the first three: a SIMULBLOG!...

We're going to watch three people leave happy and nine people leave with their heads in their hands as they examine the chards of their shattered dreams strewn all around their feet which have nowhere to go except to the closest bus station.

God I love execution night.

And I love that they're having it during family hours so that kids can watch the massacre and old people like me can stay up without missing our 9 p.m. bedtimes.

Okay, so that's only gonna last through the semi-finals, but a girl can enjoy little pleasures while they last.

This is a live post, also known around these parts as a SIMULBLOG, when I'm writing as I'm watching with a publish at every important break, so if you are on the west coast and you want to be spoiled, now is the time to exit stage left, because by the end of the post you're gonna know who's staying and who's going home to wait on the wildcard invite.

Ryan tells us that 24 million votes were phoned in last night, before he gives us a refresher on how this new season's semi-finals are gonna work. Yeah we know Ryan. Three stay. Nine don't. This show could last only 14.5 minutes if they would only avoid the judges' self-congratulation and contrived drama. But whatever.

We get a review on how group one got to Hollywood and to the eyeball stage. Then we're treated to a GROUP SING! Thankfully it's just 12 of them, not the whole 36, although that would not have surprised me. God I love cheesy dancing!

THIS is American Idol!

_____

Oh good. We get reminded of the trainwreck that was the night before. I choose not to watch.

The kids get asked for their own reviews of their own performances. They hem. They haw. Some of them obviously didn't watch the show.

Ryan shows us the three good stools which will be filled with three lucky butts.

He brings Casey to the stage, who says she agreed with the judges that she shouldn't have tried to sing Sting. Randy says she needs to go. She does. Bye Casey.

Stephen is next. He kinda sorta agrees that he chose the wrong song. Kara says he needs to go. He does. Bye Stephen.

Alexis is asked to come on down. I like her hat. Paula reminds Alexis that she was marvelous. And she stays and gets to sit on one of the shiny stools. And she gets to sing. Hey! The winners are gonna sing again. Now THAT is a twist.
_____

This show could be about nine minutes long if it weren't for the commercials. Ricky and Jackie are brought center stage. Ricky is sent away. So is Jackie.

Anoop and Michael are asked to join Ryan. They get reminded of last night's reviews. One of them is advancing. And it's Michael. Anoop is sent to await another callback, which I'm sure he'll get.

Michael gets to sing again.

This show would be about three minutes long if it weren't for the encores.
_____

Oh I hope they keep their promise of reducing this season's results show to 30 minutes.

We get to see some highlights of the Disneyworld extravaganza, ending with a snippet of the David Cook/Carrie Underwood duet, all of which can be seen here. It really is good.

Michael Johns and Carly Smithson remind us of what a great season last year was. They team up for The Letter.
_____

Ann Marie is told to stand. She's reminded how much the judges hated her. Brent does the same. So does Stevie. Nothing like a mass killing! Randy says none of them deserves to stay. And, predictably, none of them do. Oh the carnage.

Danny and Tatiana are left. Both are brought center stage. Paula says the last spot should go to Danny. But we have to wait until "after the break."
_____

Both are reminded of the songs they sang. One will get a stool and the other will get a wildcard. Mark my words. Danny makes it through. Tatiana, in Tatiana fashion, has a Tatiana mini-meltdown and is assisted, sorta, off the stage by the other girls who also got the ax. She will return, girls. Trust me.

Danny gets to close the show with his reprise. And we await next week.

Remember, President Obama will be taking the stage next Tuesday, so we'll be on a Wednesday/Thursday schedule. I like President Obama. I think he will advance.

See you then...

Michael gave me a Sundance Head flashback for some reason.
Let's see.....could the last seat possibly be Danny?

I hope so, Alexis, Michael and Danny are the only ones I voted for. And this would be the end of Tatianna.

I kind of hate this new system they have - the one shot at staredom - I like Anoop and Stevie, but they both sucked last night. = ( I hope they both get wildcard.

Not so fast. If psycho crazy girl gets whacked, I'm sure she'll be back for the Wild Card.

I wouldn't hand a wild card to Tatianna quite yet.

The judges really liked Anoop and Tatianna's attitude may turn out to work against her. She is an emotional wreck.

I hope the Braddy guy or Anne Marie will get a wildcard. Please, please, please don't let it be Tatiana!

I hope Ann Marie and Anoop get Wild Card invites. I think Tatiana will get "the call" because the producers love (manufactured) "drama".

Why do you all hate me? I am a great vocalist! You'll see. I'll be back for the Wild Card night. Because I'm Wild.

My love to you all,

Question #1: Do the judges solely decide who the wild card will be or does the voting public have any say.
Question #2: Can the bring back more than one person from a given group, or will they choose one from each of the three groups?
I hope it's the latter part of question 2 because I really think they like Anoop and would bring him back if they could which would be fine with me. Tatiana really was a wreck last night.. I've never seen a contestant take being booted quite so badly before.
It was lovely to see Carly and Michael last night. As Jennifer said.. it reminded me of just how good last years contestants were.
Please, let Dave the High Lord be wrong!!!! I do not want Tatiana back... yes, she can sing but the emotional time bomb would be too stressful to take!!
Great post Jennifer.. I too believe Obama will advance :-) (I think it's time his name stopped showing up as a spelling error)

As I remember, in the two(?) seasons when they had the Wild Cards, they brought back 10 or 12 people to sing. That means three or four people from each "heat" will be asked back, although not all of them will be asked to sing (one year, they told two people to get lost after a week of rehersals).

And I think it's the judges/producers who pick who gets invited back for the Wild Card.

joes place blog says:

From what I understand, the Wildcard show will be held in one hour. The Judges will invite back 6 contestants and they will perform. Of those on the Wildcard show, the JUDGES will pick three to fill the last three spots in the top 12.

I have heard that the FOURTH highest vote getter (Like Anoop was tonight) will be invited back, plus three other chosen strictly by the judges.

Thank you for clearing that up. I'm glad the judges have some input tho I fear they'll put through some "controversial" types just to keep the show "interesting"!!!

And they have been known to bring back people who got cut in Hollywood. (Carmen anyone?) My understanding is that the producers will choose who is invited and the judges will choose the three remaining finalists. The voters will not have a say, kinda like Season one. (But in season one there was only one wildcard selection.) In the other two seasons with wildcard episodes, the public voted for one and each of the judges selected one, because there were four wildcard slots.

I don't seem to mind when the new president interrupts my shows, but I did mind when the old one did. LOL! I was hoping that Tatiana would be the one to go and I was very happy when she did. Did you notice the fake tears? How many times did the camera go to her in hopes of seeing her break down? Who cares is what I say!!!!! Go Danny! :)

I don't think they cut to her to show her crying; I think they cut to her hoping she'd go postal and beat the crap out of Seacrest or Simon.

LOL at Dave's comment. I think they were hoping for some added drama with her, too. There's always the wildcard show. :)

If this is the case, maybe they'll bring back Jamar (sp?). I liked him way better than his friend Danny anyway. Don't get me wrong, I think Danny is good, but I think they're making a bigger deal out of him than is necessary or warranted. To me he actually sounds like Michael Bolton, and I don't mean that in a good way.

It doesn't make sense that the judges would bring back someone from Hollywood. They already cut those people once.

I thought the fourth highest vote getter from each group would be invited back for the wildcard and the judges would get to invite 3 more. I do like that they brought back the wild card, but I'm not sure about them only picking three each week.

At this point in the show I'm just glad Idol is back!

I really like Danny. I can't say lurve cause I am in a committed relationship lol.....did they ever say what happened to Danny's wife she must have been so young, how tragic and I swear Danny has new glasses on each time I see him which brings to mind Elton John. I like the three who stayed but I really liked the Braddy version of the Leon Russell song and it made me feel nastalgic.

Is it just me, or is it PAINFULLY obvious that the judges actually know who is getting the axe? I've watched Idol for years, and they at least tried to act like they were surprised when someone got kicked off. This time with the judges being asked who should go...it's a given who is going. Why in hell ask them?
I thought it was Ryans job to give they news...
Ugh! I'm not sure I'm going to like these "new" changes in the show.

Randy has been the worst at this over the past two years.

Last year, he was so far up Archuleta's rear end, he couldn't even bring himself to say nice things about any of the other singers. This year, he's chosen non-stop pimpage for Danny Gokey and it's starting to wear very thin.

I'd like to vote him off.

I agree with Connie and Dave you do get the impression the judges have picked their Idol already, and it does look like Danny Gokey's the flavor of the month right now. I like the guy and think it must have been horrible to lose his wife, but I don't think he's the best singer.

I pray they don't bring Tatiana back as a wild card!!! BUT I have a bad feeling they will. YUCK

I don't think it's any secret (because they haven't bothered to try) that Danny Gokey is TCO. However, the dead wife, as tragic as it is, is growing very very thin. The picture on performance night was a bit over the top, and very well may backfire on them. And him. I always applauded David Cook for keeping his family issues to himself, despite the show's best efforts to milk it for backstory.

Tatiana, I think, will be back. This season is stacking up to be as boring as Season 6. They need someone to shake it up. Even Nigel admitted that Sanjaya carried the show for the first half of the sixth season. People tuned in to see what he would do next. People will do the same for Tatiana.

I don't believe it is Danny's fault that Idol has taken his tragic story and used it as a storyline - The boy can sing better than alot of the others - and even he is a bit embarrassed by this.
I feel bad for him that they Believe this will sway votes for him - when he truly can stand on his own.

I would agree with the last comment, except that Michael Slezak on ew.com made a good point on this subject.

Remember David Cook was going through the whole thing with his brother's health during the last season and would NOT exploit it on AI, even when Ryan Seacrest asked him about it on stage. If Cook could keep his personal business from being paraded in front of the audience, then Gokey could, too. At best, Gokey has just allowed it to happen. But considering he provided video and pictures and gives speeches about it on the show, I think he's more complicit than that.

S--- Its Tuesday night almost 8:00 and Idol won't be on. There's only 3 shows I watch a week, Idol being one of them, so I'm not too thrilled.

As far as politics go I've had my fill of all that crap! Not an honest one in the bunch!
