finding the six: a SIMULBLOG!...

We're cutting the field in half, finally, just in time for the big "Idol Saves the World!" spectacular next week. Country night wasn't kind to half of the kids, so it's anyone's guess who's biting the dust tonight.

We do know, though, that we'll be clearing up any stupid idea that Simon was rolling his eyes at the Virginia Tech tragedy, we know we'll be hearing from Martina McBride, but we don't know why exactly, and we know that Idol will pull out its favorite "make one of the kids choose between his friends" trick.

Because THIS is American Idol.

And this is a SIMULBLOG, which means I'm typing as the action is unfolding live on the east coast, publishing at every important break, with spoilers galore, not to mention typos and incoherent thought patterns, so if you live in another time zone and want not to know before it's time for you to know, find somewhere else to hang out for the next hour. But come back and complain with the rest of us after the show.

_______

Sanjaya asks Ryan why he's looking at him as Ryan asks "is your favorite safe?" See? The show wouldn't be the same without him. Sanjaya, that is. Not Ryan.

Simon sets the whole "I didn't disrespect VT" notion straight. And there's a Bucky sighting! Ryan says we're gonna hear from Fergie. (Why?) And Martina McBride. (Okay, we knew that.) And we get a sneak peek at Shrek III. (WHAT?)

This stupid one-hour result show really is getting on my nerves. There are plenty of Idols with CDs on the charts. Why can't we hear from them instead of Fergie? Hell, Bucky Covington's in the damn audience. Let him sing!

I'm not even going to dignify Ryan's visit with "normal people." Cause I gotta pee.
_______

The kids are "Doin' Alright" in the group sing. But it's a bummer because the only choreography resembles a high-tech round of musical stools. But sound-wise, it's not offensive.
_______

We find out what music the kids listen to. Oh goody. And we get to hear Fergie. yay. Now that's a country chick, for sure. I'd rather hear from Bucky or any of the Idol alumni. Ruben, Daughtry, Taylor, Katharine and Elliott must have had other plans tonight. Kelly will be here next week, and Fantasia, Carrie and Pickler have already made appearances.
_______

Pretty good Ford COMMERCIAL! Ryan's hyping the "Idol is the BEST" charity special. I can appreciate all of the marquee names slated to appear, but I might have contributed had they made it an Idol reunion instead. Oh well. They didn't ask me.
_______

Ryan's got the kids on the stage. And he says one group is the highest vote getters, and the other is, well, not.

Sanjaya is sent one way; Phil is sent the other.
Jordin is told to join Team Phil; LaKisha is sent to Team Sanjaya.
Blake is told to join Team Sanjaya; Chris is sent to Team Phil.

And Melinda gets to choose, just like I thought.

And she sits squarely on the seal. This girl's got class!

Ryan tells her to join Team Phil, leaving Team Sanjaya at the bottom.
_______

Hawking Shrek the Third. Hearing Martina McBride. Her kid is cute.
_______

The kids are on the seal, just waiting.

Blake is sent back to safety.

LaKisha and Sanjaya get their reviews. Over 38 million votes are sending Sanjaya home. He gets major hugs from LaKisha, and he and we get to see his funeral video to the sound of Daughtry, and the sight of Sanjaya's tears.

This show just got a lot more boring.

Bummer.

So long, Sanjaya. You made this season fun.

Well since this is a simul-blog, lol, I'm just enjoying the moment, seeing Sanjaya in the Bottom 3. Where he belongs.

And I agree with the performer choices. Why Fergie?

Well, anything for ratings, right?

He cried. Poor kid. Well, he rode it out a lot longer than most people wanted him to. Now he's tossed to the outside world.

His career will be interesting to watch. More interesting than the rest.

Or will he be another John Stevens (who was equally "unique" and "distinctive") who falls off the face of the earth?

I've never heard of John Stevens, but Sanjaya has dominated the news about American Idol this season -- he is a household name! He will definitely come out of this with some kind of career. And I agree, the show just got more boring. I was hoping LaKisha was going home...

p.s. Sanjaya wasn't THAT bad. I liked him.

Do any of the rest of you think that this one hour show is nothing more than one BIG commerical?

With all due respect to Sanjaya, I am very happy to see him depart AL6!

Hillary Clinton was asked about Sanjaya. He's made a name for himself.

Let's tell the unabashed truth here.....YES!!!! finally that no talent creep is gone, and good riddance!!!!!!!!!! He had no business being in the top 10, or even being on that stage. Right now, he's so 15 minutes ago. Enjoy oblivion Sanjaya...I will not miss you.

SUNSHINE (cos I can't get into my blogger account)

Well, as much as I'm not surprised and also not bummed out, I actually thought LaKisha was the one to boot this week. She's very lucky, and she's gotta step it up, which makes me fear for Jordin...Melinda I could care less about.

I predicted the bottom 3 exactly as it was, with Blake being safe. Chris got votes from crying and showing concern for VT (which was very honorable especially being from there), Phil (shocker) and Jordin were both incredible so they were definitely in the top.

Phil reminds me a little of Josh Gracin, being the country boy that no one really knew was country (Carrie and Pickler were obvious) and even though he wasn't the favorite got to the top 4 because he was country/in the military. I give Phil a lot of respect just as I did Josh. (p.s. saw Josh in concert 2 summers ago and he was pretty good!)

Anyways, Sanjaya's votes are probably going to go to Blake and whoever VFTW picks as their backup. I still want to see Blake and Jordin in the finale. Can they pull a "Trump double firing" and get rid of Lakisha and Melinda in the same week? Oh well!

P.S.~ Bucky was there because he's performing on AI Extra after the show. Watch it on Fox Reality Channel. It airs Thursday though and I don't know what time cos I have the DVR to record it...after 10pm though est. I think Fergie was just a filler, cos she has a new album and is probably contributing to AI gives back!

WOW! You're a real sweetheart. Or did you forget he's just a 17 year old kid getting up there every week doing his best. Don't be such a hater. Blame the voters for keeping him around, not a nice kid with a sweet smile who helped make this season interesting.

While I have railed against his performances and refused to call him by name in protest, there are a couple of things that we must remember about Sanjaya. First, he is only seventeen years old. Second, he can still sing better than 99% of us who critique him each week.
Sanjaya has potential. He needs a good vocal coach and a couple of years of real experience. He needs to get a gig and sing, sing, sing. Most of the contestants are the front singers for local bands and they sing in front of live audiences every week. I get the impression that Sanjaya is the closest thing to a pure amateur in the competition. Melinda on the other hand is the closest thing to a professional recording artist in the competition. She brings talent and experience to the table. Sanjaya just brings hope and potential and compared to Jordin, he may be considered a "late bloomer". Although I don't know how anyone that is seventeen can be considered a "late bloomer'.
I am not sorry that he is gone, because he was responsible for the departure of several more deserving talents, including Sundance Head, but if he is willing to pay his dues, he could still have a career in entertainment.
I'm through preachin' now.

Fergie's Candies shoes commercials during Idol and her singing last night are marketing, marketing, marketing! I agree it would have been great if Bucky sang. He does have a new CD out. Too bad that Sanjaya left after Stephanie and Sabrina. They should have had a longer run, but that's the way the vote bounces, or crumbles, or whatever. I can't decide between Melinda and Jordin. That would be an amazing finale if they were the top 2. But then I couldn't vote!

Why was Fergie performing during Country Week? *scratches head* That seemed random. But that's Idol for you.

I'll admit that I wasn't too broken up over Sanjaya's departure, but I have to give him props for making this season A LOT more interesting than it would've been otherwise. He seemed like a nice kid, but vocally he just wasn't ready. But that's just my opinion.

I did have to laugh at his line about the hair. As Jennifer said, it was probably rehearsed, but it was still cute.

Jennifer,

I won't be truly content until I see you gray out Sanjaya's photo on your right side bar! :)
I'm happy now that Sanjaya won't be holding a place that his talent didn't earn. I don't like the fact that the results show is an hour, but thank goodness for DVR! I may watch it live again after Chris and Phil are gone :)

Oh Vivian, you know how I always adopt the strays in this show. I voted for John Stevens too.

Listen to Sanjaya's studio recordings; they are really good. He's got a good studio voice, but not yet ready for prime time.

Can't blame him for Sabrina; that was Haley's fault. Can't blame him for being in the finals; that was the judges' fault. Can't blame him for making it to 7th; that was the voters' fault.

This insistence of turning what used to be a contestant-driven show into nothing more than a glorified infomercial for stars w/CDs is getting sour. And not just for me, I suspect.

I'm not a Sanjaya fan, but I do give him credit. I know I never could do what he did at 17.

#1 I can't sing, lol
#2 I wouldn't have been brave enough to stand up to the judges every week.

The only reason he stayed as long as he did, wasn't from are votes, it was the VFTW people who voted for him. If you take their votes away I don't think he would of lasted too long.

They think its funny I guess, but its really mean. Its mean to another contestant who deserved to be there and it was mean to Sanjaya.

He just wasn't ready. Hopefully Sanjaya will stay with his music and he will get better. Hopefully when he is ready the non-fans will be ready to accept him.

Jennifer;
I really think you have hit on something with the Idol Reunion!
At least have former contestants come in each week and pimp their albums. It would certainly be more entertaining that Akon or Fergie. The appearances of Taylor Hicks, Josh Gracin, Bo Bice, Carrie Underwood, Elliot Yamin, Katherine Mcphee, Chris Daughtry, Diana DeGarmo (?), Ruben Studdard, Clay Akin, J Hud, etc. would provide great motivation for current contestants and let them know that there is a life and possible career after Idol. It would also keep Idol viewers and fans interested in the careers of former contestants. Right now it is, "Out of sight, out of mind". To me, this is a win/win situation. It validates the purpose of the show, extends the career of some of the contestants and gives the viewers a little nostalgia. It just doesn't get much better than that.

Jennifer and Jr I agree 100% about a reunion. That's what AI fans want to see.

the least they could do is have each winner perform, but having a selection of the top 5 or six from each year would be fantastic...

I heard somewhere that Fergie's music was a part of the new Shrek movie and that's probably why she performed... I have to say that as much as it irritated me to have Sanjaya hanging in there I have to say that for a 17 year old he handled himself in a very mature manner.. he was always smiling and good natured about the whole thing.. and could handle critism with grace where a lot of the older contestants either talked back to the judges or started to cry when they were critised.. so my hat goes off to him and I hope he does well... Hiya-- I've been lurking this whole season, just have had trouble leaving comments... this one here is partly a test, because I just updated my Blogger account through Google, I so hope it works now! I've been greatly enjoying your blog Jennifer!

There is one Idol and one Idol only for me this season: Blake Lewis. Even if he's flat (or sharp?)on a third of his notes. The other two thirds of his notes, and everything else about him are awesome... I feel like such a 13-year-old girl.

Sanbyeya!

But you're right Jennifer; it wasn't his fault that he found himself in the position he was in. I suspect he'll be a much better/stronger performer in a few years. He *does* have a nice voice...it's just not ready for this competition.

As for my favorites on Country night:

Melinda
Jordin
Phil
Blake
LaKisha
Chris

It will be interesting to see what happens this week! What's the theme?
