from 9 to 8: a SIMULBLOG!...

There's a scent in the Idol air. And all the signs point to a surprise. According to DialIdol, eight of the nine are in position to get kicked out of the arena. (That's everybody but Doolittle and a real good way to ensure a great prediction percentage!) The betting sites are putting their money on a Gina exit. But this is the traditional week of the first SHOCKER. Could LaKisha be headed home a week or two early? We're minutes away from finding out.

Because THIS is American Idol.

And this is a SIMULBLOG, where I'm typing as the action's unfolding so there will be typos and incoherent thoughts, so if you're in the West and you don't want to be spoiled, this might not be the best place to hang out for awhile.

Just be sure to stop back by and discuss the destruction.

As usual we are treated to the highlights/lowlights from the performance night before, just in case we have forgotten who was good (Melinda), who was bad (Haley), and who totally stunk up the joint (Phil). And then we get to watch 289 commercials, because somebody's gotta pay the bills around here.

Random thought: Blades of Glory looks like a movie somebody would have to pay me to watch.

And the kids have gone green with Kermit in the FORD commercial. Hmmm. Looks like a retread of last season.

Oh no. They're doing the three groups of three again, just like last season.

Blake Lewis, Chris Richardson and Sanjaya Malakar are in the first trio. (The Dudes.)
Haley Scarnato, Gina Glocksen and Phil Stacey are in the second trio. And Gina looks like she's ready to hurl.
Jordin Sparks, Melinda Doolittle and LaKisha Jones are in the third group. (The Divas)

The divas are sent to safety.
The three dudes are sent to safety.

And, just as I called it (along with every other blogger in the universe) Haley, Gina and Phil are the three lucky bottom-feeders.

Ryan tells us that we're in store for a "very special" live performance, carefully skirting the well-known fact that Michael Buble will be subbing for the sick Tony Bennett.

But somebody's gotta pay the bills, so we have to watch 2 hours of commercials first. (This must be why the results shows are going to an hour starting next week. Yeah. That's why.)

IDOL CHALLENGE!! Brain-buster! Pick A and text to 51555! Chicken Little!!

Yeah, yeah. It's Buble. I woulda preferred a group sing. Maybe when the show goes to an hour we'll get our group sings back, pointy-poses and all.

I really don't like commercials...

The bottom feeders are standing on the seal. Phil is sent back to the couch.

Haley and Gina exchange big hugs, and the judges try to make things all better.

Each of the girls are reminded of their reviews from the previous night. Both are looking sick. Just under 33 million votes cast, and Gina's told to get the hell out of Dodge. Everyone is stunned on the sofa. Gina is bawling, probably because she should never have waved goodbye before the two who stood with her on the stage.

She gets to watch her funeral video while Ryan holds her securely. I hope she doesn't throw Mr. Pickle into the ocean. And her song, Smile, seems sadly prophetic.

She shoulda lost the tongue jewelry.

So long Gina.

So, what's your thoughts? Please discuss.

I voted for Gina for two hours straight - I had a feeling she'd be going, which is too bad since I think she's much more talented than Haley and Phil (and, of course, Hair Boy). But that's the way the cookie crumbles, I suppose. :P

The Hello Kitty contingent can now go to bed. The tone deaf Phil fans have another week with their hero. And the hormone raging teen boys can ogle Haley's T & A, though I'm not sure why, for another week.

Let's face it, younger Americans have bad taste.... why else would Paris Hilton be popular?

I'll miss Gina.
I was shocked when Haley made it to the top twelve. I never imagined she would hang around this long. She'd make a fine Miss America...but not American Idol.
And Phil just gives me the heebie jeebies.
Very sad.

I'm really pretty surprised. I'd have bet money it would be Phil going tonight.

the vampire/space alien voting bloc - hahahahaha.

I love Michael Buble's last CD, but I have to agree that he SUUUUUCCCKKED tonight. He didn't enunciate at ALL. What's up with that? If he were a contestant, he'd have gotten slammed by the judges....but then again, so would have all the guest singers...

I am just sick about the way this season has gone thus far. The likes of Haley and Sangina should not still be on the show. I don't know how, but I wish AI would revamp its voting system so that it would be based on TALENT, not the lack thereof. For those of us who watch the show for the reason it was intended, and vote accordingly, this season has been a continous slap in the face.

Grrrrr .... !!!!

This is a reality TV show and is primarily intended for entertainment purposes. The plot is similar every year. There is always one contestant that goes further than anyone thinks is correct. It's kin of like WWE Raw. There has to be someone to hate and someone to love. "Mowgli" is the evil force this year. Unfortunately, this year the show is so void of talent that it would be incredibly boring without him.

At this point I think Mowgli not only has the Hello Kitty vote, he's making 7-11 clerks all over the country proud. His success may be part of an Al Quieda plot to control the air ways. Haley is obviously listening to Simon and showing off her legs. The only way she can show more leg next week is by wearing a thong!! Phil, Phil, Phil, what can I say. He has to be riding the sympathy wave in order to survive. Next week don't be suprised to see Justin Timberlake Jr. make an appearance in the bottom 3 unless it gets to busy at all of the 7-11 for Mowgli's fans to vote.

well, my bracket's blown up :) Gina I guess, just didn't stay rocker chic

Will say I'm a little shocked, as if they told us the truth, Melinda and Kiki are top 3 vote getters, and I didn't like Kiki's at all. I've been suspecting that the 2 of them have been splitting votes, and that can't be if they both made the top 3. So, that really makes me wonder what's going on in America this year :)

Then again, Wouldn't that make next week and even bigger shocker if Kiki or Melinda got the sack? What a shocker that would be. hmmm....conspiracy anyone? :D

This season is seeming to be a trainwreck, and unless something changes, I'm not expecting the winner (unless it's Jordin or Blake) to have better sales than Ruben and Fantasia, but it sure seems there is less buzz around anyone right now. Hopefully someone we want to buy records from shows up in the next 4 weeks. Melinda is a great singer sure, but how many people watching the show are going to buy the type of album she'd do? And what are the producers going to do with all the bubble gum music? She can't sing that crap and be believable! Well, I guess they'd have to find some real music for once haha

It's my belief that Phil's votes are coming from the armed forces.. wasn't he the one who's carrier had the competition to determine which of them would try out for AI? If that's the case then he could receive a lot of votes just from his crew members and possibly other carriers and military bases as well.
Anyway, I'm bereft that Gina was sent home. It was NOT her time. The other two on the seal with her, not to mention a certain hairy dude, should have gone before her.
I've been watching AI for three years now and I've never teared up when someone was sent home.. except for last night.
And, she did a lovely job singing her swan song.. tears and all!!
Bye Gina, you'll be missed!

Vote for Sanjaya Tee shirts, lol I'm not brave enough to do that. If I wore one around here you'd probably be reading about me in the papers. In the obituaries!

You all have to admit after Sanajaya goes, which won't be for a couple more weeks, it will be boring. We won't have anything to rag about. PS, I like his hair cut.

Phil or Haley should be next in line to go, unless someone other then Sanjaya really screws up next week.

What's the theme for next week?

I don't know about anyone else but I'd rather see a group song then listen to these guest. I don't think non of them would of made it through the auditions. lol Especially Michael Buble.

I think there are several aspects of being a star, talent, charisma, being orginal, its a package deal.

Even though Melinda is a great singer I don't like watching her. She has the talent but that's all. Same for Kiki. I think Jordin has it all, I keep forgetting she is just 17. She's fun to watch, and she is only going to get better.

As far as the guys go, who knows. Sanjaya could be the last one standing.

Its AI anything can happen.

Two comments you made were things that I immediately said last night:

"Smile, seems sadly prophetic."

"She shoulda lost the tongue jewelry." AFter seeing what happened to Chris Daltry last season I cannot understand why she felt that a tongue ring would NOT have a negative voting influence. Personally, I would have liked to see her wear something other than black also.
I really felt bad when she was crying. You could see she was stunned to be the one being sent home. Yes, Haley's legs swayed the vote in her favor but she can't hang on much longer.

Jennifer -

I would think as a fellow lover of all things "Bo" (Bice, that is), that you would be running out to see Blades of Glory, since he wrote and performed the title theme song! ;-) Apparently Ben Stiller (producer) is a big Bo fan, also. Actually, I haven't seen the film either, but you can hear the song on the movie's myspace page.

As for AI6 and Gina's departure, this year the worst three singers, actually since the top 16, seem to have some sort of Teflon coating while all the folks in the middle keep dropping like flies... As long as they don't touch the top tier (Melinda, Jordin, and LaKisha), I'm still ok with it... but GEEZ, you would think at least ONE of them would have to go soon! Sanjaya is one thing, but surely Haley or Phil (Uncle Fester) don't have enough fans to outlast Blake or Chris!

Blogger Dave said...

I'm moving Lakisha out of my top tier. I think she's a one trick pony and unless she broadens her scope a little, I see a surprising early exit (a la J-Hud and Mandisa) for her.

For me, the three people to beat right now are Melinda, Blake and Jordin (pretty much in that order).

Jennifer, thanks for clearing that up about Phil and the carrier Idol competition.. on reflection, I do think I remember the guy from the contest wore a uniform and I don't think Phil did.. however, he could still be getting the armed forces vote (though judging from that one picture, Haley could be snapping up that vote too). Regardless, neither of them should have outlasted Gina.

I agree Dave. I won't be surprised to see Sanjaya outlast LaKisha. She's starting to bore people (me) and her continued refusal to take the mentors' suggestions is starting to smack of arrogance. And we all know that voters don't tolerate that for long.

But I put Jordin before Blake. I think she'll outlast him. And should.

2:33 PM, April 05, 2007
Anonymous Anonymous said...

I agree about LaKisha and wouldn't be that sad to see her go, and in fact I get irritated at Melinda for not showing more versatality in the finals (she picked Broadway songs for both Diana Ross and British Invasion weeks). I just can't get behind Blake because he makes every song sound the same... and Chris sings through his nose.

Sanjaya, Phil, and Haley never should have made the finals (bring back AJ, Sabrina, and.... Jared?) I certainly wouldn't be that surprised to see one or two of them outlast LaKisha, but all three? Unthinkable. But we shall see next week, I guess, because I don't see Melinda, Jordin, Blake, or Chris going anywhere.

I'm not a LaKisha fan, but be careful what you believe from the pre-song clips. Remember how they made it sound like Ace and Queen were fighting, like he hated the arrangement of the song? The statement from the guy on the Queen website said that he had made that comment before he heard the song and later had supported Ace and told him he was great, but they didn't show that part... they pick the clips at least partly based on trying to stir up controversy (i.e. ratings).

4:26 PM, April 05, 2007
Blogger jennifer said...

You're exactly right Johanna, about the manipulation. They LOVE controversy. Problem is that most of the voters aren't as hardcore fans as us, so they might not see that they could be being played.

Wouldn't surprise me if they're portraying LaKisha this way to have her ousted before Sanjaya. The boy is getting tons of press, lots of controversy, which equals ratings, and to have him outlast her, like John Stevens did Jennifer Hudson, would be gold for them. I just can't see them wanting her to win this thing. Why else make a point of showing every single time how LaKisha is given advice and refuses to take it. I'm sure there's plenty of other footage they could choose to use.

Gina wasn't my favorite, but I'm sad to see her go. She certainly didn't deserve to go before Haley! I was happy that Phil made it through. (*ducking*) I don't know why, but I like the guy. Maybe it's because he defends our country. (I know, I know...that doesn't equal talent. But I happen to like his voice, too.)

As for Lakisha, I think Johanna may be right. She could be suffering from the Ace factor. I was rather shocked to hear her end her song the way she did, after Tony had given her such pointed advice. Personally I think it ruined the song to put the gospel tag on the end. Hated it. But otherwise I really like Kiki.

But not as much as I like Jordin and Melinda. Melinda has been my favorite (and my pick to win) from the very beginning. Jordin is an absolute doll and has shown tremendous growth from week to week. This girl is a serious contender! If Melinda weren't in this, Jordin would be my hands-down favorite.

As for Mowgli (LOL! that's awesome!), we'll just have to endure for several more weeks. At least he cut the locks.

Don't blame young people for the results! I know PLENTY of people who hate Sanjaya and Phil (and some don't like Haley), and were very sad to see Gina go! Although I have to admit, most of the guys support Haley for her looks. But I don't know a SINGLE person (of any age) who supports Sanjaya or Phil! So don't blame young people!

Also, most of the VFTW/Howard Stern supporters aren't young people. Think about that.

"somebody said", you got a point there, about the young people. I didn't mean to come down on them for voting for Sanjaya, they have a right to vote for who ever they want.
After seeing that little girl crying the other night, I just don't think she is the only little kids crazy about Sanjaya. I think that is where his true fan base comes from.
Its scary to think that VFTW and Howard Stern supporters have that much pull.
If your truly like a performer you should vote for them, but what VFTW is doing is just plain sick, and I always knew Stern wasn't all there.

I do think Melinda will probably win this, and she doesn't need my votes. So all my votes will go to Jordin. I hope she ends up in the top 3.

If everyone who votes for Lakisha and Melinda just stopped voting for the two of them, what do you think would happen? Oh I know, we would end up with an American Idol winner who would end up like Fantasia and Ruben...NOWHERE! Jeez, even J-Hud knew to jump to the movie industry because she would end up just like her friend Bobo (is it a coincidence that Fantasia calls her dance the Bobo which means stupid in spanish?). So, lets all stop voting for Melinda and Lakisha and give Jordin or Blake a chance. (We all know that Sanjaya has that chance already)

Anyways back on track, I'm sad to see Gina go, but not surprised in the least bit. This season is ridiculous but I still watch cos I like to hear the music. That is what it's all about, right? The music? Oh well!

I still think that a huge number of Mowgli's votes are coming from 15-19 year olds with "hacker" mentalities. They just enjoy messing with the system, any system. They would write in Al Gore for the Republican primary if they thought it could actually happen and screw up the system. They would book Andrew Dice Clay to a NOW convention and not tell him, just to mess with everyone's life...and they would see great humor in doing such a thing. Their satisfaction comes irritating the rest of society and the subject matter is not important.

The sad part of this whole thing is that AI is letting it happen because of the publicity and ratings that they enjoy as a result of the controversy. Since the votes are not public information, AI has the ability to step in and vote Mowgli of the island at any moment, but they choose to allow the charade to continue. He will probably not finish higher than 5th. While Lakisha, as Dave as rightly said, is showing herself to be a "One Trick Pony", will still finish in the top four with Melinda, Blake, and Jordin. Don't be suprised if Jordin continues to pick up the younger voters of those who are departing each week and find herself in the final show. Melinda will get Lakisha's voters while Blake is the pre-teen heart throb and will get all of Chris Richardson's fans when he gets eliminated.

It's also a little-known fact that Fox can manipulate the vote results if they want. If you've taken the time to read the fine print about the "contest" rules, Fox says they can discard any votes they consider to be "fraudulant" and the show is not regulated as a contest because it is "entertainment".

That's why I've stopped referring to the people on the show as "contestants" and I call them singers.

Fox loves Sanjaya. The loved Scott Savol. They loved John Stevens. And they chewed each of them up and spit them out.

Keeping undeserving people around is what makes the show unique. That's why they don't vote people off. It would ruin the intrigue, suspense and drama.

If this really were a singing competition, they would have a competent panel of judges who would score each singer objectively as a vocalist and as a performer. That would be the sole determinant of a competition. By letting "America" decide who the winner is, they have turned the show from a singing competition to a popularity contest, a fact highlighted by Peter Noone a couple of weeks ago.

The fact of the matter is that Fox loves the publicity and they love the controversy. That's the reason why nobody schedules anything of consequence against American Idol and won't for many more years.

I'm so sad that I can't keep up with the blog as much this year. I don't actually get to watch either episode of AI until Thursday nights and everything has been talked about by then =(

But what the heck, I will put in my 2 cents anyway =)

Jennifer - you are dead on about Lakisha. Her refusal to take advice is seeming very arrogant. I was yelling at the TV - "C'mon Lakisha!! TONY BENNET!! LISTEN TO TONY!!!" And her performance, to me, really wasn't good. I was really surprised to hear the judges gush.

The thing that killed me about Haley on both nights was the fact that, when Simon said she had nice legs (and then when Ryan reminded her the next night), she gave this face like she was annoyed, like she only wanted to hear a critique of her performance instead of the clothes. Um, HELLO?!?!? If you don't want someone to comment on your legs, then maybe try not coming out onto the stage NAKED.

Melinda - I love her to death. She blows me away every week. I want to hug her. And I will absolutely buy her album when it comes out, whether she is the winner or not.

I feel the absloute opposite for Sanjaya. If the kid was in his right mind, he would quit the show cos it's just embarassing at this point. I disagree with Randy and do NOT find him entertaining. The fact that he is not even in the bottom 3 is kinda scary.

Phil. Hmmmm... I like his singing sometimes, but I always have to listen to the song with my eyes closed cos, dang it, he just needs some hair. And with my eyes closed, he's really a pretty decent singer. But not great.

Blake - Cute. Pretty good singer and the definition of cool. And I think he looks almost exactly like Bono. Even all his mouth movements are just like Bono's. Just a young, blond Bono.

I'm sad to see Gina go. She gave some personality to the show and although I HATED the stupid tongue ring, I was mesmerized by her pretty eyes. And she did not deserve to go before H, P or S.

Jordin is getting better and better. Who doesn't love this girl? She is young, beautiful, sparkly, and she can sang. Good luck to her!

Chris Richardson. Jennifer, I understand what you are saying about the nasal singing. But despite that, I am in love with this kid. I enjoy his songs and I think he is SOOOOOOO cute. Did you see his smile when Randy said it was his best performance? Oh my gosh, if not, go back and watch, it melted me! Also, and this is gonna sound SO SAPPY, but here goes - I have been a huge fan of his ever since he said he was 'husky' all his life and lost 40 lbs by eating right. I have fought with weight my whole life, too, and I dunno. I just love him to bits. And man... CUTE.

And that is all. I hope to see Haley, Phil and Sanjaya go next (don't we all?).

Melinda's too good to win - has the best winner (aside from Kelly Clarkson) ever actually won?

In the finale I predict... Blake and Jordin. That would be a rockin last episode.

Thanks again for your blog, Jennifer, I LOVE IT!

Hello to Nancy D in Waretown. =)

getting curious, thank YOU!! I'm not alone!! I've been saying for weeks that Blake and Jordin are the likeliest final 2 :) I can't see Melinda making it, as I don't see her base growing as any of the others, other than Kiki, drops out. It'd be interesting to know where Gina's go, but I suspect they'll split amoung Jordin, Blake, Chris, and Phil.

I don't forsee both Kiki and Melinda making the final 4, though maybe this will be the odd year. I haven't likely Chris at all, but with some many people talking about how much they like him, I'm starting to get the feeling he'll end up in 4th or 5th. The stick in the mud of course is Sanjaya. If he makes it past the 6th slot, God help us all! :) If he gets that far, he could easily become the next Jasmine!! I bet Fox would love the commotion that would cause haha

i think you're all forgetting that gina was off pitch about 40% of her music time. plus...she actually went on stage and performed the show in a tank top with her bra-straps in full view. this is WITH the stylists aiding her. i understand being a "rocker" means that you don't always dress banana republic preppy perfect. but black bra straps sneaking out of her too tight, luminescent tank top really is trashy looking. looks matter and wardrobe/image does also.

she didn't appear to be a classy girl. and honestly, she wasn't an amazing vocalist-though not terrible.

i was quite pleased with her dismissal.

dave-you're absolutely right about the votes being (virtually) worthless. however, fox was using this facet to argue with stern and other media that claims they are "throwing" the results to undermine the show.

Personally, I think that Jordin has the potential to be another Kelly Clarkson... she has the sparkle, personality and is growing every week in her talent.. and she would appeal more to the younger age group (I know, I'm the older age group but I enjoy music of now.. not of my own age group..lol)... Melinda is an excellent singer but I don't see that she'd have as wide a fan base as Jordin who is cute and bubbly, not deer in the headlights shocked every time she gets a compliment.. I don't think that I would be interested in buying an album of Melinda's.. but that is just my personal opinion... Kat

Even if Melinda doesn't win, she'll get a record contract from 19, and sell a bunch of albums - I'd buy her album today after hearing her sing My Funny Valentine. She is like Anita Baker, soulful and jazzy and beautiful. BUT, not pop marketable. Blake has the best shot at pop marketable. Jordin second best shot at it.

Kiki will go the way of Mandisa.

BTW, check out ew.com for great articles and interviews about AI. In one interview, one of the contestants says that they are very careful about keeping the votes honest... so I don't necessarily buy into the conspiracy theories about FOX....

p.s., the "mowgli" and "7-11" comments are inappropriate and racist. If you guys who are saying that stuff were actors on Grey's Anatomy, you'd be in "rehab" right now and in danger of losing your jobs. I am personally offended and I hope that most of the rest of us are, too.

I agree with Kathryn, I'll take Jordin over Melinda any day.

Melinda can sing, but for me she is the female Phil. Not her singing, but I just don't enjoy watching her sing. She just seems ODD on stage. I think there's a reason she is a back up singer

Sorry all you Melinda fans.

hey anonymous...you are correct. I'm sure the 40-100 demographic was less than excited. here's the thing: i'm 22. and i'm not anywhere close to being helpless in fashioning myself everyday.
yeah, haley's irony was a pretty lame card for her to play, but she kept all body parts securely fastened, no panty-lines, and while the skirt was ridiculously short, it looked nice on her toned body.
hardly trashy.
for the record-i think haley is almost as bad a singer as sanjaya. it's a toss up really...and her big notes are so dramatic and wrong technique-wise.

With the LaKisha thing, the guest coaches are probably giving each contestant 20 pieces of advice, of which each contestant probably takes some and choses not to on others. For some reason, the producers and editors have decided to "portray" LaKisha's "character" on the reality show as someone who is arrogant and doesn't take advice, so each week they show her getting a piece of advice that they know, from rehersals, etc., that she chose not to follow. We have no way of knowing, out of all the advice she got, what percentage she followed. We also have no way of knowing what percentage other people followed, but that just may not "fit" with the "character" the producers have built for another contestant.
