holy crap, I like this show again...

Almost halfway home tonight as the last seven compete to become part of the final six. Ryan has still not shaved as he tells us we can't boo if we don't vote.

Ryan, I can boo whenever I want.

Then we get to see a retrospective of Rod Stewart, "the ultimate entertainer" as he leaps and jumps and drops and spins through the rock songs of thirty years ago. And to think Simon thinks Taylor's antics are silly.

This was, without question, the best overall show of the finals, with only one really poor performance and six really great ones.

Nonetheless, it's time for the kids to take the time machine back to the pop standards and it's time for my early impressions, subject to rewind, review and revision and, as always, from worst to first.

Pickler does something that I don't recall any other Idol contestant ever doing. She judges her own performance of Bewitched, Bothered and Bewildered before Randy ever gets to say a word. "I butchered it," she says. Well, butchered would be too many B's in that whole performance, but it certainly wasn't good (and Simon nailed it when he bluntly stated that the song itself is boring - God, that's six B's now). And on a night when only Ace and Katharine remain and everyone has scored high, even a single missed note is a broadcast. (7 B's.) But she had nice shoes, and when all else fails...

Somebody snuck in, stole Ace and replaced him with a ponytailed Ryan Seacrest. He certainly gets points for dressing the part. But, even though I found his That's All a big draggy and boring, I'm giving him credit for giving his best performance, one that Simon dubs "charming", since Father Figure.

Elliott's choice of It Had to Be You is roundly applauded and nobody argues the quality of the vocal performance. Simon, however, does express concern over the performance, questioning where Elliott left his personality. As much as I hate it, Simon was somewhat right, but it's nothing that hasn't plagued Elliott all season, even though this probably was his most relaxed outing.

Paris chooses These Foolish Things and goes for the conservative, pretty look and spellbinds the audience with a pitch-perfect performance that Randy calls her best ever. Can't argue with that. It was, without question, her moment.

Chris kicks off the show in the perfect outfit singing the perfect song. I am so glad those spoilers were wrong. What a Wonderful World, sung strictly to the original was wonderful. It was splendid. It made me remember why I loved him in the beginning of this contest. The judges love it.

Okay, full disclosure, You Send Me is my favorite song of all of the available numbers, and I got giddy realizing that Taylor was going to perform it. After assuring everyone that he found the SNL parody as funny as the rest of us did, he starts the song according to plan but finishes the song with a fabulous flourish that Simon calls magic.

Katharine picks the exact right song in Someone to Watch Over Me, and does exactly what most expected of her. Stewart says she was born to sing the standards. No truer sentence has ever been spoken on this show. She is elegant, even with a bit too much Ace camera flirting, she is wonderful. Simon gets a bit hyperbolic with his assessment that she makes the others look like amateurs, but she is the best of a great night.

So those are mine. What are yours?

For the first time...I totally agree with your run down! I feel most badly for Elliott but hope he gets another chance....please let Ace or Pickler free! -Jenna

Jennifer, I agree with you about everyone except Taylor. I wish Taylor and Elliot had switched songs.
But... for the first time since the eyeball stage, I really enjoyed Chris and Katharine.
It's well documented that I love Ace, but he'll go home either this week or next week.

Bottom 3: Kellie, Ace, Elliot
Who should: Kellie
Who will: Ace or Elliot

My fear is that Elliot will go home. I adore him, but he doesn't seem to have the fan base he should and I doubt he picked up many of Bucky's fans.

I think Elliott may have picked up a bunch of Bucky voters, or at least ones that aren't boycotting out of sadness.

I'm still feeling shocker coming on. And I know it's not going to be Taylor or Pickler. So that pretty much leaves everybody else.

I only saw the last three tonight because of other committments. Sorry, but Kat was spectacular. I would rather have her perfectly timed camera flirting than Pickles lost is space look any day. Anytime Pickles just stands still and sings, she's in trouble.

Oh yeah, I suspect Taylor may have benefited most from Bucky's demise. His personality and Southern roots are more apt to attract Bucky's fans than fAce's "Surf's up dudes" Cali background or Elliot's Richmond Va. boyhood.

I can't believe Bucky voters would go for Ace or for the women. So I think most of them will split between Elliott and Taylor with a few to Chris.

Hopefully, Kellie will be clicking those shoes together and saying to herself, "There's no place like home . . . There's no place like home . . . There's no place like home . . ."

I thought this show was boring, boring, boring.

The standards are well and good, but didn't we just hear them a couple of weeks ago? We need good themes; if not Screw Your Buddy Nightâ„¢, then Weird Al or something like that.

Everyone--except Kellie--was good but no one was great. Even the very good performances by VCM and Sergeant Hooks were yawners.

This show needs to get back to some good old rock n' roll, not sleepy songs being revived by has-been performers who are selling a CD.

I must disagree with the "personality" comment regarding Elliott.
I saw more tonight than when he sang IDWB.
What else can he do?
Strip?
Let's cut him some slack.

I think the Bucky voters are going with the show's other redneck, ABM.

I look for Fox to pull the "George" stunt tomorrow night, probably on Elliott or Kellie (but only Kellie is dumb enough to fall for it).

Did you guys know? Katharine learned the eye-boink from Constantine when they were in school together.

Well, there are plenty of opportunities out there for good time rock and roll theme nights.
Eagles, Steve Miller Band, Creedance Clearwater Revival, Bob Seeger, Bruce Springsteen all have enough songs to supply a theme night. There's always the Beatles and Stones.

Not the Beatles: they refuse release. I can live with CCR. But I still want Screw Your Buddy™.

If Kellie was a horse, I'd shoot her and put her out of her misery. Pitchy? She hit more bad notes than good notes. But America votes and will the red states let their heroine go???????????Not if the GOP (Good ole Pickler) fans can wear their little fingers thin. They actually BUY the naive act she puts on....but then again, they all probably voted for Dubya...

My thoughts:

Chris - Best performance I've seen by him yet - I was not blown away but I did really enjoy it, great outfit and everything.

Paris - Probably my least favorite Idol but by far, for me, the best vocalist of the night - she was just awesome. The only coherent thought Paula had all night - she could easily sell an album in that style.

Taylor - Not his best performance, but still really enjoyable - the ending was great and he just always looks like he is having the best time. It's kind of amazing to see the transformation the stylists make on him from mid-week to performance night.

Elliot - I honestly do not know what in the world Simon was talking about. This was Elliot's most relaxed performance all season and it came across to me like he was having a grand old time and the song choice was great. My 2nd favorite performance of the night.

Kellie - Eeeeesh. Well... I didn't think it was quite as bad as the judges did, but... Yikes. She looked nice and I actually wasn't too annoyed by her shoe comment (I thought Paris' banter was much more annoying) but vocally pretty bad and stage presence: F- . The girl didn't even move her arms. It was almost weird.

Ace - He looked nice and sang well but I thought the arrangement of the song was A-W-F-U-L. I have no idea if that's how the original goes, I've only heard the version sung by Adam Sandler in the Wedding Singer, but YUCK YUCK YUCK. I was surprised the judges liked it so much.

Katharine - I seriously must be seeing/hearing something different than the judges are every week. Yes, the singing was great - NO, it was NOT far and above anyone else. But seriously, I can't see how I am differing from everyone's opinion of her every week. I think my ears just don't hear her right.

I will be dialing Elliot until my fingers bleed tonight.

Botton 3: Kellie, Ace, Elliot

Should: Kellie or Ace

Will: Elliot

Wow! These comments are turning political! Ok, my comments in W2F order:

I do believe that Kellie was horrible tonight, but that's not going to stop her voters. She'll be safe tomorrow.

I actually thought that Paris stunk too. Her song put me to sleep and thats pretty bad considering I'm a Billie Holiday fan. She sounds more and more like Fantasia and with that I want to RIP HER VOCAL CHORDS OUT!

Ace wasn't that bad but I think he's going to be the one to say goodbye to. At least if that happens, it's not a horrible song to hear again.

Taylor was a little boring at first, which made me wonder if You Send Me had any other lyrics to it. Then his bridge into the end came, and I was like, Ok that's the Taylor I like.

Chris did a great job! His scratchy voice even played a huge part in the song just like Louie's. I still don't think he's as good as everyone says. He's starting to lose my interest. (Still want to rub his bald head though!)

Elliott had awesome vocals tonight, as always! I disagree with Simon's comments, but maybe that was an example of reverse psychology. He's done it before, and hopefully that will save Elliott this week. I think he is great and the perfect underdog for the finale!

Katharine is the best, and I've said that from the very beginning. She deserved the hot spot tonight because this is HER style and she made it known to everyone. (not like Paris who ruined the hot spot last week) For the people who think she is a bit arrogant, watch tonight's show over again. She is so grateful of the judges' comments. I want her to win and I'm not going to deny it!

Elliot was wonderful tonight, Chris wasn't very good at this genre, Paris was excellent as usual but no personality. Katharine is the same - perfect singer but nothing that really stands out to me. Kellie was right about her performance. Taylor did an excellent job and Ace was better in practice.
I think Kellie, Ace and Chris (as a shocker) will be in the bottom 3 tomorrow night. And if I had my way, Kellie would go home...but I think it's Ace's turn.

I don't think Pickler will find her way into the bottom for awhile, certainly not tomorrow, but I think Chris most certainly may find himself there. But then I said that last week...

Ace is gone. About two weeks too late.

LOL Frances. Dave came up with the idea of drawing names and having each of the kids choose songs for another of the kids. So the big question would be will they give their opponent a terrible song so they'll bomb or give them an easy song so that people will love how nice they are.

I think it's a brilliant idea. ;o)

Can you put your bottom three in your main post? Not all blog readers can pick up comments.

Erik's bottom three: Chris, Kellie, Ace.

Erik's pick to go home: Ace.

(ErikJHeels.com is 5/6 in picking the bottom six over the past two weeks.)

I [heart] Elliott. I dialed to show the love and pleasantly got many a busy tone! Crossing fingers. It stinks when everyone does well and someone has to go. Truth is everyone didn't do well and the one who didn't will certainly get to stay. Oh well. I hope Elliott gets another shot.

I thought Chris did a fabulous job. I actually got teary on a song I really like for the first time ever....I liked Elliott's performance and thought he looked like he was enjoying himself, at least at the beginning. Kellie was just sad with her look on her face and comments about herself. I think Ace will bite the dust tomorrow night.

I'm not sure who else is going to be in the bottom three besides Ace - but I'll be shocked if he's not the one going home. Pickler was definitely the worst, but her fan base is not going to let her down.

For the people who were wondering where Bucky's votes were going to go - I think many of them will go to Elliott. Bucky said in an exit interview that his best bud on the show was Elliott and he was really going to miss him.

Worst 2 First:

Kellie - I picked this song for her and I'm so sorry I did. I've never been a big fan of hers but tonight she sealed the deal for me. That was an awful performance. And I think Simon used a bit more of the RevPsy method with her. Tell America it wasn't that bad and maybe they'll relax and feel secure and not feel the need to rescue her with a kajillion votes.

Ace - Loved the suit, hated the hair. Didn't much care for the vocals, either. He started out ok but went downhill very fast. Two thumbs down.

Taylor - I was just about to fall asleep, and then BAM! he got to the middle of the song and just took off! What a great way to finish this song!

Chris - ahhhhhh...I love it when he just showcases his voice! Does anyone else hear the resemblance between him and Jim Croce? He's my hands-down favorite in this competition. Loved him on this song! (I could do without the short sleeves and vest, though.)

Elliot - I think Simon was using reverse psychology. Tell people he wasn't very good so people will vote for him. I think Simon knows Elliot did a fantastic job! He showed personality and, as always, had stellar vocals. I did my bit and dialed til my fingers fell off. Seriously. I'm typing with my toes right now.

Katherine - She was fantastic, as usual. This music, and that song in particular, suit her to a T. But I think Paris was actually better tonight. Kat had a couple strained notes here and there, but masked over them well. She should be safe.

Paris - I thought she was amazing! This is definitely her type of music, and she didn't disappoint. Two thumbs up and a big toe!

Who I want: Kellie, Ace, Kellie
Who should: Kellie, Ace, Taylor
Who will: Elliot, Ace, Chris

Going home: Ace

I was actually very surprised about the night. I wasn't expecting a whole lot, but it was great!

I too was very proud of Chris for pulling it off. I thought his voice sounded very nice.

Purplvr is so right about Pickler and the "I'm sorry". It's getting to be a bit much. I also can't stand the way Paris says thank you, and how often in the same annoying tone. Gah.

Though Ace is my pick to leave just like everyone else, I could help but feel a little proud of him last night too. I thought he did a decent job, much better than past weeks.

It's really hard to say who's leaving tonight. I hate to say it, but my gut tells me Elliot, even though Ace would be the obvious choice.

Let's face it - Elliott is a bit awkward, but I still feel as though he was having fun last night and did a great job vocally. That is why I dialed incessantly on his behalf.

Ace WAS a hit man!! How funny. He or Kellie should go.

I loved Katharine and thought she was flawless. Though in a committed heterosexual relationship with a man, I am buying into the camera-flirting! She is hot.

Paris who usually bugs me, did wonderfully! That was her genre.

Loved Chris and Taylor, too. I can almost see Taylor winning.
