three minus one equals two: a simulblog...

Somebody's going home. Well, not exactly. He or she is gonna stick around for a week to practice Brady Bunch moves, but won't get to sing in competition next week on the real big stage. It's almost over, this very long season.

Because THIS is American Idol.

And this is a simulblog, live blogging the results show as it's unfolding, with publishing at every important stop, so if you live in the West and you want to wait to see it unfold yourself, you might want to do some shopping on QVC. But come back later!

Ryan sees Ace and Pickler in the audience. I like her new hair. Over 50 million votes, says Ryan, were cast last night, a new non-finale record. And, we're told, close doesn't even describe the difference between the kids.

The recaps pretty much look like they did live the evening before, and we're promised a look at the kids' homecomings.

After the break...

The kids are real old folks in the crappy Ford commercial, rapping to Young at Heart. And that's about all I'm gonna say about that.

Time for the home videos. First up: Taylor, who tells us he ate his way through Birmingham, including ribs and pancakes for breakfast. Birmingham knows how to treat it's Idols, considering its had enough practice with Ruben and Bo before him.

Taylor then takes the stage with Takin' It To the Streets, his track from the new compilation CD that we are going to shamelessly promote for the next week. And he gets backup dance help from Elliott and Katharine.

It's time to watch Katharine's 10-minute limo ride home, which even she admits isn't quite the festival event of the small towns. She gets to ride in a helicopter, though, and her high school crowd is small but mighty loud.

And she takes the stage and strips her shoes off to Think, her CD track. What is it with this girl and wardrobe issues? She's looking a lot happier in this show than at this time last week.

Hey! Todd Bridges is in the audience. Let this be a lesson to the kids: when your time in the spotlight is over, you too can be on Skating with Celebrities.

Hey! Gavin Degraw is in the audience too!

Time for Elliott's visit home. He says he felt like a king. Oh how sweet. He visited the pharmacy where he used to work. And he's riding in the biggest freakin' limo I've ever seen. And it's always good to see Mama Yamin. Even when she's overcome with tears.

Elliott's crying as the footage ends, Paula's crying (again) and now he has to sing Moody's Mood for Love.

Ahh. The pimping of the CD begins with a reminder of all of the music and kudos the former Idolites have accomplished with the help of Clive Davis, the guy who can't pick songs for crap. But they give him a big-ass plaque to acknowledge all the cool stuff. He invokes the holy name of Kelly and reminds us that she's a big star. He then goes through the litany of names and their good things. This could take awhile. He doesn't talk fast. Good heavens, this is like a meeting of the stockholders.

Results coming up. After the break.

Ryan gives us the breakdown of the votes on a big screen. They are separated by tenths of percentage points. The highest is 33.68, followed by 33.26 and 33.06. And there's a name behind the last one, the one who's outta here.

And it's Elliott. He gets to see the footage of his journey, he gets to acknowledge his mom and they give him the stage for the full length of his swan song.

Thanks Elliott. For making me very happy these past months.

And good luck.

Jennifer, I want you to know that I'm a big chicken. I'm so afraid that I'll see Elliot leave that I'm not watching the show. I'm refreshing your blog every 10 minutes so I can keep up, but I absolutely cannot watch.

I'm hoping that you'll update that VCM is on the stage throwing a hissy fit because she's going home. That would give me sweet dreams and I would gladly watch my DVR recorded episode of Idol.

WOW!!

While not a shocker, those %'s were so close, amazing! I was almost expecting Taylor to end up as the one going home. what an amazing result!! I do feel bad for Elliot, but I'd have felt bad for any of them, they have all been so good this season. And to think it's all but over now :( Next week will almost be anticlimatic since that will be it. I'll miss this Tuesday/Wednesday trek, it's been a blast!!

I've been reading your blog all season, and this is the first time I've been compelled to post. I am SO mad that Elliot has been cut. Katherine shouldn't have even been on the show this week. Her performances last week were terrible. Her arrogance each week makes me sick to my stomach. My votes will be going to Taylor next week.

oh, since Jen didn't post the numbers, I was expecting her to.

33.68% = 16,840,000
33.26% = 16,630,000
33.06% = 16,530,000

WOW! only 100,000 votes out of 50Million make the difference!! and Only 310,000 from being #1!!! WOWOWOWOWOOW!!!

oh, and considering how evenly many of you are on Taylor and Elliot, I would imagine Taylor will get 75% or more of Elliot's votes next week, and it won't even be close. I'm not sure Kat could win next week even if Taylor didn't show up for some reason or went horse and couldn't sing.

Very sad, but considering I was afraid he wouldn't even make the 12, I'm so proud of America for seeing his beauty. Total class act. And when all the people who don't like his music still say they like him, that's more important, to me, than any recording contract.

I'm very sad, but very proud of his accomplishment.

I hate to sound like the dumba** that I am, but what does VCM stand for in relation to Kat's Mom? Print it, if it's printable, please.

Though I haven't been an Elliott fan, that footage in Richmond...all those folks supporting him...brought tears to my eyes. What an amazing outpouring of love for an obviously well-loved gentleman. Well done, Elliott.

Not a dumb question - it's an inside joke, I guess. Our friend Dave likes to give nicknames to them all. VCM stands for Vocal Coach Mom and it's Katharine. We need a glossary around here. :D

From the blogs I've been reading, most of Elliot's votes will go to Taylor, but the problem is that all you get now are busy signals. Getting all those votes is worthless if they can't get through. They need more phone lines and bigger phone pipes. Otherwise, Kat will get 10 lives and take it next week...

The show wants Kat to win, and the votes are close. I'll vote Taylor, because I loved Taylor before I "met" Elliott. (I even have a Soul Patrol tee!) But I would suspect most people who love Elliott's music will gravitate toward Taylor.

Jennifer, I have a suggestion.

I know that after a contestant is eliminated, you change their color photo to black and white.

Since we're all mourning Elliot, can you so something different with his photo? Perhaps sepia or some other tint color. Just something to distinguish him from the others who've been eliminated because Elliot... well, he's Elliot and he is in a class above the other contestants.

Really, who CARES who wins now? I wouldn't waste my dime voting for anyone else. Taylor and Kat are both very good, either one can win, I don't care.

Elliott will do great big things with his career. It may work to his advantage (as with Chris) that he isn't handcuffed by an American Idol win. His career will be great and it will be all about HIM, not about the AI title.

He handled his departure beautifully and the AI producers handled it beautifully as well. What a wonderful sendoff.

Frances, I took your advice, and took it one step further. Hope you like.

Now I need little one liners for all of them. Suggestions, please!

Elliott is FAR better off away from the clutches of Clive Davis who ties them up, forces them to record a crap CD that doesn't sell, but won't let them free to pursue other labels.

I want Elliott to find a small label which cares about his music and gives him good stuff with which to work. It's disappointing not to see him sing with Taylor next week, but for him it's the better deal.

Even though I predicted a Taylor vs. Kat finale a couple of weeks ago, I am sad to see Elliot out of the competition. However, the numbers reflect how talented he really is. He lost by less that .5 precentage point to the leader and .2 percentage point to No. 2. I too wish him well, and after listening to his music tonight I can honestly say I might buy his CD. That is something I have never said or done before. I really don't think we've seen the last of Elliot Yamin. You just may have to look in the R&B, Easy Listening, or Soft Jazz section of Barnes and Noble to find him.

Have no fear Elliott fans, he WILL make a record. He's been around big dogs in the music business and he'll make a record as will Chris. You don't have to win this thing to be successful...look at Clay.

There was so much talent this season & we may see several records come out of this bunch.

I think Taylor is the Idol for this season. He's an amazing performer and if they actually take a little time and pick the right songs, he could have an awesome record. Seems like they always rush it with these things. I'm anxious to see what happens.

Kat is still an amazing singer, she just needs to figure out her niche. With Taylor, Elliott & Chris, you know exactly what to expect when they come out, they know who they are...I'm not sure she's there yet. Maybe it's because they're a smidge older. And I do agree that she tends to over sing things at times. Still an amazing singer but the over singing comes from VCM.

Anyway...don't be too sad...the voting was so freaking close...it could have been any of them. Dry your tears...Elliott WILL make a record!

Go Soul Patrol!

As i watched the show tonight, i had come to accept that elliott just may be the one to go home. And, also as i watched i can to accept the fact that to me....elliott is the winner of this years american idol. This quiet, sweet, and emotional man has shown me that the average joe, does get his day to shine. More so than any other contestant standing on that stage, elliott has given us a page in his life. He changed, yet stayed the same more than any other idol. Not only is it his vocal talent, cuteness, and manners, it's his heart. He has shown more heart on that stage than any that i've seen. To me...elliott won american idol tonight...he is a wonderful human being. god bless him and every one of you who he has touched to vote for him. i have and will continue to be...an elliott yamin fan! ty, jami

Jami - your post almost made me cry again.

I can't believe that I was crying when I watched the finale! I don't do stuff like that! But I did tonight, I was so sad to see Elliot go. When they revealed his name, I threw a little temper tantrum. LoL... And then came the stupid tears. How can I be this emotional over AI??

Elliot was just such a sweetheart, and watching that video of his visit home made it all that much harder to see him go.

My votes will most definitely go to Taylor next week.

I am sickened by the way Katharine reacted to Elliot going home. I mean, I know she is psyched to stay, but for goodness sakes, she was so giddy she may as well have started doing cartwheels all over the stage.

At least Taylor showed some class for his friend. Right at first he really looked pretty upset.

Anyway, I'm not looking forward to the finale as much as if it was Elliot/Taylor, but I still want to watch to see Taylor take it all.

If Katharine wins... then please, oh please, someone shoot me if I dare to watch again next year. Not that she's bad, she really is a great singer, no argument there. I'm just tired people I don't want winning. It happens every year!! Let's hope that's a trend that will be broken...

Jami, Wonderfull post, couldn't agree more. Elliott is the type of person that you'd want for your friend because he would always be there for you. He seems like a truly caring, loveable person. I know he'll do great things in the future, I hope his CD comes out soon, can't wait to hear it. I just wish we could hear him another week. Kat should never made it to the finals, she had so many off weeks it was like waiting to hear what disaster was going to be next. Good Luck Elliott!!

Jennifer, thank you for dignifying Elliot and all he's come to mean to so many people by treating his picture specially. I love the sepia tone and subtitle; it's perfect for this very special young man. I vote for *not* giving subtitles to any of the other contestants because nobody, thusfar, has touched America quite the way Elliot has. He's a tremendous human being and a very talented vocalist.

I was upset to the point of being speechless when the results were announced. I didn't cry; I just left the room without saying a word. Now that I've read all these posts and seen Elliot's retirement picture, I'm crying as though I've lost a close friend. It's silly, really...but I've just grown to love this guy so much. He's matured as a performer far more than anyone else in this competition. He took his mother's belief in him and just soared! And he proved himself to be a down-to-earth gentleman in the process. A true class act.

I will miss him tremendously. I'll be voting for Taylor next week, though my heart is no longer in this. I hope for great things for Elliot. I think he's very special. I'll be looking for him on CD in the future.

I think the viriol being displayed by some of the Elliot fans towards Katharine is a little misguided. We tend to forget that she's only 21 and certainly not a seasoned veteran when it comes to her public persona. Anyone of these kids that win is going to deserve it. Once it gets down to the final 6 or so you invest so much emotion in your favs that it's bound to be disappointing to see them go. Who doubts that Kellie or Paris or Chris or Elliot don't have a bright future? They all do and, given the right song at the right time, had a shot.

6:52 AM, May 18, 2006

That analogy is spot on. So if one decides that the energy (rather than the volume) of voting attempts is equal (energy being the pouring of the water as opposed to the volume of water in the reservoir being poured) it's a crap shoot. Obviously then, the difference comes down to texting, because with every text vote being counted within the time frame, sheer numbers of voters plus energy becomes key.

I've read all the post and have to resond to the one about Elliot fans being a little harsh towards Kat. Well that is showbiz and everyone who tries to be on AI by now should be prepared for what goes along with being on tv. Gossip, opinions, rumours, critism.......EVEN IF YOU ARE ONLY 14YRS OLD MUCH LESS 18 or whatever. I'm not even an Elliot voter. I loved Chris and then Taylor but Elliot was my next pick and I think he will be surprising us in the future because after this episode he showed star quality CLASS!!! He will go far. I have not commented but one time ever before this because I don't like bashing any of them. But I have watched this show forever and I have never seen someone act the way Kat has no matter what her age is. I have tried to like her and after this she needs some lessons on class. Her looks will not help without improving her obvious whining poor me on tv. The last few episodes that is all u hear about is how unfair she has been treated. What a poor way to try to win. Everytime she received a negative comment she has to look at her family like she wants to stomp her feet and have a temper tantrum. She can not take nor handle being told anything negative and it is too obvious by her words and actions. Well she better not continue in this business because she will fall apart. She sings a song and automatically thinks it was perfect and when told by the judges anything to her dislike she becomes very dislikable. Every statement she made and her entire persona was disturbing. I think people will vote for Taylor even if they don't care that much because of the way Kat acted tonight. I was very disappoonted in her. I really have not remarked about anyone ever on any site in a negative manner even after my major disappointment of Chris losing to Kat who messed up on a few lines. I did not see Kellie Pickler whine about being treated unfairly and accepted graciously what the judges dished out to her. At first I was almost falling for the poor Kat receiving no attention when Kellie was still on but now I see why she does not have that personality you need and learn at a young age of accepting critism very well. I hope everyone who was a fan of Elliot's votes extremely hard for Taylor because this girl does not deserve to win. Taylor truly seems like someone that would never forget Elliot or the others if he won but Kat reminds me of someone who would never give any of them another thought. Oh and one more thing the whole comment about not speaking with her parents that much was her little way of saying she was not receiving any voice coaching on the phone from mommy dearest. If the others were able to speak with their parents I'm sure she did too.

Elliott's farewell was, in the words of the Soul Patrol: Classiest. Exit. Ever.

And I'll take class over winning anyday.

Plus, Elliott is free after August rather than the two years of confinement he would have been as a runner-up or better.

FYI: And remember, I'm just the messenger and not advocating anything, but Elliott's girlfriend was on the message boards last night (and yes, it's her for certain) urging members of the E-Train to join forces with the Soul Patrol. Elliott fans voting for Taylor are now known as the Soul Train.

I'm not condemning Katharine over her reaction last night. She was happy to have escaped another bullet, and I don't blame her. Her parents, however, may have really cost her. The camera catching them celebrating in contrast to Elliott's mom has more people McPissed (LOL) than anything Katharine has ever done. At this point every little tiny insignificant detail can be costly.

So I'm sure you were all cluck-clucking at Taylor every time he gave his two-handed-clenched-fist-pump when he was told he was safe in prior shows. If you don't like the girl, just say so - don't hold her to a different standard than you would hold any of the other contestants to. She was happy - I certainly would be. Maybe her emotions are a little too close to the surface but in reading the various blogs around, I don't think I would respond well to some of the outright hate out there. As much as some would like, it's an entertainment contest, not a singing contest - if it was it would be on radio. Elliot will be fine - he'll fit very nicely into the "Bill Withers" niche. Chris will front a rock band, Taylor will do his shows & Katharine will end up on Broadway. All will be right with the world & we'll have the same fights next year - can't wait!!!

The whole thing just verifies that, no matter how many times the judges say it, this is NOT a singing competition. If it were, nobody would care about parents in the audience, wardrobe or facial expressions.

Next year? This is why I'm glad this show only comes around once a year. I need time to recover. LOL And you're right, next year it will be the same, just with a different cast of characters.

And for those who think Katharine's getting it bad, IMO, this is NOTHING compared to what people put Carrie Underwood through last season.

ohboyohboyohoy!! I just got done reading all the posts and I must say I'm pretty disgusted!! First, I hope Taylor takes the whole thing. Second, I agree Elliot is probably the most genuine, kindhearted soul that's ever stepped on the AI, or any other stage.. and he has an amazing voice which will take him far.
However, the vicious comments about Katharine are making me really upset. Did I watch a different AI last night???
When I saw what a poor reception she received compared to Taylor and Elliot I was almost squirming in embarrassment for her. I know Hollywood is so bored to death by celebrities and that it was to be expected that she wouldn't have much of a turn out but it was so sparse and lacking compared to the guys!! I truly felt sorry for her. Then, when Elliot's name was called, she was sad!!! they hugged for a long time. She was probably expecting to be the one to go home and you can't blame her for being a little happy that she wasn't.. come on people.. give this kid a break.. she can't do anything right as far as some of you are concerned. She can't dress right, she can't sing right, (NOT TRUE) she can't dance right, her relationship with her parents isn't right.. if she talks too much then she's getting extra coaching, if she talks to little she's a spoilt little brat. What's the matter with people??? Are you all just jealous of a young, talented, extremely pretty girl who comes from a well to do family? I noticed similar attitudes regarding Ayla.. comments on her being a spoiled little rich girl and the like!!
I understand that Elliot's fans are unhappy he's going home and I was crying last night too.. but I'm just utterly disgusted with some of the responses I've seen here.

It's revolting to see the apologists for Katherine out there, sticking their heads in the sand and attempting to deny the fact that their idol is acting like a diva. On her home town visit, she pranced around, like she had already won the competition. There was no genuine warmth in her towards anyone.

Her comments about calling her parents were so off-putting, one would wonder whether she was birthed or perhaps hatched. She apparently had no regard how her comments hurt and obviously (by their expressions) embarrassed her parents ON NATIONAL TELEVISION. Reminds me of a line from King Lear, that likens an ungrateful child to a serpent's tooth.

Katherine has NEVER been able to take constructive criticism from any judge constructively, without whining about it with her "poor me" excuses. Tuesday night she had the temerity to even state, "You're being so hard on me," after Randy had the nerve to make a comment that Miss Perfect wasn't so perfect.

She has been given a pass, despite the fact she has blown the lyrics twice in the last 3 weeks, has sung off-key, hit bad notes, some so bad the cat ran out of the room in fright. But Katherine has NOT taken anything BUT praise in stride, she has NOT grown in this competition, at 21 she apparently believes she has all the answers.
Looks can only get you so far.

In contrast, the Taylor detractors don't have much to say against him, other than he dances like a spazz. And Elliot detractors had to resort to commenting about his teeth and lokking like a nerd.

Katherine is an open field day for fault finders. She had some pretty condescening comments about small town people turping up IN DROVES to support their idols, someone please let her know that Richmond, VA. is not exactly Podunkville. This was to cover up that she could barely fill a small high school with her fans. Perhaps LA people, in all their sophistication have seen the pretty faced self indulgent princesses come and go, much like I believe Katherine and her attitude will come and go, and go quickly.

It would be wrong to blame it on her age, Paris certainly did not act like this brat on her worst day. Even Kellie, who may have been as phony as they come, had the grace to accept criticism, and bow out with some class. If Katheine doesn't win, I would imagine her throwing a tantrum, stomping her foot, pouting, and throwing some hissy fit on stage.

I hope that Elliot supporters vote for Taylor next week, it would be a damned shame if this self-posessed diva won. The girl can't even sell a song, that plastered smile of hers wears thin, despite the lyrics, she sings with absolutely no heart.

If you want a robot as your next idol, vote for Katherine, the not so great. If you want a human being, vote for Taylor.

I have not liked Kat through the whole season. I was and am shocked she lasted this long. I do hope Taylor gets it all. As for the posts whining about people whining about Kat. Let's not forget the big whine of her own..."You are being so hard on me these past couple of weeks" WAH WAH WAH. In my opinion, she really blew it. The judges are at times hard on everyone. She is an exception of some kind? She rely needs to get over herself.
GO TAYLOR!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Such incredible vitriol!!! against a 21 yr old!! I'm stunned!! My take on her comments on "small towns" was basically this: LA is not the kind of town that will come out in droves for an individual as there are so many "famous" people there already. I think she was a little embarassed and would have loved a reception like the guys has. How is she supposed to behave at such receptions? Different from the guys who dance and wave and smile and give thumbs up signs and punch the air and I could go on. Is she supposed to duck her head and act ashamed because some people don't think she should have made it this far? She made it this far because plenty of other people wanted her to.. that's it!! As far as I'm concerned, the only contestant who had no "flubs" this season was Chris (except for when he screamed) and that's just a personal taste issue. All the contestants messed up at one time or another.. even Elliot!! I recall Paris have some 'bratty' moments too and when Kelly apologized for "butchering" a song or when the judges expressed dislike for one of her performances.. the boards went nuts saying that was inappropriate..
Basically, the American Idol audience is far too critical of these kids and it gets ridiculously personal. Either you like their singing and performing abilities or you don't. This shredding of an individuals character is out of line.

I'm really going to miss Elliott. As last night proved, he is a gentleman, a class act. When he came onto the ballfield, did you notice that he took his hat off to the military? What a sweet guy. I cried buckets last night--during his home visit footage, when he got voted off...I was still sniffling when my mom called to bemoan his exit.

But I do believe, as many of you have said, we haven't seen the last of Elliott Yamin. He's a talented, classy guy who obviously has a bright future ahead of him. I wish he had won, but I have no doubt that he'll go incredibly far.

Next week, my votes are going to Taylor. I hope he wins this thing, now that Elliott's gone.

We'll miss you, Elliott, but we're sure we'll see your name in lights someday.

What a seething hotbed of anti-elitism this once-wonderful blog (*) has turned into! No, I'm certainly not defending anybody's perceived fragile ego, desire to be a diva, or anything of that nature. But people - please! This is a reality show. Anonymous said: What a poor way to try to win. Everytime she received a negative comment she has to look at her family like she wants to stomp her feet and have a temper tantrum. That's an amazing observation, really. With a dozen camera angles and a HUGE stage (not to mention stage lighting), is it really possible to tell where a person is looking?

Is Katharine immature? Sure she is. So was I, in many ways -- at 31, much less 21 (just ask "Formerly"!). But back to AI being a reality show. Don't you think it's just *possible* that we're seeing the Katharine that AI wants us to see? Just like the Ace that they wanted us to see during Queen night? Remember - with all those cameras, you can focus on whatever you want, even during a live program.

How about displaying a little class (ooh - dare I use that word?) yourself towards a fellow human being (which has recently been called into question) who doesn't quite know how to handle herself on a national stage just yet? I'm sure she'll learn. It's called "growing up".

K, for the record, it's KathArine...

She was being sarcastic in nature when they were talking about the phone calls, like duh, she's with them all the time, if ya watched the show and paid attention to something other than her facial expressions, you would know this.

Um, she's 21, stop being so hard on her. She has the right to act like a Diva...wait no she doesn't, she hasn't been to rehab yet, like Mariah, Whitney....man I never saw so many jealous bitter people in one place, oh wait yes I have, every summer when I go to the community pool and I look better than the other mothers who have less kids than me ;)

Ahem. Don't make me stop this car!

(Sorry, I just always wanted to say that...)

Look, I'm all for free exchange of ideas; that's the whole reason for this thing. And, fairly or unfairly, when these kids sign on for this show, they open themselves up for scrutiny, both on and off stage. I don't think a lot of it is fair, but it's part of the deal.

However, I would rather read arguments why a contestant should WIN, rather than LOSE. And it seems I haven't read many of those lately.

I'm with the last anon, the anger at katherine is rediculous. And consider that at least a third of the people who got thru to vote like her. that was 16 million votes, just like E and T got. 16 million votes, probably 3 to 5 million people per kid, aren't stupid. At some point you need to look in the mirror and ask why do you not like Kat and Ayla? It strikes me as curious most of those posting here who dislike Kat passionately are female(note I said most, not all, meaning over 50%), and it does remind me of a cat fight mentality. Are you sure you don't dislike her, and Ayla for that matter, for simply having more/better feminine whiles than yourselves? Or maybe it's just they come from upper middle class or upper class families, and you have some class hatred going on?

As I recall, many were NOT voting for Ayla because of her well to do family, NOT because she didn't deserve a shot. That's low. Idol doesn't have a rule that says you have to be from the wrong side of the tracks, no parents, poor, homeless, sob story rich. You have to be able to sing and perform, and be between 16 and 28. Pretty simple rules. If you don't like Kat because you perceive she gets breaks in life many of us don't get, that's life. Elliot was a long shot to make the top12 at the start, he makes the top3, and you act like it was a travesty. He wasn't even suppose to make it into the Top6 when the top12 began. He's the super over acheiver. If the Top12 started all over again today, then he'd likely be the favorite, not Taylor. But E has shown style, he has represented my HOME state wonderfully, he's been classy and elegant, and yeah, his hometown video almost had me tearing up (even though I have a low opinion of the Richmond area. It's dirty and smells like tobacco :) )

Kat had a bad week or two, but prior to that was expected to be in the top3. Prior to her bomb on Elvis week and the week befor, didn't most everyone expect Elliot to go home by that week? It's a competition, no one got screwed, each of them received 16million plus votes, and it was literally a coin toss difference. over 50 million votes and only .6% (310,000) votes seperate 1 and 3? That's simply amazing. It means all 3 kids are extremely well liked, unlike past years where only 2 deserved to move on. We all knew this was going to happen by the top6. We all knew that this was the strongest top6 ever. And had Kellie not fallen apart that week, she likely would have survived to the Top4, and E would have been gone in top5 week. Paris was the shoe-in to be gone before the top4, but Kellie was expected to be there, until her terrible 6 week, and hence getting booted. That saved Elliot, that alone. And just like with Chris, this may be better for them to not be tied to the AI contract. It hasn't been bad for the others, their albums have done very well, but maybe they would have done slightly different albums if not stuck with what Clive's people want them to do. Elliot has a lot of options this way, and a major fan base ready to show their love. Can you really want more for him than to be where he is now? Now he has options versus only having a Clive option. Maybe you should thank Kat for that if you like Elliot so much :)

/conspiracty theory follows, read at your own peril :) haha

As I think about the post above with the water comparison, I gotta say bravo, good job. that is so correct, and it is obvious by our inability to vote consistantly for any of the kids any night that there simply are not enough phone lines. If we only get in about 10% of the time via phone, then that means every contestant is getting the same number of phone votes, regardless of the size of their fan base. I suspect earlier in the season, some lines are packed and others are free to take calls, and those cases the phone lines make a difference. But if 9 in 10 calls fails for each kid, then the total number of phone votes will be within hundreds of each other every time, as the lines are so full everytime a line opens up it is immediately filled.

This is where it all starts making sense. Cingular pays a ton to be the exclusive text system for Idol. Idol has limited phone lines, such that voting by phone isn't actually going to affect the outcome. This leaves texting as the only way to affect the voting and get every vote thru. Cingular either gets us to pay more per month just so we can have unlimited texting when we text vote, or we pay them by the vote on their cheaper plans. Either way, Cingular wins, and Fox wins because Cingular pays more money for the right to make more money. The error for all of us on this board was sitting on phone lines that were already over congested. Our votes didn't matter, because so many other people where also phoning in that it was purely random timing that got us in. Had we spent those same 2 hours texting, every vote would have counted. I think next year I'm gonna upgrade to an unlimited text plan and just vote that way :) Phone voting only matters when the number is answering maybe 50% of the time. That means there isn't an overly large caller base for that person. When you are getting in 10% or less of the time, you're vote is pointless, as you not calling just means one of the others calling will get in in your place. There are still more people calling than the lines can handle.

so it would seem Kat and Taylor simply had more Cingular phone using, text voting fans than E did this week. something to keep in mind next week, phoning in won't make a difference, texting will :) even with 3 numbers each, Taylor's phone voting will be capped by how many can actually get thru, even if his base is twice as large as Kats. And as long as hers is bigger than the capacity of the system, they'll end up with the same phone votes. man what a racket for getting Cingular more money, makes me not wanna vote anymore :) I need to get a working modem and use dialidol to max out the phone vote while texting to increase it above the phone limit next year :)

Last time I checked, this was a free country, and people were permitted to express their opinions whether popular or not.

I resent one of the posters here assuming that the anti-Katherine voters are all females injoying a good cat fight. Talk about a sexist remark.

I happen to be male, and have made a post or two expressing my dislike for the prima donna, and you'd be surprised how many other males over the age of 18, who are NOT impressed with the spoiled diva routine, have had it up to here with Katherine.

Before making a gross generalization in your zeal to defend the princess of pout, check your facts.

Back to Jennifer's "play nice" point. She's 100% right. Why should Taylor win? Why should Kat win? Both are much more fun things to discuss. Taylor has personality plus and a unique style. Kat has the looks & that tremendous singing voice - with the right song. All the others are long gone. I would much rather vote FOR someone than against someone.

What's the theme next week?

Besides his voice and gripping stage presence, Taylor's charm and pure love for music makes him the best choice for American Idol.

No, he's not as good looking as Kat. It's arguable that he isn't even as vocally strong as Kat.

But the sheer joy of watching him completely throw himself (sometimes literally) into his songs is what makes my husband and I tune in each Tuesday night.

Some people say that only the text votes count

The only votes that count are the ones people use to buy the CDs of their favourite performers, regardless if that person is crowned the "Idol" winner or not. The true winners are the singers that go gold and platinum.

So next week's votes don't really matter. You want your opinion heard? Put your MONEY where your heart is and cast you true vote for a CD.

It doesn't matter that Kat sang, "I've Got Nothing But the Blues" with that ever-present smile on her face, she doesn't have to think about the lyrics and feel the music. All she has to do is look pretty and let the camera keep doing those up and down body swoops as Paula tells her how lovely she looks in that color.

Taylor will win because the man can sing and has talent. Why does cutting down Taylor make you feel better about what people say about Kat? By denigrating his abilities, does that validate your feelings toward your preference?

Taylor will sell PLENTY of CDs, and his personal appearances will be extremely well attended, I will not comment on how many people managed to show up to see your Kat perform. You could shoot a cannon through the room.

good point Bruno! but buying their cd isn't gonna help next week's results :) haha

I love Taylor and his antics, so does my family. he's a joy to watch perform. He's the kind of performer you want to see live. Kat is a beautiful girl that if I were 15 years younger I'd want to be first row at her concert with roses to give her :) And she has a wonderful voice most of the time, though she SMILES way to dang much on TV while she's singin'.

I find Kat more of a close you eyes and enjoy the vocal kinda of singer, same with Elliot. Taylor is more of a 'you want to go to a show and be entertained' kind of performer. Which you go see would depend on your mood :) Oh, just remembered a visual I had in reference to Kat, and the type of performer I think she would be great as. If anyone remembers the movie "the Fabulous Baker Boys" with the Bridges on Piano as I recall and Michelle Phiefer as the singer as I recall, that is the style I picture Kat as. Sort of like a lounge singer, with the pianist, lying across a beautiful black Grand singing sultry songs of love, and batting her eyes at the men in the crowd :) I'm not saying she sounds like a typical lounge singer, but I envision her in more of a 40's style of singing. Basically the opposite of a Brittany Spears. I guess Broadway could work, if she wants to head that way.

Elliott I'm not sure, does he play any instrument? Would he be comparable to a Harry Connick Jr.? More the crooner style? I'm not sure how to picture Elliott down the road. Taylor is a showman, I see him headlining in Vegas and places like that. Smaller, more intimate, bluesy clubs than big arena style. I see him being very personal with the crowd, and showing lots of emotion and 'soul'. And Chris should take the Fuel gig I think, that seems to be a perfect fit unless he wants to be into alternative Christian Rock, which someone said his band was doing.

And Paris seems destined for some Motown and R&B probably, maybe even Beyonce style? That girl could really sing, she was needs more seasoning and life experience to understand the songs she was singing. In 10 years, she may be the biggest star of this group, would not surprise me at all if it happened.

Okay, where up there did I BASH Taylor or point out anything BAD about him? No need to hit below the knees and point out the fact that Kat had a smaller home reception...she knew that's how it was going to be, she's not from East Hoboken...she did however get offered a part in a movie by George Clooney so if ya want to point out good things about Tay, you might as well do it about everyone, and BTW I'm a Chris fan, yeah remember him, the guy who EVERYONE on the face of the planet wanted to win?

There's no need for this, no need to stand up for anyone, they will both walk away with recording contracts, one will have the title and it's envitable, one will outlast/outsell the other and neither one of them will be as succesful as Kelly Clarkson, who I saw in concert and I can tell you this, she's not that good, live. That won't stop me from enjoying her CD's all summer.

Everyone needs to stop bashing Kat & Taylor. I honestly don't know where anyone is getting that this girl is arrogant, snotty, snobby or is acting "diva" like. I guess I've been watching a different show than you all.

What I see is an extreemly talented young woman who may not have the experience the others do. I think it's nerve wrecking up there for these folks and she may not be good at the "talking" part. I think if you actually met her, you'd find that she is a sweet sweet soul.

Why so much hate? I'm amazed that those of you who are doing the bashing have been able to figure out what a diva Kat is by the small amount of screen time you've seen of her. She has so not come across the way you all are portraying her.

As someone else posted, they will all make records so when YOUR idol has their c.d. out, go buy it. Don't like Kat or Taylor, then don't vote. But please stop the meanness.

I just get really bent when people hate people because their pretty, I'm pretty, my daughters are models and it hurts just as bad to be picked on when you are appealing...it's not something that's just reserved for ugly people.

However, my cousin is a neighbor of Katharine's family and she said everyone in Sherman Oaks is pulling for her and that the family is very nice and down to earth... I guess as much as you can be in Hollywood :) So, basically, whoever said we can't form character opionions from a few moments on tv.. what do we really know about any of the contestants except what AI chooses to show us?

Actually it is exactly my role. Just call me JUDGE JENNIFER!.. (That Judy lady's got nothing on me.)

I've always wanted to say that too.

The problem is, and has always been, is that we, as viewers, have nothing to go by but what we're shown. And you can BET they had cameras on each of the families, on Kat, on Taylor, on Elliott just waiting for a reaction that might cause watercooler talk. They did and it did. But I would like to think that we would take a collective breath before simply jumping to conclusions about people we don't know, what they're thinking, who they are, etc. before we decide to crucify them.

Unfortunately, as I've learned through 3 seasons of blogging this show, that just doesn't happen. Fair? No. But it's the nature of this show, which makes it so addicting.

But please, no insulting or attacking other posters. I'm asking now. But I am not beyond deleting comments and playing cop. The kids are fair game if you really feel the need to tear a kid to shreds over anything but performing ability.

I've just never understood the need to build up somebody by tearing down somebody else, but I've never understood why they sell packages of 8 buns and 10 hotdogs either.

Here’s an e-mail I received from an Elliott Yamin fan in Oregon who defends the singer and responds to one of my anti-Elliott rants:

“I realize that you’re entitled to freedom of the press but how do you think poor Elliott, the ‘long shot’ feels hearing how ugly he is and how his teeth are the worst. I think it’s terribly cruel for anyone to be making a public spectacle of it, especially since he cannot do anything about it during this competition. If image is a big factor, and I know it is, how the heck did Reuben or Fantasia win?

Taylor already has a band and apparently has a CD out that is currently selling upwards of one million copies….how do pretty much established performers get into these contests, against unknown/untrained, although wonderful voice like Elliott?

I would think it would be nicer for the unknowns to not have to compete against seasoned veterans. Look how far Elliott has come, with who he is challenging for title. I do feel he is the most deserving. It was obvious in the beginning how ‘not accustomed’ he was to being in the spot light/on stage. He has come so far, it’s just mind boggling. Katharine had a wonderful voice; although not sure why suddenly she is messing up so much … she will get a contract and go far. Taylor has an OK voice but his spastic jumping around really puts me off.”

good points by the E fan mostly. But I do believe the AI rules stipulate a contestant has to not have an existing record contract right? So T and his band can make a home album easy enough, and with this popularity on the show, that would obviously take off if it were available thru some online music site. I'm expecting that is more likely the situation for Taylor. Though, like Bo last year, we can see there are definite advantages to being someone who's out doing the club band circuit and gaining the experience in front of an audience.

I like the way the Katherine apologists whine about Taylor being spastic.... yet they cry whenever anyone says boo about Katherine.

Well, when people are all over the place bashing her for being pretty and making nicey nice to the camera, you better expect people to make puns about Taylor.

To quote Randy, "Taylor is the DAWG" Some people like ""Kats"" others prefer ""DAWGS"" some like both animals.. I'm in column 3!! They both deserve to be where they are!!

Oh Jennifer, can you please start another blog that has nothing to do with Taylor being spastic or Kat being heartless or WHATEVER. AT first it was alittle fun to see the diversity, but now it's just a bunch of name calling and it's getting pretty BORING!!!!!

Can we do a - What do you want them to sing next week blog or something?? Actually, you should do whatever you want, you are the queen of the blog!! You always come up with somethng great. You rock!

I agree with much of what anon @6:16 said. I think what makes me feel really sad about Elliott's loss is the way he was totally dismissed, while other contestants were being pushed. I don't think the show ever played fair with him and that's why he was always considered an underdog. His voice was better than most but I think they may have had a problem with his "image". I thought he was adorable.

Does anyone know if any of the previous years contestants, other than the top two, have been successful? I really hope there is a future out there for Elliott in the music industry.

Next week there is no theme...they will be singing two songs written for "them" and they will both sing them (one sings one,one sings another and they they switcharoo) and I believe they sing something THEY want.

You know what's funny? Everyone coming in here and defending Taylor...scroll back some, you'll see the slander started with someone bashing Kat.

i was reading some of the post, and i just kept thinking about something. i know there are alot of taylor fans on here, and i've made it known from the beginning that i'm a huge elliott fan. taylor...yes does put on a good show, and i've read alot of, "we or i love to watch him" what happens when AI goes off and you can't watch him, will his voice be up to parr at selling millions of records as past idols? Kat does ok, but i think she should of gone before chris and elliott. i just think that out of the 3 that were left this week, elliott had the power to sell the millions that AI is after. I'm not against taylor so please don't think that...i'm just kinda.....standing back and looking at the whole picture.. jami

I would buy Elliots CD immediately - I agree with you that Elliot could out sell Taylor or Katherine any day

Slander is spoken.
Libel is written.
Unless you have a speech program on your computer, the use of the word slander, is incorrect.

Just for the record.

Taylor has been called a spazz for weeks now. The threads have been equal, if not a little more on the Taylor bashing side than on the Kat bashing side.

To all you would be bashers out there: Placed in the same position as your target, do you think you could do any better?

Just a thought

who's bashing Taylor's dancing? making fun of it, in a light hearted way, sure, but bashing? na. Taylor is too funny to bash.

and I talked to my dad tonight, he's 74 and only one ear sorta hears anymore. And he's been asking me why people keep voting for Elliott, because he can't stand how Elliott sounds. The point being, not everyone likes the same thing. If some of us like Elliott and some like kat and some like Taylor and some Chris, and some even Pickles, it doesn't make any of us wrong for doing so. It's just the type of sound we find enjoyable.

heck, if you'll remember, somehow, somewhere, there were people voting for Kevin. I don't think I've heard a worse sounding top12 participant. I never could figure out why no one said the obvious, he sings thru his nose! He was extremely nasal sounding. But at least he was able to sing mostly in tune, unlike myself. I'm hopeless, but I try not to sing thru my nose while I'm singing out of tune :) haha

So if there are people who'll vote for Kevin, why get upset because some people like Kat over Elliot? it's just personal preference. the point of the show is who's personal preference matches more of the people watching any given week. So far, Taylor and Kat have been liked the most across the country. just means there are likely a lot of people who, like my dad, didn't understand what was so good about Elliott. He'll be fine, don't worry, he'll have an album as soon as he's allowed.

you can't watch this show week after week, and have someone u love and someone u dislike. that's what this show is about, picking your fav vocal talent. everyone has different views on that, and if u can't make that known on an american idol website, where can u make that known? people will feel how they want, say what they want.....(within' reason and have respect for the person or persons running the site)..and be ok with that. of course when someone goes against the person you like the most, it's a lil upsetting, but remember we all have our own points of view. and thats ok. as known, i wanted elliott to win, and as posted i said i didn't think taylor would really sale..but thats just my thoughts, doesn't mean i dislike him. i think kat over-all has not over the past shows ben consistant and deserve the idol spot, but that doesn't mean i dislike her either. of course when ur fav. leaves and ur an american idol junkie, ur gonna be upset. this season has benn a lil funky. strange things going on. but that makes for good t.v. nothing sales more than an american idol upset. we all noticed the roar that went on after chris left. it's sales, everyone goes crazy....has we've seen on this site. just remember...we are all in this for the same thing. to see "our" favorite american idol contestant win. we put our time, money, and some emotion into it. that means temper's will fly, tears will be shed, and friends will be made. be a lil more considerate of that when responding to someone who has something to say. ty again, jami
