parades are a-waiting!: a SIMULBLOG...

It's been 24 hours since the Idols hit the Rock and Roll Hall. Or was that the wall?

In a nutshell, Archuleta crooned, Cook coasted, Syesha cried and Jason crashed. And burned. After shooting the sheriff.

Yes. That pretty much sums up the night.

It was, quite arguably, the worst final four episode in seven seasons.

And somebody's gonna pay the price tonight, because it's time to chop off the dread weight. Maybe.

Because THIS is American Idol.

And this is a SIMULBLOG, which means I'm typing as the action is happening live on the east coast, with a publishing break at every important stop, so if you don't wanna know, here's not the place you wanna be. If you want to be spoiled though, stick around, chat in the shoutbox and hit the refresh button occasionally to see what's going on.

Because the show's about to start!
_______

Ryan calls last night's show "dramatic." And he promises more drama. Plus Bo Bice.

Ryan begins grilling Randy on his Syesha-hate from the night before. The other judges get a moment to reflect on the performance episode before we get a group song.

The kids are "reeling in the years." And, as usual, the audio guy is asleep at the controls. But Judge Judy and Howie Mandel are in the crowd.
_______

We get the retrospective from last night. The kids are backstage looking at the monitor. Archuleta is called out first. He gets grilled by Ryan about nonsense as it's clear the kid just wants to know if he can go sit on the sofa of safety. He can. And he does.

And after a series of directorial missteps, we get sent to a commercial.
_______

The four kids got to visit Las Vegas, and we are treated to the highlights. Because they have only four kids and an hour to kill.

David Cook gets his command to appear onstage. He is reminded of his reviews from the night before. He says his head just wasn't in the right spot last night. But he's told to send his head to the sofa to join the other David.

Syesha Mercado and Jason Castro are called center stage. So it looks like this odd season (and I mean that in more ways than one) will not have the traditional final four shocker.
_______

The Idols are matadors fighting a Mustang in the crappy Ford commercial that is, at least, entertaining.

It's time for phone calls. Cook gets put on the spot by a woman wanting a date and Syesha gets bleeped when she gives more information than she was supposed to. And there were others, but I was too uninterested to listen. [The word they bleeped on Syesha was "commercial." Guess they don't want us knowing the kids are forced to pimp products.]

Now it's time for Maroon 5, because we only have four kids, two of them have been called safe, and we have 25 more minutes to kill.
_______

Bo Bice is back! I love Bo! But I'm not real fond of his new single. Maybe it needs time to grow on me. He tells the remaining kids to "practice, practice, practice."
_______

All the filler has pushed the show to seven minutes till the hour. Syesha and Castro are standing on the stage with Ryan.

Jason is reminded that he shot the sheriff, spared the deputy and got thoroughly panned for it. Ryan makes a funny about his flubbed lyrics. Jason makes a funny about shooting Mr. Tambourine Man.

Syesha gets her reviews from the night before. No funny remarks about about her tears.

Both of them get to discuss last night. Syesha gets deep and political.

Syesha is told she's getting a parade. Jason applauds and hugs her sweetly. He looks happier than she does.

We all get to remember Jason's journey to the sound of Ruben. And he sings the show out in the wildest, happiest sing out I have ever seen.

So long Jason. You were fun to watch.

Good luck.

I missed Syesha getting *bleeped*! They do realize that the whole audience heard, right? :)

Could they be less thrilled about the group sing? I really don't blame them one bit.

I'm going to miss Jason. He really cracked me up when he said (something like) you can't go wrong with "the Bobs" (Marley and Dylan) last night.

Does anyone know what next week is?

That group sing was really lifeless. This is the week they are supposed to be celebrating Rock and Roll and they have them sing "Reeling in the Years"?

YES! YES! YES! About time we got rid of the "dread" weight in this competition! Finally, a show I may once again look forward to.

And I agree, pretty poor songs for Rock & Roll week. Even my lovely David Cook was off.

Am I the only one, but does David A sound exactly the same no matter what he sings? Of course he will win, because THIS is American Idol and it's extremely predictable. Sure would like to be wrong for once.

And I LOVE Bo too. Always have. I so wanted him to win. Not nuts about this new song but he certainly looked HOT HOT HOT !!!!

I'll miss Jason! And yes, he looked to be the happiest eliminated contestant in history. His candidness about being inexperienced and being relieved was pretty refreshing. Good luck to you Jason!

Next week will be boring without him unless David C brings it on.

And those matador pants were something. I laughed out loud at Ryan's comment on them.

I thought the *bleep* was my TV acting up! Why would they bleep someone saying "commercial"?! Weird.

Jason said it all. His inexperience is what killed him in the end. I couldn't agree more. He's only 20. He's got a LOT of time to mature and hone his craft. He was definitely the right one to go, but I will miss his goofiness, his lovely smile, and his sweet disposition. Good luck, Jason Dread. I'll be listening for you on the airwaves.

I felt really sorry for the Final 4 having to wear those silly matador costumes! And you could tell DC did too! lol

And finally, I could do without Maroon 5, who have NOTHING whatsoever to do with the show. And I could do with a whole lot more of Bo!!! It was great to see and hear him again! He is such a throw-back to the early 70s! I LOVE IT!! I loved the song he sang and think I may be getting that cd!

MORE PAST IDOLS, PLEASE!!!

It just dawned on me that they like to refer to the crappy Ford commercials as "Ford videos. When Syesha called it a commercial, they blanked her audio out probably to keep the Mustang happy.

Next week is final 3. Three songs. One chosen by the judges, one personal choice, and one chosen by Clive Davis, although with Clive being put on the shelf, no telling who is going to make that selection. They might wheel him out, though, for old times sake.

This is where, if the vote is as close as they say, they will throw Syesha under a bus.

Just a thought for the Castronauts - where do you think Jason ranks in the pantheon of 4th place finishers?

I liked Jason. I thought he peaked when he played the ukulele, though that was awesome for me. IMO the 3 remaining are better singers & performers but that's probably due to their experience. I think Jason is a true amateur and (for me) what this contest is about. He's only going to get better. I juxtapose that with Carly - she was at the top of her game, she wasn't going to get any better. She failed the first time around, where was the evidence that shot #2 was going to be any better? Jason had/has only one direction - up.

Non sequitur - "I Shot the Tambourine Man" - Funny stuff & true Jason.

Here are my rankings for the 4th place finishers.

1. Chris D.
2. LaToya
3. Tamyra
4. Josh
5. Lakisha
6. Anthony
7. Jason

Jason's staying power was in his charm, not his talent. Of the other 4th placers, Chris and LaToya had legitimate arguments that they should have won, while Tamyra was still going to finish 3rd at best.

Josh and Lakisha landed in about the right place while Anthony and Jason went further than they deserved.

Anybody else think that Renaldo, a.k.a., the "I Am Your Brother" guy, would have been great to bring back for the Idol Gives Back episode? It would have totally fit the theme. :)

As for the elimination, I wasn't too surprised. I'd already predicted the bottom 2 before they ever sang a note on Tuesday. The Davids' fanbases are forces to be reckoned with, that's for sure.

I wish Jason the best of luck, whatever he decides to do.

Maroon 5 was HORRIBLE. GOD. If Adam Levine were on AI he'd have gotten kicked off faster than Luke Menard. That was torture - we turned the TV down after a few bars because he was piercing our eardrums.

Bo Bice, on the other hand, was pretty darn cool and enjoyable, in a throw-back classic rock kinda way.

"Carly - she was at the top of her game, she wasn't going to get any better. She failed the first time around,..."

a point of correction, Carly did not "fail" the first time, she never HAD a first time. She was unable to compete due to immigration status issues, hence her retrying now that those issues were resolved.

overall, this is probably the correct Top 3 for how things played out, but in truth, Michael Johns and Carly should have been around longer and Jason and Brooke probably should have gone sooner, if one based it on quality of performance over popularity :)

I may be wrong, but I think the commenter was referring to Carly's first attempt at a CD, which tanked, not her first try at Idol.

I like Syesha, but I can't help but believe that with Carly or Michael this would have been one of the strongest F3s ever. Still not as good as S2, but better than S5.
