it's over: a simulblog...

Well, it's over for one of them and three of them will give group hugs, shed a tear and then pack their bags to head home for parades, high school bands, Wal-Mart visits and just general hometown cheeriness, because that's what the top three do before being handed a song title from one of the judges and another one from Clive Davis.

Because THIS is American Idol.

And THIS is a simulblog, live blogging as they call it, writing as the action unfolds with publishing at every important break, so for those of you in the West who don't want to be spoiled, you might want to check out the
voting odds for tonight where, for the first time evah, Elliott is favored over Chris, and Kat has gone from second fave, behind Taylor to, well, goose poopy.

But come back later, please.

Now we wait for the beginning of the show...

Ryan reminds us that the finale is just two weeks away. Oh go ahead Ryan, make me sad. We get reminded of the events of the previous evening, just in case we've forgotten that Elliott was the bomb, Taylor was great, Chris was good and Katharine sang too.

Then, of course, we're reminded that this show is not about those kids on the couch, but about the judges and their antics. The camera pans to the couch. Polite laughter as the main stars make nonsense. Except from Katharine, who looks about to throw up.

And luckily we're spared by a commercial break...

YAY!! Kermit the Frog is in the crappy Ford commercial. Now that was a good one!

More Graceland footage as we get a mini-house tour. And then it's the medley.

YAY!! Medley is absolutely FAB. I love this group. They have proven they know how to work together to make good music rather than competing with each other only to butcher the work.

I love these kids.

But I hate commercials.

Seems Jerry O'Connell's fiancee wants to hear Taylor reprise Jailhouse Rock. And because we always like to push the execution to the very end so the ousted kid gets cut off after five syllables of the final song, we make time. Not that I mind hearing Taylor again.

Ryan puts Taylor to his right. And after calling the others over, puts Elliott with Taylor and sticks Chris with a horribly pissed Katharine on the other side.

One is the top two, the other, well...

Elliott's ecstatic to be hugging Taylor. Oh hell, I would be ecstatic hugging Taylor too.

Ryan plays around, getting Kat more and more pissed (this could be fun) before sending Elliott and Taylor back to safety.

Simon says Kat should leave. Oooo. Thar she blows.

OMG. Chris gets the boot. Now that was a good fourth place shock.

Katharine is no longer pissed. But Chris gets the special Bad Day arrangement that I don't like. Now he's pissed.

We could be in for a rumble.

Somehow I have a feeling that there are a lot of pissed people.

So long Chris. And good luck. Your opportunities now are not limited by constraints.

Wow, I had a feeling. Thanks for posting and being 3 hours early! I'm going out to dinner and did not want to find out so late who got the boot. Kat has a lot of fans out there.

Chris's problem is that he didn't play the game.

He has one act (tilt his head back, glare at the camera and sing/scream). He refused to play the game, even though he could have. And ultimately, it cost him.

At this point in the season, the object isn't collecting fans. Each of the remaining finalists already has a rabid, power-voting fanbase.

What each remaining finalist needs to do now is absorb the rabid, power-voting fanbase of the eliminated constestants.

Chris didn't do that.

Seriously, do you think Paris or Kellie's fans are voting for Chris? No, they're voting for Katharine (girl power!).

Are Bucky's "underdog" voters burning up the lines for Chris? No; they're voting for the new underdog, Elliott (who, unlike Ace, can actually sing).

The only people I think may have gravitated to Chris are some of Ace's tween girl-fans who were voting for the resident hottie, but I think even some of them went to Katharine, who is young and pretty.

Chris fans, take solace in the fact that he will probably be the most commercially successful of the final four from this year. What he does, he does really well. Unfortunately, he didn't play the game well enough to win.

Dont worry - Chris has a great career ahead of him. He's more talented than most of the nationally known recording artists playing on your radio today.

I'm really sad for him, but I would be sad for ANY of the top four going tonight. They're all GREAT. I'm an Elliott fan, but I'm not stupid - I can see the talent all of them possess, and I really believe they'll all have success regardless of the outcome of American Idol.

I thought Katharine seemed out of breath during her first song and trying too hard on the second last night.
I really thought she was the one that was going to be packing her bags and from the look on her face up until Ryan dropped the bomb, I think she thought so too.

You could tell Chris was completely blindsided, but I have to agree with Dave's comment earlier, he just didn't play the game right. No worries for Chris though, he could front any band that is on the radio right now. I am certain this is not the last we will hear from him.
He ought to go over to RockStar and head up Tommy Lee's new band Super Nova!

Observations:

1. Priscilla Presley really has that Lily Munster thing going for her.

2. It's not too early to predict where Chris' votes will go: to no one in particular, Chris' voters are too pissed to vote next week.

3. Compared to the first four seasons, is this not one of the best final four groups?

4. Can't wait for Jennifer to link the Elvis Medley. I was thoroughly entertained by that group performance.

5. Don't underestimate Taylor's fan base. They represent the 30 - 50 demographic and vote with all their might, evidenced by the fact that he has not been in the bottom group yet.

6. Instead of a wish list of next weeks songs, I would like to predict which judge the final three will draw: Elliott==>Randy; Taylor==>Paula; Katherine==>Simon

I am sooooooooo upset!!!!! Kat was by far the weakest singer this week. Elvis rolled over in his grave at her performance of his songs, why is she still there? You can count me as a Chris fan from day one and yes I voted for him 100 times last night alone, guess I should have dialed faster. I am sure Chris will have a wonderful career ahead of him, and I also have no doubt that in three years when Kats name is mentioned everyone will say....who??? You don't have to be the winner of Idol to be the star of the season, and Chris is shinning.

10:43 PM, May 10, 2006
Blogger Sunshine said...

Wow! That totally blew my mind...but to me, in a good way. I also thought it was Kat's last straw, BUT I'm a sucker for dialidol and just kept my fingers crossed that it was right this week.

I did like Chris at the very beginning, but he started to bore me as the weeks went by. I do agree completely with the High Lord, and felt it was his time to go.

Kat had an off week (just like everyone does), and she shouldn't be punished for it. To all the Chris fans out there, don't put down the other person who was outvoted by him, she is still a great singer overall! And Chris was great too, they ALL are, its just that someone had to go this week and it was him.

Also, I know you Chris fans are really pissed that he got the boot, but don't stop watching the show because of that! You guys are fans of American Idol and you'll be sure that he will have a great cd out come fall or next spring! This just makes me remember seeing Fantasia win season 3! I screamed and hollered and ranted that I would never watch the show again cos some idiot beat out Diana DeGarmo, the cute little girl who proved herself to be the best 16 year old out there! But here I am, still watching and obsessing like never before!

p.s. Birm- those are great predictions for judge choices. Can't wait and Kat McPhee better bring it!!!!

gotta say I'm felling sad, but honestly, I have liked all four of these kids since the start, so I've been prepared for weeks that this would be the hardest cut to 2 ever. I didn't really watch season 1, but have the rest, and I've never liked more than 2 people. I think Kat would be running away with the contest if she stopped singing opera. she needs to understand she's amped, and the audience doesn't need you to do all the work for them to hear you. Her solo in the medley was great, it had the correct volume for once.

Chris could easily have been the winner too, had he learned to leave the screaming out of songs that aren't suppose to be screamed. The end of less conversation was terrible, only because he had to throw in a scream. I had been thinking up to that point, he's actually singing for once, then he had to "trademark" it, and got himself the boot finally.

Taylor learned weeks ago to not "trademark" every song with his odd dancing and spasms, and the 'yell'. I love when he does it, because it's not all the time. he tries to be a balladier from time to time. I don't think Taylor has the best vocals, but he's ok with the slow stuff, isn't grating on the ears, and when he does up tempo, you have to smile and laugh :)

Elliot is still an oddity. He sings well, though I don't usually understand what the judges are hearing when they say how great he did something. I'm not a singer, I can't hit a note, so I don't understand the technical side of singing. I just know what I like. And he's usually ok to listen to. just not as memorable as Chris and Taylor, though he does seem to be technically better for what I can grasp.

I think Kat was in shock she didn't get the boot, but as one of the ladies mentioned elsewhere, the chances of the sole lady getting the boot tonight were just too distant. Certain people only like, or greatly prefer female voices, and hence always think a girl is best. She had a really bad week, but those who like each of these kids are voting based on the season, not last night.

I think it's the fans of the outcasts who are really swaying things. Fans of girls are helping kat, anti-rock fans are hurting Chris. It doesn't matter how well Chris does, if he makes it "modern" rock-esque, those who like country aren't going to vote for him, they'll go for Taylor or Elliot, etc. This is where Bo lost out last year, and Chris didn't take the steps to "play the game" as mentioned above. Rock, especially screaming rock, is NOT the predominant music style in America. It's a small portion. And rockers have to learn, if you want to "win", you can't be a rocker 100% of the time. You need to be a 'singer' at least 50% of the time so you have a chance to win over those who are anti scream :)

so I feel bad for Chris, the way Ryan set him up, you could see it coming, and after the 'people having been picking Chris to win this year' and putting a big grin on his face, that was a hard and fast slap down of a delivery of the bad news. If I had a rock band in need of a front man, I'd be calling Chris. He's got a great rock radio and concert voice.

My upcoming expectation: Kat go the shock of her life tonight. Either she gets in the dumps and down on herself thinking she doesn't deserve to still be here, or she sees the opportunity she's been gifted, and she works twice as hard as any other time, and comes out on fire, much like Elliot the past couple of weeks after being scared by the eye. I still think Taylor is the likely winner, but with so many pushing to save Elliot, and if Kat hits 3 out of the park next week, I won't be 'shocked', just saddened, if Taylor were dropped due to apathy and laziness by the voters. Gonna be a wild last 2 shows!!

oh man, when season 3 started the 12, my fav was Amy Adams. she had a bad early week and was gone, and I was shocked. people needed to not be put off by colorful hair and personality :)

but i'm with Sunny. I was shocked when Diana made it to top 4 status, but at that point, she was definitely my fav. I'm not ashamed to say I'm not worried about voting for the best singer, if the other singer is the person who grew the most in the show. If someone with the total package (say Bo) is competing against someone off the farm (say, oh, Carrie), I'll take the more natural one who hasn't had the benefit of years of road shows and has all the stage presence already. Without Idol, Carrie never makes it into the music biz. She was too farmgirlish. And she still has no stage presence. hopefully that changes in a couple years :) Bo was always a shoe-in to be a success, as Chris is, put with the right vehicle. Elliot feels like the one in "need" of AI to me this year. Even Kat likely has more overall prospects without being on AI. Without AI, would anyone have given Elliot a look with his bad hair and well, odd face? (anyone else hate the mouth closeups which force us to stare into his fishlipped mouth at teeth in serious need of braces? when he does those power notes and puckers up, why does the director constantly tell the camera to stare into his throat!! ugh!! haha

hey, while we're talking about Amy and other oldies, are there any rules that prevent cut contestants from trying out the next year? I mean, it seems odd to me we haven't seen say, the 11/12 person from any season the next year, having worked and improved, or people from hollywood week that maybe made the top 24. I keep wondering if there are rules or the auditioners outright reject those people for having failed their one try.

11:26 PM, May 10, 2006

yes! the top 24 (or 32 from other seasons) are not allowed back in for the running. Anyone before that can tryout again. Matthew Metzger tried out both seasons 2 and 3 and made the top 32 the second time around. He didnt make the top 12 however and wasn't able to try again. But that's ok, cos now hes on One Life to Life and he's beautiful!

I hate to remind you all, but yesterday I went out on a limb and predicted the male appendage with ears would be going home tonight.

It feels GOOD to be right!

Katherine's T & A factor are keeping her in the game. No one alive can think she sang well, but never underestimate the power of hormonally charged males.

Elliot has the pity vote, because he's so damned homely looking (remember iggy dolls?) that you just gotta love him. And he does have a good voice.

Chris can go back to screaming in the shower and doing the beady-eyed dumb stare. Im sure there is a rocker band who would love having him front for them. He could get lost among the other rockers who have the same lack of personality this one trick pony displayed.

Did I mention I predicted he would go home tonight???

The REAL idol folks, is Taylor. He can sing, entertain, and is the breath of fresh air Idol needs.

Was it my imagination, or did Simon have tears in his eyes, now that his cash cow was BOOTED OFF.

As much as Simon is right most of the time, his attitude drives me nuts. He's still my favorite judge though.

I could say a million things about Randy, but I won't because they are way too mean. I just never listen to what he says and whoever he gets for choice of song next week, watch out, because its going to be a bad one. (i.e. picking Shania Twain for Carrie just because she is country, C'MON! Everyone knows that Shania was only country for her first album then she used her looks to get her everywhere else) I'll be surprised if he makes a decent selection.

Elliemae, You said, "PEOPLE JUST VOTE FOR HIM BECAUSE THEY FEEL SORRY FOR HIM!!!! " Or maybe, perhaps elliemae, some people have what is called depth of personality and want more out of their American Idol than what we already hear on the radio every 5 seconds of the day.

Elliott has a different non POP sound and yes, he is not as HOT as Chris, but don't be so shallow. Remember Kelly Clarkson? To date, she is the best American Idol and in the looks department, she is no Katharine McPhee, but she is a better singer and performer than Katharine any day.

It's not about looks!!! It's about quality of the voice and the way they present their voice.

Elliott obviously did it better than Chris.

I don't mean to be cruel, but all the complaining about Chris getting the axe is making me happy he's gone. Ever since the top 6, I've figured these 4 would make it to this point, and it would be upsetting to loose any of them. They are simply the best top 4. I'm going to hate it next week too, because the person getting cut is probably good enough to have made the finals in other years. I don't blame people for voting for Kat, considering she was asked to do something that was very hard for her compared to the guys, and that's to sing Elvis. Imagine they had 3 girls and one guy, and did a Madonna night. Would you really expect the guy to out do the girls? You'd expect it to go poorly, most likely. At least I wouldn't have high expectations :)

If Kat had done "Are You Lonesome Tonight" as her Tuesday performance, it might have gone better for her. Those who have noted that three guys vs. one girl singing Elvis puts her at a disadvantage have a valid point. This week the disappointed Chris fanatics are probably too mad to vote for anyone, but when they get back in the game for the finale the underdog may benefit from their vote. That could put Taylor at risk in the finale. He has been in the driver's seat all season and America loves an underdog which will benefit whoever he faces in the finale. But, as long as Simon keeps vilifying Taylor's antics, America will continue to vilify Simon by voting for the Grey Fox.

On another note, just remember this...
Only Kelly Clarkson has fulfilled the original intent of American Idol...become a pop diva!!! Ruben wandered off into R&B and now gospel. Fantasia is also in R&B and while she has 4 Grammy nominations to her credit, she's not an American Idol. Carrie is probably going to be a country superstar but never a pop diva. Which of this year's final four fit the image...None of Them!!!
As either Barry Manilow or Rod Stewart said, Kat was born to sing the classics. Others on this site are right in saying that Kat could head to Broadway and be huge.
Elliot will never be a pop star. Again he is a great vocalist, but not a pop star.
Chris is a rocker...deal with it! You would never find him fronting a boy-band and being a pop idol.
Taylor is headed to the country-blues charts, not the pop charts.
So enjoy the next few weeks and look for your favorite in a record store near you...but don't look under pop music to find any of them.
Actually Ace had pop idol written all over him, but he lacked the talent to make it happen.
Later all!!!

There actually is NOTHING wrong with how Fantasia and Rueben ended up! They went much further than they possibly could have without Idol!

I am tired of the former Idol winners being bashed. It is a career booster, no matter what the genre is. Pop, Rock, Gospel...etc. You don't have to be a chart topper constantly to have benefits from winning!

I'm still in shock over last night's results show. I had figured Chris would end up in the bottom 2, but Kat would be the one to leave. Boy, did I call that one wrong...I think even Kat was thinking, "Huh? Did I hear that one right?"

Mom wondered the same thing. She asked me, "Is it possible that Ryan could have read it wrong, or they gave him the wrong one?" (As you can tell, she's an Idol fan AND a Chris fan.)

Chris' departure has stunned me more than any this season. I like all of the top 4, but Chris had, at one time, seemed to be a lock for the finale. And now...whew. Shocker. But Jennifer pointed out recently that we tend to have shocking 4th place finishes every other year, and this year we were due one. And boy did we get it.

I still think Chris will do well, regardless of his finish on Idol. Remember when he sang "Hemorrhage" in the semifinals and Fuel expressed their admiration? Something tells me Chris will be getting many phone calls in the next few days.

#1 Amy Adams was one of my favorites too.
#2 It's a signing competition. Chris either by stupid voters or conspiracy is no longer singing in the competition; he's not dead nor is he being banned from singing. He's on the CD and in the concert. I think his career will be fine w/out the title "American Idol"
Sometimes reactions are a little extreme. Believe me I thought he should have been one of the final two..but oh well. I can get the CD
J: You mentioned in your live blog that there will be a lot of pissed off Chris fans. Most people I know are Chris fans and I'm surprised that there aren't really truley "pissed people". Most w/ my attitude...damn the luck..he'll do well...not fair. I think the media talk show circut will blow this WAY out of proportion. Our town was first on the list of Fox channels, after 2 hours of sleep Chris said that he can't talk about it but something big is in the works.
I'm rooting for Kat and Taylor in the final #2.
And finally, loved Kermit and really loved the group sing.

And I DO have to say that if Kat doesn't change her 'out-of-tune' really quick-like, I may have to change loyalty camps and support the only one who's shown he can live up to that 'raised bar'- Elliot. And to those of you put off by his looks, I ask, "When has this competition been about how a contestant LOOKS as opposed to HOW they SING??"! He's shown himself to be absolutely PHENOMENAL in the past 2 weeks. It's getting very interesting...

I do believe all of the final 4 contestants will do well after the show is over and the summer tour ends.... Actually, final 5. I read somewhere that Paris is going to be working with Beyonce on an album (could be a falsehood). If so, she's going to do great too!

I am still hoping for a Kat/Elliott finale, but anyway it goes is fine with me. They ALL deserve it! Next week is going to be fun as well. Three songs each, they should make it a 2-hour show, so the kids have more singing time. But the House season finale has precedence.

...til next week!

It doesn't take a "stupid voter" to know that Chris has no personality, has the dead cold stare of JAWS, and is a one trick pony. He shows all the versatility of Jessica Simpson, and the blandness of Marge Simpson. Unless you're tone deaf and actually like to hear a song screamed.

I am so glad he's gone, so all you Chris fans can go cry in your inexpensive beers.....oh and did I tell you I PREDICTED HE'D GET DAS BOOT??????

BWAHAHAHAHAHAHHA

One more thing...
Mia-I agree with you about Elliott's looks. I personally think he's adorable, but others who don't shouldn't not like him. He has the BEST vocals this season...the BEST! I liked Scott Savol's voice (please don't shoot me here!) but he definitely didn't have the look. I even enjoyed Ruben (only until AI) and he was far from looking the part. Everybody is unique and different and like many have previously said, this is a SINGING competition, not a beauty contest.

Actually I would have said the pissed off people thing regardless of who went, cause Katharine had a look that would kill. So she started it. :D

And, at the risk of ticking people off, I said to a friend before the show that a Chris shocker would be the best thing for him. Yes, the media will blow it totally out of proportion, like they always do, so he will get tons of attention, which will only benefit him. And, unlike Bo, he will be under only about a contract restriction until roughly early next year, he will not be forced to record the drivel 19E always makes them record, he can front a band and make his own choices.

But I know it's hard to see it that way when people are still stung by the disappointment of not seeing him in the top three show. I totally understand that.

Thanks, SUnny- it's nice to know others have made a similar observations about the looks vs talent thing. I think Elliot can really truly pull this off if he continues to make the strides he has in the past few weeks.. And regardless of WHAT genre he falls into, if he wins this, I know I'll back that boy and buy whatever he releases because his voice is smooth and sends shivers down my spine (that's the criteria I use to decide who's the best!).. To those of you who have a hard time listening to Elliot, try this: close your eyes and HEAR the man!
And, as I said a mere 5 hours ago, Chris is ALREADY moving on and I for one, know exactly where I'LL be at 7PM Eastern Time tonight...
Anyone have any ideas about who this 'mystery band' might be???

Well, I'll put my 2 cents in.

I was sad to see Chris booted, even though I thought he was way too cocky and a poseur. I'm surprised he didn't play up the Daddy angle more, having his wife and stepkid in the audience crying tears of joy when he sang. That would have gotten him some Elliott votes, I'll bet. I thought he was hot, and the voice is great-- but just kind of a boring person.

Katharine is... a nightmare to listen to. The girl has NEVER been able to hold a note. She is only still there because she's so pretty. Listen on headphones and don't watch the TV-- it is torture without the visuals!

The only person I can see winning at this point is Taylor, as much as Elliott makes me smile.
