the first killings: a simulblog...
And of course that only means one thing: SIMULBLOG! I'm typing as I'm watching, so there's gonna be typos and illogical thinking, and if you're on the west coast and want to be surprised by the outcome, you might want to avoid this place for the next hour.
Because THIS is American Idol.
Ryan does his obligatory chatting, warning us that things are gonna get ugly. Then they pan to to the judges who say girl's gonna win, girl's gonna win! And they pay these judges for THAT commentary? Hell, hire me.
We then get told that this year's "helper stars" will include Tony Bennett, Diana Ross, Gwen Stefani, Barry Gibb and other assorted people. (Actually I thought this was supposed to start at 9 p.m., so it took me by surprise.)
Then, of course, we get the recap of the good, the bad and the ugly from the past two nights, because we must fill an hour to shoot four people, and let Fantasia sing and sell a whole hell of a lot of advertising.
YAY! Group song! They're sowing the seeds of love! And I'm not loving it, but it wouldn't be a group song if I did.
It's time for a break...
Chris is given the chance to assure America that he loves Simon. Awww. Something in me ain't buying his clarification. But anyway.
It's time for somebody to die.
----CAUTION: SPOILERS----
----Assassination #1----
Brandon is told he's safe. YAY!
Sundance is reminded that he sucked. But he's safe anyway. No comment.
Chris Richardson is safe too.
Nick does not look happy at all, and he's given a reprieve. YAY!
Blake and Paul stand there together, like nobody knows who's leaving.
Blake's told to take a seat and Paul gets kicked to the curb. (Hey! I predicted that!)
The judges tell him that he picked a crappy song. Well no kidding. Then they let him sing the crappy song all over again. This show is cruel.
-----End of Assasination #1----
The girls are brought to the stage and Ryan asks the same stupid question "how do you feel?"
Here we go.
----Assassination #2----
Jordin is reminded that she's great, and she's sent back to the couch.
Stephanie is reminded what she sang, and she's also sent back to her seat.
Sabrina gets the same treatment and sits back down.
Leslie is reminded that she was average and goes back to the safe area.
Melinda and Antonella stand there alone. Melinda is sent back to safety and Antonella is put through hell before being told she's okay too.
This show is cruel.
Ryan calls Amy to the stage and shoots her right between the eyes. Simon tells her she didn't "stand out." And she gets to sing again the song that got her killed and sounds as if she's gonna break down and cry any second.
----End of Assassination #2----
Season three winner Fantasia shows up, accompanied by Quincy Jones, to tell everybody she's going to star in Broadway's The Color Purple. That was about the worst-kept secret in the universe. And she sings one of the song from the show.
----Assassination #3----
The girls are back on the stage.
Haley is safe.
LaKisha looks concerned for her fate. Yeah right. She's sent back to the sofa.
Gina has tears but is told that America loves her. No more tears.
Nicole and Alaina are alone. Ryan gives both of them their reviews from last night and it's Nicole who gets the axe. (Hey! I called that one too!)
Nicole says she's had fun. Paula does the Paula thing, and Nicole, as is tradition, gets to sing again. It's just as bad as last time, but at least she's got the girls to help with backup this time.
----End of Assassination #3----
----Assassination #4----
Time for the guys.
Chris Sligh is told he's safe.
Phil is given a pass back to the sofa. And he's wearing a hat! Thanks for reading, Phil.
Jared is looking cute, and he's told to take a seat.
AJ is reminded of his reviews before being sent back to join Jared.
Sanjaya and Rudy are left alone. One is in the top four; the other is roadkill.
Rudy is roadkill. Sorry Rudy.
Simon gets all philosophical; Randy is Randy, and Paula tells him he basically didn't have enough time. Well, uhh...
And the four of them leave to, you guessed it,
----End of Assassination #4----
Rudy plans to go out with a bang. A bang. What an appropriate term for tonight's execution episode.
Next week 20 becomes 16. See you then.
Please, discuss.

I can't believe I have to freaking work while you're at home watching American Idol. Oh, the life of a graduate assistant . . .
I'm debating on whether I want to torture myself by reading your simulblog or if I want to try and save myself for when I get home and watch the whole thing on tape.
oh my gosh! I almost blew it for myself! I'm on the westcoast, and have been catching up on your blog over the past 1/2 hour. I just started reading your simulblog and nearly spoiled the surprise! Okay, I'm out for now..
Catch you later tonight!
did you notice how Ryan cut off Quicy Jones..????? ...
that should be Quincy Jones.. sheesh.. this laptop is crappy to type on but at least it's near the tv.. Fantasia was wonderful..
Did you hear Chris Daughtry's song "Home" is this year's theme song? How lucky for him! Perhaps it was good planning!
Thanks again Jennifer, you are so much fun!
I heard Daughtry's song "Home" and immediately got on the phone with a friend about it. I watched Daughtry perform "Home" on AOL Sessions earlier today. The "killings" shows are hard to watch...uggghh!
Did not think Fantasia was so hot, but I'm not a fan. At the end of a season usually all of the idols look so much better, like what happened. Somebody help that girl.

I missed the show tonight. I was at a Mandisa concert. That was great!!!
I can't argue with the picks, but I would tell Alaina and Antonella not to get to comfortable on the couch. They might want to check airline schedules for next week.
The guys have been so average, it's hard to tell who's on the bubble now.
I think there are going to be two or three girls who get robbed of a spot in the finals because of the forced gender-equity thing.
I, for one, would not be unhappy if the got rid of just about any six guys tonight because truthfully, none of them stand a chance of winning.
I'm with Dave. I don't think there are three, maybe four guys worhty of top 12 and none of them will be there by the final four.
Antonella looked ill for most of the show. Poor her. I bet that she improves for next week.
Fantasia needs to take better care of herself. -I fast-forwarded through her song.
Nicole was very gracious in losing.
Chris seemed to have regretted his comments to Simon as soon as he said them on Tuesday.
I wonder what happened to Quincy Jones. That was kind of comical when he got cut-off.
We'll never know whether or not Paul would carry his stupid gimmick into studio week two.
I wish Simon hadn't mentioned how awkward Leslie looks on stage. That's all I saw during the group song. (She has nice eyes though. . . I will try to focus on those.)
You really think Jared is attractive? Isn't he a little boring?
Hey Jennifer! 3 out of 4 predictions correct! Is your name really Jean Dixon? ;)
I can't believe Antonella didn't go home tonight. This is why I have a problem with top 24 being opened up to America's voting. Those people over at VFTW are screwing with my results!
It should have been Sundance rather than Paul and it should have been Antonella rather than Amy. Maybe next week America will get it right....
NAH!!
I love this show! (and your blog!)
Oh, and yes I noticed Daughtry's song at the end. YAY!!!! He's my boy!!
And I noticed Ryan cutting off Quincy. AND that Paul was wearing shoes. That was a short-lived gimmick.
Paul couldn't find the right note with a seeing-eye-dog and a metal detector the other night. He's gone and rightfully so. Any one of the "boy band" voices could have gone before Rudy. However, it still doesn't matter, the girls are still going to win it all this year.
I am disappointed but not surprised that looks bought two mediocre singers another week in the competition. Although I was not crazy about Nicole, I thought her voice was far better than Alaina’s. And judging by the reaction of Antonella, even she thought she wasn’t up to par. Oh well, America likes hot chicks… my husband is happy.
Perhaps I shouldn't be, but I am most shocked that Sanjaya was one of the top 4 boys (said by Ryan). I guess he has the “Hello Kitty” group vote.
Who are the top 4 boys?
If I was to guess, I would say:
Blake
Jared
Chris
Sanjaya (thanks to Ryan's tip off)
This can and will change next week, but who do you think is the top 4 boys from this past week?
I don't get why Simon said Leslie looked awkward on stage.. I'm not even sure what he meant. I always thought Fantasia looked very awkward and sort of clumsy and she made it all the way!! The thing about Leslie that struck me is she doesn't look like she'd have such a nice contralto voice.. her looks and her voice don't match. But I think she sounds great. I kind of liked Paul.. seems like a sweet guy and I'm sorry he's gone. Sundance really needs to improve big time and Chris is my fave of all the guys. I think Lakisha's voice is wowing everyone right now but I wonder if her appeal will hold up over time. Remember Mandisa??? My favorite woman is Melinda.. fantastic voice and I believe she can sing just about anything.
Ok, my two cents worth. Thanks for giving us this outlet. I used it last year toward the end and plan on being a regular this year. Is anyone a little nostalgic for last years' guys??? Chris, Taylor, Elliot.. even some of the guys who got cut early were better than most of the guys from this year.. sigh.. oh well!!
Well...actually I think Sundance is in that top four vote getters. He's the VFTW choice, and at this stage a concentrated vote effort can impact things greatly when votes are being split twelve ways from never. Plus DialIdol reflects it, and I'm going to give it the benefit of the doubt, even though it had a bug that prevented a lot of us from using it this week.
I think Antonella (the other VFTW choice) will squeak into the final six girls. The cookie-cutter girls will go out in no particular order (Haley, Leslie, Alaina) and then somebody's gonna get axed that really shouldn't.
And that's my guess thus far. And at this point with the guys, I not only miss Chris, Elliott and Taylor, but I miss Bucky and Ace too! (Not bad enough to miss Kevin, but give me time.)
Its hard to believe that Sundance is in the top four after Tuesday night, but Texas is a big state.
I think we are spoiled. Last year was really a great AI year! I miss them too. dk / Dori
Will they have Taylor or any of the others on the show before the final?
Overall, I wasn't terribly surprised with the results. I'd figured Rudy would go home, and that Amy would get the axe. Unlike some of the girls (like Antonella *cough, cough*), she didn't get much air time prior to this round. And sometimes that makes all the difference.
I think last night was probably a swift kick in the pants for a lot of them, particularly those who didn't sing so well. I hope they step it up a little next week, otherwise we're in for a very long season.
I think Sundance deserves another chance.
He looked so nervous and uncomforable performing on Tuesday, and he had such a hurt look on his face during the Judges critique. He knew he blew it.
Sundance has talent, not enough to get to the final six maybe, but if he can just get his nerves under control, I believe he can show the viewing audience what I heard from him at his first audition.
TCFKS's problem isn't is talent or his nerves.
It's his song choices. It seems that he peaked in the auditions becase ever since then, all we've seen him do is flame out. However, he's got the luxury of having been shown on TV a lot, so right now that's what's keeping him around.
Otherwise, he would have been Judded last night.
To "artificially intelligent":
Yes, I miss Chris and Elliot the most. :( This year's guys just aren't up to snuff, in my opinion.
Melinda is my favorite contestant this year. I'll be rooting for her all the way! She has the pipes AND she's humble. What a combo! I think she's adorable. :)
Dave, I totally agree with you. Sundance needs to start picking better songs, otherwise his days are numbered.
By the way, can someone please explain to me the "Judd" reference? I don't remember any contestants with that last name. The memory is definitely the first to go!
There are pictures on the internet of Antonella in some awkward half naked situations. Check them out here. http://www.dotspotter.com/news/60114_Antonella_Barba_Poll_What_do_YOU_think_about_the_sexy_picture_scandal
Some are saying she might get kicked off the show and I think she should. She is like one of those trashing Girls Gone Wild Girls that are setting a really bad example of girls these days. They all want to take they close off for the camera like it will buy them fame. They are just trash. She should be booted.
What do you think? I know if you are a guy you will enjoy these - she is hot but not a good role model for young girls.
Please excuse my horrible post above. I didn't check it for errors. I was so mad that I posted it as is. Sorry.
Idol has to know about those pictures. I wonder why she is still there. They are gross! If she goes do the replace her?
That's suppose to be do they replace her. daaaa
You don't suppose Antonella's BFF's leaked those photos because she's still on the show and they're both gone do you? That would never happen among BFF's. Seriously, I don't expect her to be around for the final 12 anyway.
Lakisha, Melinda, Sabrina, Stephanie, Jordin (if she doesn't mess up), and Gina are probably the top six girls. Haley or Leslie will be there if Jordin's age and inexperience trip her up.
It wouldn't surprise me if it was her BFF's, she was such a classy girl.
There is no way Antonella will end up in the final 12. Unless now she gets a bunch of guys voting for her who are hard of hearing. They kicked Frenchie off for something like this didn't they?
If she gets the axe do they replace her?
dk /Dori
You've seen the pictures, right?
Which American coed DOESN'T have pictures like that out there somewhere?
Those ones are REALLY tame. Let her continue!
Hows your hearing? dk / Dori
@chrisrocks:
Getting "Judded" is a reference to season four when on the first night of eliminations a contestant named Judd was whacked completely out of the blue.
As I remember they brought 6 of the guys out and told four of them were safe. Judd was then told to "have a seat." There was one guy left on the stage. He had the "dead man walking" look on his face as Ryan was running his yap and building "suspense."
Then Seacrest suddenly turns away from the guy in the middle of the stage and says, "Judd, you're going home."
Judd looked like his best buddy had just sucker punched him.
It was one of those stunts that only American Idol can get away with because we expect the show to be so cruel.
Notice that Seacrest never told Judd that he was safe; he was only told to have a seat on the couch. I think the drama of the show provides enough suspense and I think that this sort of stuff only shows how petty and controversy-driven the show is. When they resort to crap like this, I think either they're trying to get into the singers' heads or they're looking to have a laugh at someone else's expense.
I'll get off my soapbox now.
Ahhh...thank you, Dave. I vaguely remember the incident now. I do remember that they've blindsided a few contestants in the same manner over the years. I wish they wouldn't do it...it's so cruel.
And to chipperprime: I'm guessing if you did a search on Carrie Underwood, there would be no such pictures. Just because you're young, beautiful, and like to have fun doesn't mean you need to get tanked and strip for the cameras. The operative word in the title here is "Idol." I, for one, would NOT want someone of questionable talent and a malfunctioning moral compass to be lifted-up as an Idol for teens to emulate. Have we learned nothing from Britney Spears already?!
I say it's time to say goodbye to Antonella. *Stepping off of my soapbox, too*
