monday bits & pieces...

While I still try to finish my prediction entry while tracking down any hint of song selections, and catching up on what rumored song choices are now being retracted (as they always are), I thought I'd pass on a little news that I'm still working on verifying and throw out a completely non-scientific straw poll-type of question, just so we can take just a bit of the pulse around here.

The finale is coming up, of course, next Wednesday. It will be tough to top last year's finale extravaganza, but it seems the show recognized what a brilliant move it was last year to pair the top 12 with their idols in the biggest, bestest medley EVER. Looks like they're planning the same sort of event again.

If you remember last season, or if you're new this season, the finale is where all of the finalists are reunited, do assorted Brady Bunch-type numbers, the top two sing separately, sing together and we all await the naming of the American Idol. Last year, in a stroke of genius, the kids were paired with their idols, presenting us a medley featuring George Benson, Billy Preston, Rascal Flatts and Lynyrd Skynryd, among others. Each of the top three was given a solo performance with theirs, and the other kids were grouped together.

Apparently
Meat Loaf announced this weekend in his forum that he will be among the musical guests, performing with Katharine McPhee. Sounds like fun! I'll stay on top of that. [Please, let Kanye West show up to rap with Kevin. Pleeeeeze!]

Now for the totally non-scientific straw poll-ish type question for everyone reading this right now. (Remember, you don't have to register with Blogger to leave comments here!) So lurkers, it's time to speak up, please. You don't even have to identify yourself.

Who are you rooting for? I'd like to get an idea how representative the kids are supported around here.

I'll start [like anybody has to guess]. Go ELLIOTT!

Your turn.

Oh...and thanks.

Jennifer, I've enjoyed your blog this season (the stats and trends especially have been great).

I've been a Taylor fan since his audition. I was hooked by the harmonica and then by his performance of Levon, way back when.

I do hope that Elliott makes it through this week, though, as I enjoy him more each week.

But my final vote will go to Taylor. Soul Patrol!!!

Jennifer, I've enjoyed your blog daily throughout this whole shindig!!! I have a link to it on my homepage...

Katharine is too conceited for this competition...There's a difference in being humble-and then there's Katharine...I am not a fan of hers, don't get me wrong, she's very talented, but I don't see her as our next AI...

I am torn between Taylor an Elliot...Taylor has been great from the get-go, and Elliot has come so far, that reallly-deservingly he should be our next "American Idol"...

Thanks again Jennifer for a wonderful site!!!

Elliot is my pick.

Elliot has been consistent every single week. He has ALWAYS had a good song choice. Even with his worst performances, they weren't very bad. He seems like a genuine person, but he's UNIQUE. Are you ready? He'd be DIFFERENT. He's not like any other contestants we've had, or so I think. Especially when it comes down to finalists.

Okay, I adore Katharine. Why am I not picking her then? Because we already have a Kelly and Carrie. Now, neither three of them are anything alike, except they share some simliarties in age, hair, (except Carrie is blonde and Kelly changes hair color), ethnicity, and of course gender. Of course no other contesant will EVER be better than Kelly.

BTW, I don't think Kat's conceited at all. If she were conceited, she wouldn't have looked so scared Wednesday before the results were in. You could tell she felt she was getting voted off the show.

I still feel like Katharine is going to WOW us, perhaps that will be tomorrow night?

FINALS: I'd like to see Elliott & Kat and I'd be happy with either one winning and I'd have a hard time deciding who to vote for.

PS - America, I've been thoroughly pleased with your voting (except Bucky should have left sooner). I still argue that they need to hire personal song pickers for the contestants.

I think Katharine is the most marketable of the remaining three finalists. She's easily the best looking and has a pretty good voice (when she's not over-singing).

Taylor and Elliott both have image problems and that makes Fox/19TV squeemish about them winning. If VCM is in the Pimp Spot tomorrow night, we'll know that TPTB really want her to win.

Elliott has come on strong lately and Taylor has been the top vote-getter all season (at least according to DialIdol.

However, I'm not sure whether either of the two remaining guys are really marketable over the long haul. Remember, that only 1 of the American Idols has had any sort of prolonged success (Kelly); Rueben and Fantasia have basically fallen off the face of the earth into nichemarketland and Carrie hasn't been around long enough to pass judgment on (of course, it can be argued that she is a pop failure since she hopped over to CMT so quickly).

This was the strongest Top 4 ever on Idol. They are all good but as far as marketability goes - sadly, that left with Chris. I think Taylor, Elliott & Katherine are all extreemly talented.

Katherine is by far the best "singer" in the bunch but she just hasn't found her niche. She's an amazing singer but I'm not sure she's the "idol".

Taylor is very entertaining and as a fellow musician, I would love to sit out on the porch and jam with him - too much fun. Just not sure what they'll do with him.

Elliott - amazing since he has the hearing loss. I'm just not sure what they can do with him either.

So...at this point I'm ok with any of them winning. It's going to be interesting to watch it all go down.

BTW & for whatever this is worth - most of the folks on here don't seem to be country fans but Carrie Underwood will be a superstar in the country world if she continues to gets good songs. She's the caliber of Martina McBride and is nominated for several awards at next weeks ACM awards and I expect to see her nominated for the CMA's in the fall as well. She's awesome, she's just not a pop princess. I expect to see her getting a Grammy at some point. For the record - I LOVED Bo also. Both of them are incredibly talented!

OK...that's all I've got!

I've like Taylor wince day one. Any guy stuck with Gray hair that young gets my sympathy vote right off. Combine that with his distinctive voice, his fun personality, and his overall enjoyment of this process, he's the guy I have been behind the whole season.

Kat is ok, and "IF" she shows up tomorrow and sings properly, I have no problem with her in the finals and winning, "IF" she also sings correctly during the finals. Same with Elliot. I like all 3of these kids. (well, not sure Taylor qualifies as a kid anymore haha)

I would hope more of us would be happy with this final 3, and rather than deciding who we are going to vote for now, we would wait until the performances are over, and pick the best of the night. I'm all for voting for favorities up to this point. At this point, you simply should have to bring it all 3 songs or not go on. This is when you show if you have the chops for touring and being able to perform on demand, when you aren't at your best (I'm assuming they are getting worn out from the unusual pressure they are under and all the travel, excitment, expectations, practice, etc). Being able to put all the distractions behind you and perform on stage should be 'the' deciding factor from now on.

So, assuming all 3 knock all their songs out well, I'm expecting a Taylor/Elliot finals with a Taylor win. He's had the most consistant base, and if he brings out the harmonica for one song, plus throws in his funky white boy moves, I think he takes the prize since Elliot is less 'entertainer' than Taylor is. And I would think vocally they appeal to the same crowd, as evidenced by the number of people who've said they like both of um and don't really care which of those two win :)

But if T or E bombs, and Kat goes pure, I can accept her in the finals. I know she has the ability, just not sure her Mom hasn't been a factor in her troubles that last couple weeks. And someone please tell her NOT TO SMILE every time she looks at the camera. If it's a sad song, CRY damn it, don't SMILE so damn much! :)

I like all three but Elliott is my favorite. He's worked so hard and has come a long way. Considering how much more experience Taylor and Kat have both had, they should be out performing him and they're not.
I like Taylor a lot and he was my favorite but, he's pretty much the same now as he was at the start of the show. He has a lot of personality but his voice is not as good as Kat's or Elliott's.

Kat is so beautiful and she has a great voice. I'm surprised that with all her professional training she still "over-sings" so often and she frequently seems out of touch emotionally with the sentiment of the song she is singing. I do believe that she is very marketable and will have a great career. I hope she does.

I love Elliott. He has come from nowhere and has worked so hard that I have to wonder what he'd be like if he had all the training and experience that others have had. He will be getting my vote.

I'm not at all 'sure' who's going to pull it off, but I'd really LIKE it to be Elliot. I love Kat, but she won't really NEED to win to be able to propel herself where she wants to go- and she doesn't seem to pick popular or likeable enough songs to be able to hold that title anyway.
But, Elliot... he deserves this- he's taken a lot of critism from the judges (and has taken it in stride!), and he's taken even MORE from the general public- ON THE BASIS OF LOOKS ONLY- and it's done nothing but make him better.
He's got soul, range, variety and smooth all going for him... I wish him well!

it seems a few greedy people have used up all the capital letters... oh, well. i take a small amount of comfort in not reading their posts.

i (still) think it will be katharine and taylor in the final, with taylor winning by a nose. i don't understand all the anti-katharine sentiment--particularly the comments about her being "conceited", etc., which appear to be based on a few expressions on her face. as far as her recent pitch problems go, i think part of the problem has been the arrangements--they have forced her into discordant territories when the songs haven't warrented such "big" arrangements. who has the final say on the arrangements--anyone know? (i guess a lot of people don't remember when katharine and elliot were just about the only ones who picked a key and stuck to it earlier in the competition. unfortunately, she has had these problems later in the competition rather than earlier or not at all...)

Your question puts me in a quandry...and why?

I love Elliott, I only vote for Elliott, I make my kid's college friends watch Elliott, and yet, I'm okay if Elliott doesn't win. Now, I really want him to make it to the finals--against Kat, perferably, and she can win American Idol, and I'd be cool with that.

In my perfect world, Kat wins the title and does all the press tour, etc....and Elliott becomes the new "Clay Aiken" and stays home and makes an album.

For weeks, I've told everyone that would listen, that Chris would be a great front man for a rock band.... Steven Tyler-ish. Then Fuel offered him a job, and I'm happy.

Taylor, was born to be a Headliner in Las Vegas. Taylor is a perfomer..a wonderful, talented performer. You really want to see Taylor sing, and dance and flash that "Soul Patrol" grin. He would be money in the bank for some smart hotel owner....know any?

So American Idol Santa Claus. here is my list.

Katerine = American Idol Winner
Elliott = Good music sales
Taylor = Las Vegas Headliner

Katharine has the talent.. it's been hiding lately and she really needs to stop all thouse runs.. when she sings straight and true she's unbeatable. I agree with other comments that Taylor is more of a peformer than a singer and he hasn't changed or grown much since the beginning. Elliot has grown/improved the most of all final twelve performers. I'm just not into his stlye of singing. So, my vote will go to Katharine unless she blows it. I'd love to hear her sing the Eva Cassidy version of "Somewhere over the Rainbow" it's my favorite rendition of all versions of that song.. even the original.

The way I try to analyze these situations is with a simple question. Would I go and see them for free at a local music festival? Never mind paying, buying CD's, downloads... would I even bother to go to a local event if I could see them for free? Sorry all you Ell-idiots (sorry - just kidding), but he has to go. I say it's a Taylor/Kat final that ends with them in a tie, falling in love, getting married and then performing togehter in a Faith Hill/Tim McGraw kind of way!

Well I'm not over the shock about who the real winner really should be*** CHRIS***. I think that Idol needs to seriously think about a way to change the way voting is done in the future. Of course Chris will become the most popular person from Idol as yet over time and I have no doubt so I have to get over my anger and move on.
SO...
I really think Taylor, Elliot & Kat can sing. But-- I can honestly say if I was given the choice of seeing one of them perform in a concert, the only one I would go to see would be Taylor. The other 2 would bore me to death after 1 song. Kat & Elliot can sing but so far I have not been impressed with watching them perform and that is very important in this business. I guess the "whole package" is what I'm talking about. Taylor has his own style and really is fun to watch. I loved Chris the most, but I did find myself waiting to see Taylor perform every week.
Okay now Elliot I really like because he seems like such a nice person not because he has captured my attention. Only one performance really impressed me overall during the Elvis week which I will say was awesome. I really think his song selection hurt him overall for me. I know at this point my only reasons for voting for him would be because of the obstacles he has had to overcome and not because of what I have seen so far. So that means I will not vote for Elliot unless we get to pick between him dear Kat. Then hands down Elliot. Hopefully that will not happen. Although nothing will surprise me since Chris was voted off. Kat well she has a voice and she really is pretty but everytime I watch her she looks like a robot. Very mechanical and I want to just shake her and say loosen up and please go find someone to help u dress for tv. Her clothing ughghgh drives me nuts. She is too pretty and I can't believe someone has not suggested to dress for the camera. One of my favorite performances of hers was the one where she was on the floor and it could have been awesome if she wore something that complimented her. She just didn't look right being on the floor in that outfit. I swear I feel like her parents make her nervous every time she sings when they show them. I think she could be great in the future if she finds her comfort zone. So go Taylor.

I truly think all 3 are super talented and definitely already have a future in the business after their awesome performances on AI. I'm a little discouraged by the nasty look on Katherine's face during the last cast-off, it made her look a little ungrateful (just my opinion). Obviously, she knew she should be the one going home that night (I also agree but know we must move on). I still like her but my vote is for Elliott at this point. Katherine and Taylor are both fantastic but I think Elliott deserves the big break this time around :o)

I think the winner should be someone who can sell records and be heard on mainstream radio....the guys will not be able to do it.

I didn't say you said he was a copycat but the way you put it, he may as well be.

Sure, he can sing, but he's not marketable, plain and simple.

So everyone who is voting for Taylor is doing so because he puts on a good show? You can't see him on the radio, now can you?

No I'm actually voting for Taylor because I can imagine him having a better radio appeal and CD sales then the other two.

Actually, I take that back if Katherine were to win I could see her as the next Kelly Clarkson.

Celine Dion, Elton John, Wayne Newton, Reba McEntire and Barry Manilow are all performing in Las Vegas this week.

Bet if you ask any one them, they say it's great being a Las Vegas performer is a great way to make a living.

I didn't mean to insult Taylor with my comment. sorry.

Taylor all the way. He's been my favorite since I first saw him audition. I love, love, love him. I would like to see a Taylor/Elliot finale, with, of course, my Taylor boy winning.
BTW, I've been a lurker for a long time. Had no idea it was so easy to post a comment. Too bad I found out so late in the game.
GO TAYLOR.

I haven't been keeping track on paper, but two things are clear:

There ain't much love for Katharine around here. Poor kid.

And a lot of people love both the boys and it seems to be pretty split.

This is gonna be one fun week. I don't know when I've enjoyed a final week more than this one.

My prediction for tomorrow will go in tomorrow. I've given up trying to predict the whole thing. Everytime I think it's gonna be Taylor, I change my mind. Then I change it back. But I got some great insight today.

based on this board, I think one of the boys is going down if Kat sings well, because there is too much split between the boys and there is so much "i don't care as long as it's one of them and not Kat votes" :)

It's amazing all the sudden Elliot supporters though, since he had so much trouble staying off the eye of death :D I just wish them all good luck can't wait to hear/see how it turns out. Less than 24 hours to go!! wooohooo!

I love all three of them and can see them all having great careers. (Chris, too, as well as some of the others.) If I had to pick...Elliott. I've liked him since the Hollywood rounds, and he's grown on me even more as the season has progressed.

But I've gotta show love for the others, too. What I love about Taylor is the incredible joy that he seems to emanate. You can tell he has a great time up there, and last week, when he sang "Jailhouse Rock", I couldn't help but smile.

Katharine also has a great voice, although I do admit she tends to oversing. If she plays her cards right, I can see her performing on Broadway.

So like I said, I like all of three of them, for different reasons. I think I'd probably be happy no matter who won.

But I'm still pulling for an all-male finale.

I've had a tough time making a final choice but.. after reading the crappy song selections for Katharine -- nI'll be voting for her tonight. I'm think she's getting pulled in too many directions.. her mother, her fans, the judges and the "experts".. remember, she's only 21 and I'm sure when the pressure of competition is off she'll be terrific. All the "experts" who coached her loved her and her rehearsals always sounded great.. I think her poor performances now are due to youth, nervousness, inexperience and the pressure of competition, all of which can be overcome. So, that's it then. I'm voting for Katharine.

I completely agree about the forces Kat's dealing with, especially the parents. And it's not helping that she's the only female surrounded by guys.

And I totally agree that, of the three, she is getting royally screwed by song selection. Either they're really trying to test her mettle or they're setting her up to fail. Last girl they set up to fail was 17, so it's not uncommon.
