonight's performance definitely proved it. My boyfriend's favorite Elvis song is I Can Dream and Elliott made it even better!

Let's all keep our fingers crossed for our favorites tomorrow!

Before I give my opinions, I must give huge props to jennifer for this little tidbit:

"My husband and I had a conversation. He's a huge Chris fan. Went like this:

Chris was the best.
No, Elliott was the best.
Taylor was good.
Yes, Taylor was good.
Katharine sucked.
Katharine totally sucked."

Dude, that was hilarious, I was laughing my butt off. Nice job, once again, jennifer.

And wow!! Priscilla!! She was looking a little... I don't know... creepy, or something, know what I mean???

Anyway, here goes:

Taylor: Sorry, but I LOVED "Jailhouse Rock". I don't like how he started in the way back, but everything else was great, it was totally fun and I thought he did great on the vocals.

The next song he did, "In the Ghetto", was very good. I agree with you Jennifer, why can't they all just stand up on the stage?? Get out of the audience and stop sitting on those dumb steps. Anyway, I enjoyed the performance a lot, I hope to see Taylor in the final 2.

Chris: For goodness sakes, I just don't like this kid. Undeniably great singing voice, but he is SO BORING. "Suspicious Minds" bored me to tears. "A Little Less Conversation" I thought started out kind of well and then he went all screamy on it and I got up to go to the bathroom. C'mon. Screaming Elvis? Stop it.

Elliot: Can any of us say enough good about this guy? He was downright awesome, both his perfomances were the best of the night. "If I Can Dream" was great and "Trouble" was even better. Oh please, oh please, I hope all those Elliot voters got busy tonight and I hope all the Paris voters turned his way.

Katharine: Eeesh. That was rough. That first medley she did... it was like she was on crack... or had ants in her pants... or SOMEthing. Her weirdo dancing and her forgotten lyrics totally distracted me from what could have been a pretty decent performance. The comments that Simon had for "Can't Help Falling in Love" were dead on. I mean, I don't think anyone will ever sing that song better than Elvis, but that was just hideously bad. Don't know if I ever heard a song more oversung in my life. I seriously could see Tommy Mattola at home screaming at the TV, "I said no yelling!! I said with FEELING!!! Why did I even talk to you?!?!?"

So there's my thoughts.

Bottom 2:

who should: Katharine and Chris

who will: Katharine and Elliot

who goes home: IT BETTER BE KATHARINE.

I can't help myself, every time Elliott sings I find myself sitting with an ear to ear grin. I thought he did a great job tonight. Chris was ok, I can't help wondering if he can get any other expression on his face, he looks like a Stepford Wife, the way he's always stareing. Taylor was good too, the first song. The second was ok. Kat should be the one to go home, if people actually vote for the better performances tonight. I dread Wednesdays, I'm always afraid Elliott is going. Good Luck Elliott. Jennifer I love this blog. and love your sense of humor. I'll miss you when AM is over.

Wasn't feeling this Elliot love on his version of "Trouble." Didn't it strike anybody else as being completely unconvincing? Decent singing voice, likeable guy, but he just couldn't sell the tough guy thing. I'm shocked to read all of you buying into it. A good singing voice is one thing, but knowing what to do with it is something else. "Trouble" and "evil" that guy isn't and the performance lacked sincerity because of that.

It's funny how the Elliott momentum really didn't start building until they ran some stuff about him being the poor sick kid growing up. It's strange how much better someone sounds when you start feeling sorry for them.

you know, maybe Elliot is like Jerry Rice in the Dancing with Stars. Elliot has been the big underdog this year, and he's worked really hard to learn stage presence, much in the way JR struggled with his dancing, yet when you think about it, he grew the most of all of those contestants. He had no skills to start the show, but by the end he was able to dance a little. Elliot has gone from sheared head to almost having a look, and he is getting some personality across each week.

If you compare where the other 3 were the first week of the semi's, with stage presence, personality, swagger, etc., Elliot wasn't even in the building. Now he's about to crash the party. That's what I like, he's doing what Simon is always talking about: growing each week, listening to the judges, especially Simon, taking instruction from the guests, picking songs that fit "you" with arrangements "you" can sing. that's also why I think of him like Diana Digarmo. I never thought she'd make it past the first 4 to 6 weeks. Then she kept hanging around, and by the top 4, she was just getting better and better, and wasn't that finals the closet vote ever? like 1,000 votes diff between her and Fantasia? Elliot reminds me of her. Unsuspecting, not polished, taking this competition to heart and learning how to be a better singer than when they arrived, versus just being who they were when they arrived. Heck, even Taylor has changed. Kat and Chris are mostly the same, just Kat is nice to look at for us guys :)

Love this blog, Jennifer!

Here are my picks, worst to first:

Katherine - "I Can't Help Falling in Love With You" Beautiful girl, beautiful voice, but she was all over the map pitch-wise. There were so many off notes in the middle of that song, I almost muted. And she totally oversang it. It was just weird.

Katherine - "Hound Dog/All Shook Up" I had really low expectations of these songs for her, so I wound up liking the performance more than I thought I would. Even so, Simon was right on the money. Bad audition.

Taylor - "Jailhouse Rock" I actually liked his rendition, even though it could never touch Elvis' version. But then, NOBODY can touch Elvis. That's why he's the King. The song allowed Taylor's personality to come out. The only problem with that is his personality "looks" a little karaoke, even if his voice isn't. I prefer his more soulful singing.

Now it gets tough for me...

Chris - "Suspicious Minds" I liked it because I just love Chris' voice, but it wasn't a stellar performance. I'm into his "AWG" routine; it suits him and so he sells his songs well.

Chris - "Little Less Conversation" I know most people didn't care for his rendition, but I totally dug it. He's got a rich, deep voice and this song really showcased it in the beginning. Then he worked it to fever-pitch in the way he does. It was vintage Chris. I know it's not Elvis, but NOBODY IS! Better to make it your own than just a cheap imitation of the original.

Taylor - "In the Ghetto" Jennifer, I could copy and paste your comments here. My sentiments exactly. I absolutely love this song, and T-Man didn't disappoint. They really should give these kids more time with the songs!!!

Elliot - "If I Can Dream" I don't know that I've ever heard Elvis sing this song before. I don't know that I care! E was perfection on this song. I loved every note. I'm quickly becoming a Yaminian.

Elliot - "Trouble" Unbelievable! He not only deserves to move on to the next round, he deserves to be in the finals after what he's been pulling off the past couple weeks! He's grown more than any of the others, and he's technically the best vocalist of the bunch. A natural, compared to Katherine's closely coached and honed skills. Even if I don't buy for one second that he's "evil," the way he performed this song got me all excited. I'm definitely a fan!

Who I want: Katherine, Katherine
Who will: Katherine, Chris
Going home: It better be Kat!

P.S. Did you see the Chris ROCKS sign in the audience??? :D

Well, we now know what kind of underwear two of them wear -- that really nice.

About the screaming at the end of the rocker's second number -- I wouldn't have been more disgusted if he had hurled on stage. Go home, please.

Katherine was treated a bit unfairly by the judges (to make tonight's show more interesting?), though I somewhat agree with what they said. Also, once again, she over-sang (on "Hound Dog" at least).

Taylor, really nice "In the Ghetto", and what I expected in "Jailhouse Rock". He tends to be a consistent performer and is safe for now.

Simon was right about Elliott, he came out fighting. Really nice job on both songs. Though it would be great if he stayed, Yaminians / Yaminions ought to be prepared for his elimination tonight. And if he sings "If I Can Dream", there won't be a dry eye in the house.

Actually, Anonymous, I've been an Elliott fan from the beginning, before anyone really knew much about his backstory. But you have your opinion, and I respect that. That's what is so great about this site; we can all express our opinions and "fan-dom" (for lack of a better word).

So, with that said...For the most part, Elvis Night wasn't so bad. There were definitely a few clinkers (yes, I'm talking to you, Kat), but overall, not the travesty a lot of people may have expected. Like Jennifer said, NOBODY sings like Elvis, and nobody will ever come close. Elvis was unique.

I agree with Jennifer's comments 100%. I like Kat, but she was definitely not at her best last night. A few clinkers here and there, and forgotten lyrics??? That surprises me. And I could tell she was a little breathless at some points during the medley. But maybe it was just me.

I DID enjoy Taylor's "Jailhouse Rock." It was done in true Taylor fashion, dancing and all. It was a fun performance, probably not a rendition I'd buy on CD, but I still enjoyed it.

Of Chris' two songs, I liked "Suspicious Minds" the best. I loved that song to begin with, and I was grateful that at least he didn't mangle it. And what was with the red glasses?

And Elliott...well, I've already professed my "fan-dom" (see, there's that word again) many times. Last night, like Simon said, he "came out fighting", and I do believe he met the challenge. If the clogged phone lines were any indicator, a lot of fans apparently felt the same way.

I don't even want to try to predict who's going home tonight. I do believe Kat may be in a little danger, unless her fanbase kicked into high gear last night and smoked the telephone lines.

Only 11-and-a-half more hours until Idol....

Thank you! :o)

I [heart]ed the WOO at the end of Elliott's performance. He was so filled with joy over a great job. I swear I don't know who was having more fun: Elliott or the band who did great and got major airtime.

Lots of arguing today about whether that was really his "best" performance. I think his best vocal, for me, was A Song for You, closely followed by Moody's Mood, the night I fell in total like with him. But I think Trouble was really his best overall performance, so relaxed and so animated. Well, animated in an Elliott sort of way.

I don't doubt that he picked up a lot of fans after [finally] hearing his backstory, but no more or less than Pickler did for hers. They just learned what we've known all along. Plus a lot of people liked him, but also liked somebody else and possibly never thought Elliott had a chance because, well, sometimes this show can be far too superficial.

QUESTION re: KAT

But first - I like her. I really do. Or maybe it's just that I'm a 35 year old woman who wants to be her. But anyway, I think she's really talented and I like her softer side. She tends to oversing. But I like her, I really do.

Why do you think most of the music industry folks working with them rave about how wonderful she is and even sing operatic duets w/ her, but then she comes out not so shining? I feel like she is more of a piano and voice kind of gal and that belting/big stage is too much.

That's my opinion. What is yours?

Listening to the songs again on your blog and have to admit that without the visual of seeing Chris and drooling the entire time over him, he sounds INCREDIBLE, much better than I gave him credit for in my blog. Especially Suspicious Minds. WOW!! And, that bands kicked some BUTT last night!!! They were AWESOME!
Hugs,
Lisa who will shut up now :)

Cathy...I agree with you on Kat. I think she has a beautiful voice...but American Idol? I can't imagine her as a Pop or Rock star...a beautiful career on Broadway/Opera is her calling. -Jenna

I can definitely see Kat on Broadway. She'd be amazing.

Only Kelly Clarkson has fulfilled the original intent of American Idol...become a pop diva!!! Ruben wandered off into R&B and now gospel. Fantasia is also in R&B and while she has 4 Grammy nominations to her credit, she's not an American Idol. Carrie is probably going to be a country superstar but never a pop diva. Which of these four fit the image...None of Them!!!
As Rod Stewart said, Kat was born to sing the classics. Others on this site are right in saying that Kat could head to Broadway and be huge.
Elliot will never be a pop star. Again he is a great vocalist, but not a pop star.
Chris is a rocker...deal with it! You would never find him fronting a boy-band and being a pop idol.
Taylor is headed to the country-blues charts, not the pop charts.
So enjoy the next few weeks and look for your favorite in a record store near you...but don't look under pop music to find any of them.
Actually Ace had pop idol written all over him, but he lacked the talent to make it happen.
Later all!!!

Elliott could be very, very successful in the Michael Buble set - scratch that. He WILL be very, very succesful - no matter what happens on American Idol.
