beelzebub has a devil put aside for me...

The corn is popped. The adult beverages are on ice. The aspirin bottle has been dechildfied and the mantra to the rock gods have been chanted. Freddie Mercury, please forgive them for what they're gonna do.

Coming to you LIVE from Hollywood, it's a trainwreck! And I hope Paula's brought enough drugs for the entire class.

Okay, the expectation is a disaster of epic Idol proportions, and, considering what this group of Idols has given us thus far, it's not an unreasonable suspicion. How sad it is when a group of people get literally giddy over the prospect of carnage. But dang, it's better than the mediocre sap we've endured over the last few weeks.

So it wasn't the trainwreck I was fearing or hoping for, but it certainly won't qualify as one of the best episodes ever either. But then, I fear this season won't even come close to qualifying as the least boring.

Long live the Queen.

Here they are, my early impressions, subject to rewind and revision and, as always, from worst to first:

Ace is told during rehearsals with Queen that Brian May just "can't do that - not to his own song." Brian probably wishes Ace hadn't done that to We Will Rock You either. When he doesn't forget the words he forgets the key. Oh Ace. I wish you hadn't done that too. The judges wish you hadn't done that either. Ace, your cute brother wishes you hadn't done that. Ace, honey, it may just be time to fold 'em.

Pickler decides to try arguably the most popular song ever, complete with leather rocker chick look. She does the Pickler bump and grind and finishes it off with the Pickler knee drop and Pickler wink, leaving me pretty much unaffected. The judges tell her she made it work, in the typical Pickler pimp. I give it a Pickler Bohemian Rhapsody whatever.

Katharine explains that she did a last-minute switcheroo once Mandisa got the ax and performs Who Wants to Live Forever. She gets all backlighted with a great smoky atmosphere and, despite some really bad notes and some irritating screeching, does a decent job with the ballad.

Chris gets all the strobe bells and whistles yet again, singing the "obscure" Innuendo, not covered, that we know of, by Live, Creed or anyone else but Queen. He sounds pretty much like Chris, nothing terribly distinctive or unique or mind-altering, but Randy and Paula drool. Simon again uses the indulgent word and chastises him for cheating the audience out of "a moment." Me? Hell, even I can yell a song and call it a song.

Bucky's in the lead-off position after anchoring last time and doesn't let me down with Fat Bottomed Girls. It's probably the first time I've seen him actually look like he's having a great time. Randy and Paula say yea. Simon says mediocre. Simon, I've heard mediocre. This was better than that.

Taylor is back! Despite a missed mic stand kick, he spazzes all over the stage, all over the catwalk and all over hearts everywhere with Crazy Little Thing Called Love. Randy is relieved the real Taylor has been returned unharmed. Paula calls him fresh air and Simon asks if he's drunk.

Elliott admittedly performs the most difficult of the songs with Somebody to Love, and despite that lingering stiffness, some missed notes and a totally shortchanged ending, helps save the tailend of this performance episode.

Paris takes on the emotional The Show Must Go On, the song recorded and written in the months preceding Freddie's death. She takes a strident and somewhat angry approach to the song, but performs it nicely, with enough maturity to bely her youth. The judges are mixed. I'm impressed, probably for the first time, with Paris.

Okay, those are mine. What are yours?

Gosh, I can't stand Pickler but I thought she was okay. Uh, Ace honey, Buh Bye! I thought it was 7 decent songs and 1 stand out awful song. -Jenna

OK...I think Elliot was the most entertaining of the group I saw. I missed the first two, but according to Jennifer, Ace may be singing again tomorrow night.
Pickles is Pickles. She is consistently good, not brilliant, and not a trainwreck. She is like the PGA golfer that never wins a tournament but always finishes in the top ten. At the end of the year, he's the leading money winner.
I can't help it, I am in love with a tall, drop-dead gorgeous brunette. Her outfit may have been the best yet for her. Did she sing? I must have missed that part. I was lost in those eyes.
Chris may be losing some support with that ever present angry white boy character. As Jennifer says, I can scream words and call it a song, hell, LimpBizkit does it all the time.
Taylor was Taylor, but not the best Taylor I have seen.
Paris may have been the best I have seen of her.
I guess the bar is closed, everybody out of the pool.

Bucky, Ace, Paris, would you come to the center of the stage for a minute. We would like to say goodbye to someone. So long Ace.

Later all,
JR (DrillerAA)

I was really expecting to cringe tonight, but all in all, it wasn't that bad. (Who in the heck thought covering Queen songs was a good idea anyway?)
I especially enjoyed Elliott, Taylor and Paris.
Ace?, Good Lord, man.
That was BAD.
REALLY BAD.

I'm just happy that Bucky has stopped playing hot potato with the microphone (or at least it's less noticable).

My thoughts in show order:

Bucky - I was very entertained. I thought he did a good job singing and a great job performing. He looked like he was having lots of fun and I was relieved to see his hair down but not having the "Jessica Simpson" look.

Ace - I was cringing at the pre-performance footage. I thought the performance was OK at best and the judges were just brutal. Ace had a BAD night.

Kellie - Who in the world were the judges watching?!?!? I thought she was completely awful, looks, singing, stage show, everything. Horribly bad. Oh my gosh, and she's never heard the term "On paper it looked..."??? Weird terminology??? GIVE ME A BREAK.

Chris - Very unimpressed. I agreed with Simon, he could have shined with a different song cos that performance was pretty dull. What was not dull and completely embarassing was when Paula attempted to speak after his performance. She couldn't finish even one of her 50 thoughts and for goodness sakes, was she trying to say that he did that song BETTER than Freddie Mercury could have??? She obviously robbed a pharmacy prior to the show.

Katharine - I can't make a judgment here because I didn't get to see it, but the 10 second recap to me looked bad and sounded bad. But really, the whole performance could have been great, so...

Elliot - Sang my favorite Queen song, so he had a lot to live up to in my mind. Now I wasn't looking for anyone to come close to Freddie Mercury, but Elliot gave it one heck of a good try and I thought he was just awesome... I will be speed dialing Elliot tonight.

Taylor - LOVED him. I love his crazy dancing and it was the absolute perfect song for him. AWESOME job.

Paris - I had the exact opposite thoughts as Randy - I thought she started out sounding really good and then the guitar kicked in and... I don't know, she just lost me.

So those are my thoughts.

Bottom 3:

Kellie, Ace, Bucky

Who should: KELLIE

Who will: Ace

My top three tonight: Paris, Taylor, and Taylor
My bottom three: Ace, Elliot (love him, but I just didn't get that) and Katherine (snore)

Kellie wasn't that bad. Chris' song was awful. Painful. Bad, bad choice. He lost me this week.
Bucky was okay and looked better than usual imho.

Please, bye-bye Ace!

Performances that make you go hmmm...

Ace, Katharine, Kellie, and Paris

Most entertaining performance of the night: Taylor (makes me want to stand up and cheer)

Most boring performance: Katharine (what was with all that stretching and screaming - it was painful to watch). She is trying to stick with her trump card, which is her amazing voice, but it is all getting a little snoring to me.

Yeah, what is up with Chris wearing makeup. I think Ryan was like, "dude, get your hands off me, you are wearing more eye makeup than my new girlfriend Terri "I am going to die of starvation" Hatcher." Get back!!

I have been so anti Pickler but tonight I thought she gave a surprising performance, much better than I could have hoped for. I thought Elliott really stepped up to the plate and made a respectable showing, as did Paris. I was so disappointed in Chris' choice. I expected him to steal the show tonight. I think Ace will be the one to leave.

Worst to first:

Ace - Take your cue from Brian May: if he says, "I can't do that to my song," then you shouldn't either. Buh bye.

Kellie - She exceeded my expectations for this song. But as my expectations were lower than Britney Spears' pants waistline, that's not saying much. See you in the bottom 3.

Kat - It was "almost a moment." Operative word: almost. I've not heard a wrong note out of her this entire competition until tonight. What happened? I think she oversang it in parts.

Bucky - He really did look like he was having fun up there! And the song actually worked for him. WTG Bucky!

Taylor - Great decision to change from "We Are the Champions" to "Crazy Little Thing Called Love." Very entertaining! Well done.

Chris - What can I say? I just dig this guy! It wasn't the best performance of the night, nor was it his best performance of the season. But I still liked it. He's just got a quality. Plus, you can't argue with the professional opinions of 2 Queen members.

Elliot - Loved it! Yes, there were a few pitchy bobbles in the middle of the song, but overall he did a great job. He seemed relaxed to me and looked like he was having a good time up there.

Paris - Knock me over with a feather! She's always been somewhere in the upper middle of the group for me. Ballads are not her thing, but she's brilliant at the faster jazz/soul numbers. Tonight, she was brilliant as angry rocker chick. Perfect costume, great interpretation of the song, and a funky almost-Beyonce like vibe going on. Two thumbs up and a big toe!

wow, way to much personal vehemance, and lack of objectivity :)

My wife and I agreed completely on who was good and bad, and then we polled our 7 yr old who watched the whole show for the first time, and isn't tainted by any concept of what the show is.

Ace - terrible. His stage presence was a lot better than normal, he stayed away from his Crucifiction pose thankfully, but his vocals we absolutely bland, uninspired, and simply put, boring. If I paid to hear that, I want a refund.

Chris - sorry man, I really thought you were destined for the finals, but each week he shows he is a one trick pony. Those who commented too much yelling, yup, completely agree. Simon was dead right, too indulgent. STUPID song choice, do NOT pick a song the audience doesn't know, we aren't watching to "learn" new songs, we are wanting to recall loved songs from our youth! :) If chris goes down tonight, I wouldn't be surprised other than I would have thought his fan base was big enough to prevent it for a few more weeks

The next few are really bunched up, well ahead of the previous 2
Elliot - only this low because, well, as some pointed out, he has a radio face :) I liked his version, but it wasn't a knock your socks off performance. I agree with the "stiff" comments about him. If he were to win, he'd be like a male Carrie, no moves. and I love Carrie's voice.

Bucky - awesome job for Bucky. Great song choice, fun fun fun stage performance. This is what AI is about, entertaning the audience, while singing a decent vocal if you don't have great pipes. The country boy who by all accounts is the least talented and rangy of those left, did a fantastic job. Can he win it all? Just can't see how right now. But if he continues to stretch and grow, could he be this year's Diana, and come out of nowhere? Based on what I keep reading here each week, I could see that happening. Most enjoyable song for me from the Buckster (I'm not a country fan, so while I liked his vocals, I don't "know" the songs, so had no connection, like Simon. Though I do get the genre unlike Simon)

Paris - good song, good outfit, showmanship etc. really nice vocally. Not sure if it was when in the show or something, but we just were't enthused by this song as some of the others. By no means bad, but I was lost in the song, like daydreaming rather than soaking in the song. It wasn't like the 2 bad guys, where I wanted to skip the song, it just wasn't like watching the return of Taylor.

The last 3 are a toss up. not sure I could rate them 1 to 3. Not even sure I would seperate the 1-5 group, but i have to list them here somehow :)
Taylor - my odds on favorite to win, if he keeps up his fun side like tonight. I absolutely loved his song choice, great move in not doing Champions (Chris's big mistake was in not picking it up). Very entertaining, while not being as spastic as other times. Vocally, I did notice he doesn't have the range or quality needed for this song, but he makes up for it by being entertaining. How can you not watch Taylor without a smile or grin on your face? He's such a fun guy. It's the entertainment business, and he entertains. I have a hard time not making him my #1, but his vocals weren't as good as the girls.

Kellie and Katherine - Both had wonderful looks and lighting for them. sorry ladies, you are against Kellie more because she gets the guys worked up. And probably, as with me in the beginning, there is a hint of concern she is too much like CU. I can't help but think that in the end she has NO CHANCE solely because she is so much like Carrie, though at least her stage presense is MUCH MUCH better than Carrie's. Katherine had the wrong look tonight, she was a glam girl not a rocker tonight, but damn she was SMOKIN'!!! And sorry, but vocally she was powerful and enjoyable. And for ONCE, a slow down Ballad was chosen at the right time. When the other 7 are ALL doing upbeat songs, it's ok to go powerful, slow, emotional. As a few weeks back, when everyone picks ballads or stand still songs, gag me. Someone needs a brain those weeks, and pick a fast beat, known party song where the audience will stand up and clap and dance. By being the 'one' unique person those weeks, you are memorable.

Also, didn't anyone else get the Heart vibe from Kellie? When the lights first hit her, I was immediately thinking Nancy Wilson (I think, can't remember which was the blond) of Heart from one of the old music videos. Decked out in black, long straight blond hair glowing in the lights, powerful rocker image. Great stage show, up there with Taylor and Bucky for entertainment value. Vocally able to carry off the sound better than Taylor. And Katherine could have only been better had they put the scene from Highlander where that song is used, in Scotland with the beautiful scenery, on the big screen to back her up. The wife and I love Highlander (though the sequels basically blow), and that song was easy for us to sink into and enjoy. It connected.

As for our dear little Amanda's votes, I played back the recaps at the end and asked her for her impressions.

Bucky got a thumbs up!
Kellie got a thumbs up and arm raised. she liked Kellie a lot
Ace got a thumbs down, blah (this from a 7 yr old who doesn't listen to pop music ever. She knows the wiggles, the doodlebops, and Christian praise/worship music. But she seems to understand bad vocals pretty well)
Chris got a well, he's ok, sort of liked it
Katherine she really liked as well. pretty
Taylor was her bomb performance. big thumbs up, most fun to watch
Elliot got a soso as well, but more liked than Chris. I guess he wasn't showy enough for her
Paris she liked as well, not quite the arm raised thumbs up, but she liked paris too.

who should be in the bottom 3, based on tonight and their history:
Ace, Chris, Bucky or Paris (some week performances and lack of following likely hurt these 2)

Who is likely:
Ace, Bucky, Elliot (unfair, but Chris likely has too strong a following, though it should be weakening with these cookie cutter performances he's been doing. and Bucky and Ell's seem to have a hard time with getting a following)

Gone:
if it ain't Ace, then it's a shocker of Mandisa proportions. I stil don't get how she got the boot last week. She was one of the, if not the, best vocalists. and with her weight trashing from Simon in auditions, I had figured she'd get a lot more support :( But ACE has earned the right to get booted. Buckt has earned the right to stay. Chris has earned getting booted as well, so he wouldn't not shock me, other than not living up to potential. Bucky gone would make me mad/sad, as he has grown more than probably any of the others over these weeks.

it'll be a fun night tonight,

JJ

I don't think that Ace was that bad. No, it wasn’t wonderful, but it wasn’t THAT bad. Bucky was great, and yeah, so when did he get hot? I don’t remember that happening. Katherine looked so beautiful and sounded horrible. I think that she should have gone before Mandisa. Paris was very good. The rest, eh. Taylor got my vote for the night. He kicked that song’s butt!

I was pleasantly surprised by "Idol" last night. I expected, as Jennifer said, "a trainwreck", but it wasn't nearly as bad as I feared.

I was also pleasantly surprised by Kellie. I've not always agreed with her song selections (or, okay, her vocals!), but I must admit, she did a decent job on "Bohemian Rhapsody." What could have been a disaster of epic proportions actually turned out to be rather enjoyable.

Speaking of which, for about an hour after the show, I couldn't get Bucky's rendition of "Fat Bottomed Girls" out of my head. I thought he did really well.

Other notes: I love Elliott, will always love Elliott. He could sing the Yellow Pages to me, and I wouldn't care. :-)

I was glad to see Taylor do a fun song again. I thought he made a great song choice; it fit him and his voice well.

If I had to pick, I would say Ace is the one going home tonight. I hate to say it. Ace is gorgeous, gorgeous, gorgeous, but that only takes you so far. I'm not sure he's made the best song choices lately, and that may have hurt him. I'll hate to see him go, but still...I guess we have to say goodbye to somebody, right?

Other predictions: The bottom three will be men tonight. I could be wrong, but you never know...

I think KELLIE, ACE and BUCKY had the worst vocals but I think ACE, BUCKY and PARIS will be in the bottom three. Bucky makes me ill, and since no one else is voting for the best vocals, Bucky should go home...he did the worst IMO and Kellie is untouchable...argh!
