what's your birthyear?...

The Idols are stretching back about as far as they are young to find the songs to sing tonight. Spoilers are in the entry below.

And they're confined to songs recorded in the year they were born.

This, as normal, is the open thread, so we can all criticize, comment, condemn or cry as the ten remaining kids try to redeem themselves from two weeks of Beatle mistreatment.

It's all yours. I will be back sometime tomorrow to offer my three cents.

But until then, have at it...

Best of the night: David C.

Worst of the night: Ramiele

I think Kristy Lee might actually avoid the bottom 3 tomorrow.

David C. rocked it! Loved him!!!

I've with you Dave, I think Kristy will avoid the bottom three as well. She sang a USA song and she has that rabbit's foot up her ass!

Ok, so I had a nice little comment about everyone's performances tonight and I clicked something and lost it all before I posted it. So instead of typing my thoughts all over again, I'll say my thoughts very briefly.

David Cook was the best tonight, followed closely behind by Michael Johns. Jason was the worst, I actually had to fast forward through it. Everyone else was pretty good in the middle, I even enjoyed Kristy tonight.

I'm guessing the bottom 3 tomorrow will be Jason, Chikezie, and Ramiele. I also agree that Kristy might have kept herself safe this week. I can't guess who's toast because I'm usually wrong. So, til tomorrow...

P.S. Kristi, what was the guess you got right?

WOW!!! David Cook ROCKED the house! (Not that I'm surprised...hehehe)

Gotta say, tonight was much better than last week. I didn't know quite a few of the songs, but it didn't matter. They all sang admirably (and stellarly, in a few cases). Anyway, here is my list...bottom to top.

Ramiele - If it hadn't been revealed, I'd never have known she was sick. She sounded much the same as she has for the past few weeks now. I think she may have sung her swan song.

Chikeze - This is one of the songs I didn't know. I really like his voice and his personality, but he seemed to warble a bit tonight. And there wasn't much personality in his performance. I expect to see him in the bottom 3.

Brooke - Like Simon and Randy said, it started out ok with just the piano. Then it got wierd for me. Still, I think she has a nice voice. I'm just not sure it's nice enough to win this whole thing.

Kristy - This was her best performance to date by a country mile. She proved that she's got the pipes. Now she's gotta string a few good performances together in a row to prove she's worthy. I'm not convinced.

Carly - I don't know what the heck Randy was talking about when he panned her for doing a rock turn on this song. THAT'S HOW THE SONG IS! She sounded so much like Bonnie Tyler that I could see her running down the hall in slow motion with all those white gauzy curtains billowing out at her...and all those guys with the wierd "bright" eyes staring. I thought this was a great song choice for Carly. But I hated the indulgent and unnecessary run at the very end. Too much of a good thing is a bad thing.

David A. - Another song I didn't recognize. I think Simon was a bit harsh. I actually rather liked this song on WeeArchuleta. No matter what he sings, he sounds fantastic. I really like this kid.

Syesha - I think this was her best performance to date. She was nearly flawless, sang with passion, and showed her strength without going overboard. I liked it a lot.

Jason - I don't care what any of them said...I loved this song on Jason. Sloppy guitar-work and all. His vocals, while as restrained and safe as ever, were darn near perfect. Two thumbs up...and a big toe!

Michael - FINALLY!! By far my favorite performance of his. That was a HUGE song to take on...and he did it spectacularly! I'd have given him the top spot if it hadn't been for....

David C. - HOLY COW!!! When they said, "Billie Jean," I was like, "Ummm...hmmm...I don't know..." Then he started. And he proved that a truly talented musician can sing ANYTHING! By the time he hit the middle of the song and the ROCK edge kicked in, I was practically on my feet. I was certainly pumping my fist in the air! He rocked it! ROCKED....IT!!! I can't wait til his cd comes out. It'll sit right here on the desk next to Daughtry's cd. :D

Who I want: Ramiele, Kristy, Brooke
Who should: Ramiele, Brooke, Chikeze
Who will: Ramiele, Chikeze, Carly

Going home? Ramiele.

At this point in the competition, it's tough to see anyone go. I like them all for different reasons. But I definitely have my favorite. And that would be David Cook. But I think David A. is going to win. Can't wait to find out!

Just a bit of FYI for those who have an interest in music composition and arranging:

"Billie Jean," as recorded by MJ, I believe has a time signature of 4/4 (4 quarter notes per measure). David C. changed it to 6/8 time (6 eighth notes per measure). Very tricky... very clever. And BOY! did it pay off huge dividends!

Incidentally David didn't change it. Chris Cornell arranged that particular version of BJ. Not very well known, but I have heard it and it does rock. David did a great job, but it wasn't his idea. Even Ryan when he announced it said "The Chris Cornell version of Billie Jean."

I just finished watching Brooke's video. I'm glad she didn't interrupt the judges as much. Next week, she should just stick to saying "thank u" and completely cut out the "really? you think?" interjections. It's annoying.

I think she's endearing but in a 40-year-old mom of three kids sort of way. She's the type of mom or aunt that everyone wish they had. That's fine if she was 40 and a mom of three kids :P

I just think that at 24, she's too young to be acting that way. That's just my opinion.

She has the talent but maybe not Idol material.

killer doula...

I stand corrected. Thank you for the info. I re-watched Ryan's comment and YUP! I completely missed it the first time around. I've never heard of Chris Cornell...but major props on a killer rendition of that song! Loved it!
