it's the clive davis show, not starring clive...

The long and winding road is winding down, but before we get to Oz, we gotta drive the last mile and throw somebody outta the car.

Unless somebody hurls him or herself out first.

Because THIS is American Idol.

And it's the Clive Show, the final three episode where the kids sing three songs, one of their own choosing, one handed to them from one of the judges, and one decreed from above, from the great one himself, Clive Davis.

Two will go the Kodak next week. One gets to take a long nap and boogie in the Brady Bunch tune instead.

And what a bummer - Clive the star isn't even gonna judge tonight. Eh, that's okay, he normally just says the same thing every time. Paula was his mentor.

And these are my early impressions, subject to rewind, revision and reorder, and as always, from worst to first.

Katharine McPhee (I Believe I Can Fly/Clive Davis selection). Clive says this song is a classic. (Probably in the same sense that Open Arms is a rock song.) Randy says she looks amazing. (And she does!!) Paula says her dress is a beautiful color. Never good. Simon says the others are wrong, that she didn't oversing (yes she did) and that aside from the crap notes at the end she "created a moment."

Elliott Yamin (Open Arms/Clive Davis selection). Clive says he wants Elliott to sing a rock song. Okaaay. Elliott sounds a bit nervous, and I think he transposed a couple of lines. He gets mediocre reviews from Randy (who reminds us, yet again, that he was with Journey) and Paula, and Simon admonishes him to start believing in himself. It was a shaky start, certainly not ranking among his best, but certainly no disaster.

Katharine McPhee (Ain't Got Nothing But the Blues/Personal Choice). Kat decides to channel Ella and the other great females, but hasn't learned yet that she's just not yet. Randy says blah. Paula says meh. Simon repeats after the first two.

Taylor Hicks (Dancing in the Dark/Clive Davis selection). Taylor says thanks to Clive for begging the Boss to let him sing the song. Taylor does all these cute little gun movements and pulls Paula up on the catwalk like Courteney Cox in the video. Oooo. Nice touch Taylor. But the song, as well presented as it was, lacked the Taylorisms I've come to hope for. Simon says meh and Paula wishes for double-stick tape.

Elliott Yamin (What You Won't Do For Love/Judges Pick). The confident Elliott is back on his second number, and he puts an original spin on the Bobby Caldwell song. Randy says he's sharp throughout, Paula mumbles incoherently, but Simon gives him a thumbs up. I say there were a few missteps, but overall, for me, preferable to the original, and even moreso if he were given longer than a 90 second arrangement.

Elliott Yamin (I Believe to my Soul/Personal Choice). Now that's Elliott, with a Donny Hathaway cover of a Ray Charles tune. Randy praises his singing, but not the song. Paula echoes Randy, as usual. Simon tells him he's a great guy but that he's history, single-handedly lighting a fire under every Elliott voter determined to prove Simon wrong.

Taylor Hicks (Try a Little Tenderness/Personal Choice). The Taylor we know lets loose. Randy gives him a new name with funky somewhere in there. Paula says she's waited all season for him to perform the song. (Ahem.) Simon says he'll see him next week.

Katharine McPhee (Somewhere Over the Rainbow/Judges Pick) Simon says he expects a moment from Kat, and she's sitting on the floor again, singing the opening that most people don't know a cappella, before launching into the lyrics we all recognize. She really restrains the vocals in a lovely and poignant performance. Randy says personal best. Paula gives a standing ovation and tells her what we've been screaming for weeks. Simon tells her it was the best performance of the season. I wouldn't go that far, but it was her best.

Taylor Hicks (You Are So Beautiful/Judges Pick). Taylor channels Joe Cocker with a simple, understated performance of a beautiful, understated song. Randy says yay! Paula says yay! Simon says another best ever.

With a few great ones, and a few less-than-great ones, it's all but over.

Taylor is certain, and I am going to hope that the Elliott fans vote harder than ever. Simon's declarations can work wonders. I still say Kat leaves. A season's worth of great work should not be reduced to one rainbow.

So, what's your verdict?

Okay, so Katherine's over the rainbow was great, I admit... But didn't anyone else get the "copying Bo" vibe when she started acappela lit by the single spotlight?!?! And, as much as I love this season, I would have traded tonight's whole show for a recap of that Bo performance!!!

Was it just me or did Clive Davis royally screw over every one of the finalists this year?

His song selections were horrible.

And how about VCM smacking Randy down when he tried to use the "It's all about the song choice" line on her?

"I didn't choose it!," she said.

I think "Over the Rainbow" might have put VCM over the top (sorry, Yaminiacs!). Elliott was pretty good, but he didn't show any cleavage or leg and that might be the difference between a spot on the finale and a guest spot on the final results show.

Katharine needed to avoid screwing up this week and for the most part, she did (You can't blame her for "I Believe I Can Fly"). Plus, she had "the moment" with "Over the Rainbow" and Elliott didn't have one tonight.

Taylor gets a free pass on to next week.

I like Elliott as a person. I really do. But he reminds me of Diana DeGarmo and the baa baa sheep singing that she did. Something about him bugs me. I can look beyond his image and looks and I have all season so far. I commend him for being able to sing since he is 90% deaf in his right ear. (I am 70% deaf in my left ear- so I can relate.) But, I don't understand what the big deal is with him.

Although it's true that Katharine did use some of Eva Cassady's licks, she was mostly imitating the jazz singer Jane Monheit from her 'Come Dream With Me' album. Still, she pulled it off really well. I'm voting for Taylor, tho.

Katherine sang one song well in 3 weeks, the other two songs she sang tonight were bad and worse. Over the Rainbow should NOT be her ticket into the finals, at least both the boys don't hit screechingly bad notes like Katherine did and does. Plus, I think she's a snot, not the stuff that comes out of your nose.....she just seems to act like she think's she all that....she's reading her press a little too much.

Elliot, however, did not have his best singing night. I adore him as a person, but I wish he had done a better job singing. He didn't. He's going home, he doesn't have and T & A to save him as Katherine does.

Taylor to win by a landslide.

I have successfully gotten thru 3 times in the past 55 mins. Dialidol has Katharine and Elliott neck and neck at 64.132 each. Taylor is safely in the number one spot at 69.184. I guess it is safe to say that Taylor will win this thing outright and I am okay with that, it's who goes with him to the final two that I am not okay with. I don't want it to be Katharine because I think she robbed everyone last week with forgetting her lyrics and still making it thru and for not making it this far on her vocal talents alone. We all know she has gotten past some crappy weeks because she is so amazing to look at. Her looks should not get her the spot as the American Idol. I would like to see Taylor and Elliott in the final two, but somehow, it's looking like, in true "American" fashion, an Taylor/Katharine finale.

ok, thoughts on tonight.

Taylor's performances were very good to great, vocally they weren't all great, but the cocker song was in my estimation the best song of the season behind the song right before that, by Kat.

Elliot was good, my kids enjoyed him, he's pleasant. And that's his problem, he's only pleasant. He has no spark, no excitement, no "hook". I found his songs ok, but none of them were show stoppers, but none were as bad as kat's first song.

As for Kat, simply enough, Rainbow could have been better if she'd stayed a cappella the whole time. Otherwise, that was superb. Clive's song was weak, as it was for all of them. Her song was a little indulgent, and she did some of her bad things like too much smiling, but that song actually seemed to fit the smiling.

I do agree with Jen, Clive bombed for the most part, or at least the arrangements did. The judges rocked, and Simon is right, someone should have listened to the warmups and changed the order :)

So, after all this, when I close my eyes, pretend I'm listening on the radio, Taylor is the only one who is performing well enough right now. Sorry, but Elliot does NOT have a radio voice, at least not yet. Chris had a radio voice. Kat, when she sings like she did on Rainbow, is the best hands down. It's those other songs that are keeping her down. If she was singing like she did on Rainbow for the past 4 weeks, it wouldn't even be a question who the favorite is. Her problem is consistancy and understanding the type of singer she is, versus what she is trying to be. Taylor knows what he is and it shows, and it is why he is gonna win. Elliot hasn't figured out who he is, or who he wants to be. And that lack of confidence showed some tonight, especially on the first song. And it's based on this that I think Elliot goes home. Taylor performs every week, and while not being the best vocalist, he has the showmanship to be the AI. Kat has the total package, and I think Clive and Simon realize that with a little work and training, she would have the broadest appeal, possibly enough to compete with Kelly's success. Taylor is likely niche recorder, though he should be an amazing concert performer. The Vegas idea wasn't a bad one, he'd likely do very well in a Vegas/Branson environment with some club touring. Elliot seems to need seasoning and training in how to grab his audience. he'll be a good singer for sure, but hard to tell how successful. There are plenty of successful people in the music biz who just don't seem to deserve it, so I think it's always about the singing, which hurts E.

so, I'm not going to be surprised if E goes, and don't think it matters which stays, Taylor is gonna kill whoever is left next week. The only chance of knocking T off would be Kat with 2 performances as graceful and powerful as Rainbow was tonight, but I would never bet money on her actually doing that since she hasn't shown understanding that yet.

oh, and it's not just Elliots number being odd. I was trying Kats numbers and I got thru twice, where it rang, then disconnected me after short time. I went into tonight's show feeling that I would vote for Elliott and Taylor but to be honest, Kat outsung Elliott. I was very disappointed in all his songs. His own choice I felt was a poor one. I have not been able to get through to any phone nos. All are busy. I feel that it will be Elliott leaving although I hope to be wrong. LOVED Taylor's performance of You are so Beautiful although would have loved for him to hit the high note like Cocker does at the end. The performance of Rainbow was by far Kat's best. She looked gorgeous.

Kat's "Over the Rainbow" was refreshing that she didn't oversing it like she has everything else for the last few weeks. When she sings it straight, she is very entertaining.

But does she have any clue what this song is about?? I don't get why she was smiling and flirting throughout the song. It just didn't fit, and it turned me off somewhat.

Great vocals - strange visuals.

What a weird night... The Paula factor was all over the place. One moment she's say something somewhat valid and to the point and then next she was babbling like such a fool that she was just unwatchable.

Randy, please stop saying "We got a hot one tonight". I can't take it anymore.

And Taylor - a little overboard on the whole "Soul Patrol!" thing tonight. But he still rocks.

Ok, here's my views, idol by idol:

Elliot: "Open Arms" - Clive's pick. I think he sang it beautifully, but I know what you are saying jennifer, he transposed the 2 parts of the chorus and it drove me completely nuts. I was SHOCKED that Randy didn't say something. And did it seem like he didn't even get 90n seconds?? It was over in what seemed to be less than a minute.

"What You Won't Do For Love" - Eh... not a big fan of that song, but he did sing it well. He seemed a little off tonight, kinda disconnected. Not the Elliot I have grown to lurve.

"I Believe to my Soul" - I didn't know the song, but it was his best of the night, I thought. Just an off night for Elliot. Still hope he makes it to F2, though, and I would love to see him win. But he'll never get past the Soul Patrol.

Katharine - "I Believe I Can Fly" - Clive Davis did a bad job with songs this year. I mean, she did the best she could with the song, but it just was not a good pick for her... It was enjoyable at best.

"Over the Rainbow" - Ok, I may get killed for this, but I do NOT see what the big deal was with this one. I do not feel that she had a "moment". Simon said he was glad she didn't oversing... but she DID. Some parts she sang beautifully and then she would go screamy. It was like Chris was back from the AI dead. I wasn't a fan.

p.s. - GET OFF THE FLOOR.

"Ain't Got Nothing But the Blues" - I actually liked this one. I thought it was fun. She was a little manic while performing, but it was my favorite of hers tonight. I thought the judges were way too harsh.

Taylor - "Dancin' in the Dark" - Once again, he did the best he could with it, he had loads of fun, just like Taylor always does. Not a great song. But man, I love watching that guy dance.

"You Are So Beautiful" - Oh my... STELLAR performance. My Mom and I were nearly in tears. Randy - NICE PICK. I would buy this on CD in a millisecond.

"Try a Little Tenderness" - Loved it. Not as good as the original, but the original is hard to beat. Taylor was GREAT - without question the best performer of the night. Is there any doubt he will take the whole thing??

So those are my thoughts.

Do they do bottom 2 tomorrow?? Or do they just announce a loser??

Well, for fun I will say:

Bottom 2: Obviously Elliot and Katharine.

Who I want to go home: Katharine.

Who will: I have absolutely no clue.

What an awesome top 3!

maybe i have got a case of the AI blues or AI over-exposure, but i found tonight to be really lack-luster. this is the first year i have watched AI and i got all wrapped up in it but somehow tonight just didn't work. i've read numerous times how these are the best contestants EVER but i searched around for some videos of previous AI years to see what i missed and i must say that NO ONE this year is even close to Fantasia. I've watched at least 7 of her performances and WOW she is remarkable. no one this year has such vocals and stage presence. although someone pointed out to me that Jennifer Hudson was even better. this year's winner may turn out to be a bit of a dud for sales. more people (and a lot of first time viewers too) probably tuned into tonight's show than any of the previous ones, and i bet you that, based on tonight's performances, people are not going to be rushing out to buy any of these cds. clive and simon must be a tad bit worried at this point.

it may be that chris is the one who is really going to outsell everyone this year. his shocking departure will ensure many of his fans will buy his cd and he actually left on a high note of good performances. besides now that chris is no longer in the competition, AI just seems to lack something - an edge or at least variety in the singers' styles. i have always been a taylor fan but even he bugged me tonight.

I must say that I'm a bit puzzled by the reaction to Taylor's You Are So Beautiful. Perhaps he just lost me from the beginning with his strange, darting glances to and from the camera along with his searching for the pitch (which nobody else seems to have noticed). I thought for sure he was going to warble the ending like Joe Cocker - maybe he didn't trust himself after the shakey start? Or perhaps he planned it that way? Anyway, I was just puzzled by it.

I (still) think it's going to be Taylor and Katharine moving on to the final, with Taylor winning. Who I think should win is a different matter...

I thought that Tay's - You Are So Beautiful was awesome. Try listening to it, without watching it. Part of the beauty is exactly those imperfections in his voice. It sounds simply "personal" like he is singing impromptu - to ME.
Joe Cocker certainly had his own imperfections in that song.

It is what makes that song endearing.

Okay...the lines have officially closed on the West Coast. I did my level best, and if Elliot goes home tomorrow night it won't be because I didn't try! 284 votes from yours truly. *I'VE GOT BLISTERS ON MY FINGERS!*

So here are my picks, worst to first:

Katherine - "I Believe I Can Fly" I hate this song, especially the original. I didn't like it any better on Kat. She oversang it, as usual.

Taylor - "Dancing In the Dark" This is my favorite Springsteen song, and I wasn't all that impressed with T-Man's performance of it. Though I give him props for making it fun, despite weak vocals, by grabbing Paula for a spin on the catwalk. Did anyone else notice how he left her there all alone? lol He gets style points for that!

Katherine - "Aint Got Nothing But the Blues" I do like it when she sings the blues, and thought she did well on this song. But someone has to be 3rd from the bottom and I like the others too much to put her any higher.

Elliot - "Open Arms" When I first heard he was singing this, I wanted to wring Clive's neck for picking this song! NOBODY comes close to Steve Perry vocals. But I gotta say, E did a lot better on it than I expected! But he looked really nervous. :(

Elliot - "What You Won't Do For Love" Perfect song for him. I loved his vocals on this. Thought he sounded really good, but the tempo was just a hair too slow for me.

Katherine - "Somewhere Over the Rainbow" Lovely in parts, including the a capella beginning. But a bit much in other parts. Mixed bag for me, but certainly her best for the night.

Elliot - "I Believe to My Soul" This is a pretty obscure song. He would have done better for himself throughout the competition to choose more widely recognized songs, but I still love his vocals and that touch of sassy he throws in when he's comfortable with a song. :)

Taylor - "Try a Little Tenderness" Home run! LOVED his vocals! LOVED his performance (though he often looks like he's gotta pee real bad)! I just love how he gets so into his songs!

Taylor - "You Are So Beautiful" This is the song I wanted him to sing for Love Songs night. I knew he'd knock it out of the ballpark, and oh my!! he did NOT disappoint! This was definitely his night.

But I'm still voting for Elliot and hope, hope, HOPE that he inches out Kat for that 2nd spot! PLEASE!!!!!!!

Anon: I just did as you suggested--and I see your point. Perhaps it's a gender thing, then, since I don't want him to sing it to me, personally (impromptu or otherwise)! :-) In the interest of Full Disclosure, I guess I should say that I've never liked Joe Cocker's ending to the song, though I do like the song in general.

This season, I've never sensed as great a difference in song times as I did during the 5/16 show. Though I haven't done this with any of the other shows this season, I decided to put a stopwatch to each of the performances. For what it's worth, here are the numbers, a little analysis, and the raw data:

Total Song time = sum of all three songs from beginning to end
Singing time = total song time, less intro and any non-singing time at end

KATHARINE
Total Song 5:31
Singing 5:12

TAYLOR
Total Song 5:20 (97% of Kat's)
Singing 4:54 (94% of Kat's)

ELLIOTT
Total Song 4:30 (82% of Kat's, 84% of Tay's)
Singing 4:07 (79% of Kat's, 84% of Tay's)

Katharine's longest singing time was 2:33, Elliott's longest singing time was 1:38 -- a difference of 55 seconds. Elliott's two shortest songs together had less singing time than Kat's longest. If Kat had left out her shortest song, her total singing time would have been only 1 second less than Elliott's. Kat's shortest singing time was 4 seconds less than Elliott's shortest singing time. Taylor had 18 seconds less singing time than Kat, Elliott had 1:05 less than Kat. Okay, I'll stop.

Just for fun, the raw numbers, longest to shortest singing time:

PERFORMER, SONG TITLE, SONGTIME/SINGINGTIME
Katharine, Somewhere Rainbow, 2:33/2:33
Taylor, Try Little Tenderness, 1:49/1:45
Taylor, You Are So Beautiful, 1:56/1:44
Elliott, I Believe To My Soul, 1:45/1:38
Katharine, I Believe I Can Fly, 1:41/1:33
Taylor, Dancing in the Dark, 1:35/1:25
Elliott, Open Arms, 1:27/1:19
Elliott, Won't Do For Love, 1:18/1:10
Katharine, Ain't Got Nothin' Blues, 1:17/1:06

Just thought some might be interested :)

Katherine could end up winning this whole thing if she makes it to next week, which I think she will.
People who haven't been watching all season will tune in to vote for her because she's pretty.
I'm scared!
Not that I don't like her,...but I like Taylor and Elliott so much more!

I hope Elliot edged Katherine out, but Ihave a feeling he may not have. It's a shame, because I think he would have made an excellent winner, if Taylor wasn't in the competition. I don't think anyone can stop Taylor, and with that man's obvious joy in sharing his music, I can't imagine anyone beating him. He makes me happy just watching him.

I don't see what anyone sees in Katherine besides another pretty face. She has trouble staying on key, constantly hitting bad notes. Her voice tends to get screechy and this when she tries to power through a son. Worst of all, I don't feel any warmth from this ice princess. The way she complained that the judges were being hard on her, shows what one cn only describe as someone who believes they deserve better, and has always been handed that.

It is no doubt that Katherine has had an easy life, her snobby attitude alone attests to that. Her sense of feeling entitlement is so blatant, it's no wonder she doesn't connect with our hearts.

Katherine is eye candy, and I am sure she will do well, as long as there are men out there who don't look beyond the outer shell, and judge a person by their looks. She has no soul.

Not that I'm worried that the greed of Randy and Simon will be satisfied with a bankable Katherine win...Taylor, the round peg will fill the square hole and win this competition hands down.

He deserves it with consistently good performances, and the heart he shows every week. Elliot is just not strong enough to win.

Narcissistic Katherine, doesn't deserve to win. This is one time her looks won't carry her through to victory. Thank goodness some people still vote for the most talented.

I thought it seemed like they allowed more time for Katharine's Somewhere Over the Rainbow. I really enjoyed the performance but they do set themselves up for (justifiable) criticism by doing so. Personally, I think that particualarly at this stage of the competition they should let all of them sing longer. I'd like a chance to see what they all can do with a more standard song length rather than trying to cram everything into 90-120 seconds.

Kat redeemed herself and anyone who comes up in here bashing her outside her vocal talents should be ashamed of themselves...like what does her religion and her "narcissistic personality" have to do with anything!?!? Taylor looked like he was having gas cramps while he performed but that's okay? And that's not bashing, that's making an observation.

Regardless, it will be Kat and Taylor in the finale with Taylor winning, and Kat selling more albums so all he walks away with is the title, which really hasn't meant anything since Kelly Clarkson.....

What is the deal with bashing the Idol winner now??? There comes a point when you just need to say,

"Is this a personal success for the winner"???

Success can be simply measured by the winner reaching their goals and dreams.

Gas cramps? Not bashing? Come on now! Give me a break!

For the first time in a while, I'm actually nervous about watching the results show. You know that I LOVE Elliott, but between Kat's "Over the Rainbow" and Taylor's "You Are So Beautiful"...well, I'm scared. I voted like crazy last night, and I'm still worried that Elliott will leave. He has come SO far, and I guess that should count for something, but I really want him to go through.

I think both Elliott and Taylor are contestants that people were unsure about at first. Some doubters at the beginning weren't sure how far a gray-haired guy could go on Idol. But thankfully he proved them wrong. Like I said earlier, the Joe Cocker song was a stellar performance. I think I even got teary-eyed. He connected with that song so well, and I have no doubt that he'll move on to the finale with flying colors.

It's the Elliott/Kat thing I'm a little worried about. He needed a show-stopping, tear-jerking performance last night, and while I felt that he did well, it probably wasn't his best night. I dialed like crazy last night and only got through a few times. I'm still scared though. I always am at this point in the season. I guess it's out of our hands now, so whoever goes through, goes through.

But we can still hope.

ok, listening to the songs while i read news and sports pages

Elliot's Clive - music sounds right (sounds off for Taylor which I why I mention it) Elliot is controlled and smooth thru the middle, but the end doesn't work for me. My guess is it needed to be longer to build a better finish. Not a vocal I'd pay for as is, but at full length with a proper finish, I'd probably like this song a lot.

Elliot's Judge - Good vocals, nice beat, unknown lyrics/song. No connection, and a pitch prob or two in the middle I just heard. Overall, it's typical Elliot for me, very pleasant, but I can not pick out anything unique about his voice that makes me say wow, I just gotta hear that voice again. It's weird. Not likely a song I'd play over and over.

Elliot's personal - fun tempo/beat. Has a little edge, has some character to the vocal. Don't know the song at all, but it's fun, and definitely the best for E tonight as far as something I could see putting in my mp3 collection to listen to regurlarly. I think it's the key and pitch for this one that makes it stand out more. Would likely keep this one.

Kat's Clive - the music set a nice soft tone, there is an early lyric that seemed edgy/harsh, but overall pleasant and forgetable. And the big notes rather than being just high notes, she seems to be screaming, and that seems to kill the mood of the song. Not a keeper.

Kat's Judge - should have sung the whole song a capella. Wonderful quite, controlled vocal during the a capella. Very solid and controlled thru the middle, as the song builds nicely. Towards the end, as it hits it's highest notes, there is one bad high note, in that it has a little of that scream feel to it. Everything else about this song is wonderful, including the properly sung last high note that is sng rather than screamed for once, and is simply a beautiful ending. This would be a definite keeper song.

Kat's Personal - fun beat, songs like a happy mood song, like if you are in a playful mood. Nice high note in the middle/end that went high without the scream affect. Fun song, not my style, if it was on her first album, I'd listen to it but it wouldn't be a favorite because it seems to need me to be in the right mood first :)

Taylor's Clive - something is wrong with the arrangement from the start. The key is wrong musically and it seems to put Taylor too high. This needs to be lower to sound good. Taylor is trying hard to have fun with the vocals, but the 'sound' isn't working, this would rank below Kat's Personal song, and after going back to listen to Elliot's first 2, I'd say this and Kat's Clive song are the worst songs of the night. Elliot's Clive song I've moved up on my likeability after hearing this again 4 times, as during the main portion of the song it's very nice, it's the ending that I don't like, and if given the whole song, I suspect it would have been great.

Taylor's Judge - music sets the tone beautifully. and while I like the interesting way Taylor stood at the mic watching this, this critique is only of the vocal Jen posted :) Very very good vocal, a lot of energy and emotoin. Kat's rainbow was more powerful and rangy, but this has to be one of Taylor's best, and top 3 or 4 for the season. This would absolutely be kept, and I'm not a person that has songs like this.

Taylor's Personal - lyirc is a little repetative at the beginning, weary this and weary that :) but gets fun and up tempo in the middle, always a good thing in this competition. Only problem with this song is it's too typically pop/rock, as in the lyrics repeat the samw word/words too often, so the singer isn't exposed very much. But the song was a lot of fun, nice arrangement, I'd say 3rd best of the night.

So, basing the songs on sound alone, not watching the show to be distracted, and based on is there enough in the song that I would keep a full version in my personal collection, I'm thinking it goes like this:

Absolute keepers, great vocals and music arrangments:
Somewhere Over the Rainbow by Kat & You Are So Beautiful by Taylor. I'm not picking one as the best really since they are so different in style. Both were wonderfully sung.
Try a Little Tenderness by Taylor. A nice fun, slow to start, up tempo to end song that is well put together.

Very likely keepers, vocals were fine, music is fine, but might need to be in the right mood for, or a little stylistic for me:
Ain't Got Nothing But the Blues by Kat. Not my style, but some really good vocals and the song is fun and happy.
I Believe to my Soul by Elliot. While it's not one I know, it is done well and the vocal is the most memorable of Eliot's tonight.

Unfair to judge fully based on the limited version:
Open Arms by Elliot. Based on just what he did, I wouldn't keep it. Based on the beginning and middle, and how it would likely turn out if the whole song were done, I'd put this in the top category, probably even with Taylor's Tenderness.

Pitch or key problems, lack of connection, over singing, etc. Songs I wouldn't keep for sure. I'll try to order from most liked to least liked.
Elliot's What You Won't Do For Love. The song isn't bad, it just has no 'hook'. There is nothing special. it's just a well sung song.
Kat's I Believe I Can Fly. Could have worked, but was oversung on the high notes especially.
Taylor's Dancin' in the Dark. It's in the wrong key as far as I can tell, and just doesn't work. The performance was great, but the song wasn't, it was the worst song of the night as a vocal and an arrangement.

I've been noticing, I wish we could vote today, after having had the night to think about the songs, and today to listen to Jen's links of them. I find that what I perceive as the best and worst changes when I am not seeing the performance, and I'm just listening to the purity of the vocal mixed with the arrangement, which definitely can kill the song sometimes. so, based on just listening, Elliot did the least to stay in, which isn't completely his fault, Open Arms was too short with a bad ending. With a better Open Arms, Elliot is basically even with Kat. Taylor is a mixed bag, 2 really good songs, one stinker, but he should stay since he's had the most good songs throughout, as well as last night.

Since Kat has Rainbow and Elliot doesn't have a song to match it's power and grace and beauty for the night, and the other songs they did were pretty comparable in long term likeability, Elliot would be odd man out. Though, if I wanted to consider what was wrong with a non keeper song, Kat should go because she over sang in parts, where Elliot was simply unremarkable, but mostly spot on. But considering the idea is to find a POP IDOL with this show, none of them fits that mold. Only Kat has "IDOL" like marketability, and you can sell her with sensuality and outfits and seduction etc., which is basically how most female singers are sold. Only a few ever get sold purely on vocals. And I think this is why Kat is likely to stay over Elliot. Elliot is nice and sweet and all, but he's ordinary. And ordinary isn't usually a good thing in a contest like this. I'm not sure most people listening understand technical singing, so he might be the most technically wonderful singer in the world, but if the audience doesn't understand singing well enough to pick out what is amazing, he sounds nice, not great.

I'm expecting to say good night Elliot, and the trend of going first on Top3 night continues, while the all girl 3rd place trend gets snapped finally.

Some of you really must hate Katherine. How can you call someone that you don't know, have only heard sing, and make a very few comments "narcissistic?" By those criteria, everyone on the show must be narcissistic. Oh, also, it smacks of sexism.

Well said. And you forgot jealousy too. She can't help it that she's beautiful and that she has never had to want for anything. I can't help but adore her and she almost made me bawl after she sang Somewhere Over The Rainbow. Her other two songs were good as well, but that song just bought her a ticket to the finale.

Oh, Kat Taylor finale, but I wish it were Elliott, Jenn.

It has nothing to do with sexism or jealousy. It has to do with the attitude that Katherine has displayed when the judges have had the gall to tell little miss perfect that she aint so perfect.

It is obvious that she had to have the silver spoin surgically removed from her mouth before she could sing. She has all the heart of Cruella.

You like her? You can have her.
I think she's a snob, and so does everyone else I know. Male and females.

Have your ice queen, but she won't win.

How does sexism come into play with Katharine???? People were saying the same things about Scott Savol last year.
I think her problem is that she has an amazing voice when she sings softly and understated, but she thinks that means she can sing absolutely anything she wants, which she cant. I've really only enjoyed two of her songs this whole season, Rainbow and Come Rain or Come Shine. The rest of them all sounded like a screechfest (Elvis night) or pale imitations of the real thing (Black Horse and the Cherry Tree)

I think if you listen for quality, that Elliott would be the one. I think that Taylor is an entertainer, but I don't think he voice is great, and without the action, I doubt that many would buy his songs. As for Kat, she gets the most applause when she is sitting down performing. Quite strange, I think. I would love for Elliott to get in the top two, but because of his teeth, I doubt he will. Too bad, America will be missing out on something special that is "natural beauty", and not purchased.

so now you are saying Kat is the result of plastic surgery, and not being a yound lady who simply isn't overweight? talk about negative attitudes of someone you don't know at all.

And she hasn't been snooby with the judges. When they critique her, she tries to have fun with it and not show it getting her down. She's deflecting the impact of what is said by laughing a little or making a wise crack. I do the same thing all the time, doesn't make me a silver spoon fed person. It just means I don't take rejection well and try to find ways to lessen it's impact at the moment, which is how I read Kat.

And did you not pay any attention to how she looked last week? She looked extremely dejected, figuring she'd blown it. And she was in shock after hearing she wasn't the one cut. And if you look at that pick of the Top3 Jen posted the next day, she's staring into a void. that's not conceit. that's mystified and shocked. I'd bet it was Friday at the earliest before the shock affect wore off and she started focusing on needing to get back into the competition mindset.

As for Elliot, he is a nice singer, but he isn't "there" yet. he is missing the "it" factor as Simon likes to say. Give him a year or two with Clive and company, and I suspect they'll find an 'it' for him. But right now he is only a technically good singer with nothing distinctive about how he sings. He's a much better singer than Taylor technically, but Taylor is better tonally (as in richness of voice, and connecting emotion with the audience) and has the performance experience to carry it off. Elliot is Jerry Rice in Dancing with Stars. He's progressed the most of anyone, but isn't the best. He needs more seasoning, like a fine wine :)

A: The terms used were (among others) "only a pretty face," "ice princess," "snobby," and "eye candy." These terms were used to describe the personality traits of a woman, not to point out the good or bad points of her vocal quality.

I don't this conversation is going to have a resolution, but I do have to comment about perception.

It's true that many people are perceiving Kat to be a bit of "snob". And they can perceive people any way they want. Doesn't make them right, but that's the danger anytime somebody's on camera. Kat's facial expressions in last week's results show were very telling. Personally, I think she was mad at herself for blowing her chance at continuing, then she was genuinely astonished to have survived. (Can't fake that.) But it's the little things that people pick up on that can make a lasting impression, and she's gonna need to rein that emotion in, start putting on a smile, fake if it has to be, if she's going to go into this industry where everything is superficial and based on image, rather than always truth.

I read an article here: http://www.broward.com/mld/miamiherald/entertainment/television/14596400.htm?source=rss&channel=miamiherald_television

and sent this e-mail in repsonse to the article.

You said, “Katharine was that standout, thanks to Judge Simon Cowell's choice for her, the Judy Garland signature tune, Over the Rainbow. The 21-year-old from Los Angeles offered a mostly quiet, elegant, Norah Jones-style version of the standard and looked resplendent while doing so.”

If you do not mind, I would like to correct you. Katharine tried to copy the Over the Rainbow version done by Eva Cassidy not Norah Jones. Tamyra Gray used Eva’s version back in Season #1 to similar accolades. IMO, no one does it better than Eva Cassidy (who by the way is no longer alive).

As far as I am concerned, when a judge chooses Over the Rainbow as a song choice for the female contestants it means “they need help getting to that place where they have that moment.” So the contestant can wow the audience and real them in so to speak. Simon was going for this effect with Katharine, because he knows that she has the potential but she was squandering all her chances throughout the competition with over singing everything. American Idol wants Katharine around for ratings so they sent Simon to the rescue with the obligatory Over the Rainbow.

Sure, the contestant needs to be up for the task, and if he or she is then, having the opportunity to sing that song is, well, a “freebie”. It is one of the most beautiful, sweetest, elegant songs and it carries with it such wonderful calming connotations’. How can you not fall in love with the moment and the voice? Granted, Katharine is dreamy, but she is not as dreamy as everyone thinks. She is a goofy 21-year-old girl who happens to look super hot with extensions, tons of make up, hours of coiffing and the proper lighting.

Do yourself a favor and check out the Eva Cassidy version of Over the Rainbow and then you will know what a true American Idol sounds like.

I will let you know if I hear back from the writer of the article.

response to the article:

I am aware of Eva Cassidy and have heard her version of the song and her other CDs. I'm not a big fan of Eva's. Talented, yes. But I find her bland. I cited Norah because Norah is better known to the masses and known for doing slow, elegant songs.
I'm not a fan of Katharine's either. It was a lovely performance of that one, overly familiar song, and the only performance of note last night. But she doesn't deserve the title Idol in my view. - by Howard Cohen from the Miami Herald.

---Yes, and people also point out that Elliot has crooked teeth, Taylor is too goofy to watch and similar comments about being only a pretty face were made about contestants like Ace, too, not just females. It's just a matter of people picking apart someone they don't like, not sexism. Sorry.

thing is , Elliot "does" have crooked teeth. That isn't a subjective comment, it is a factual statement. It's not trashing someone to mention a fact about them. But saying anyone is "only a pretty face" is an intended insult to that person, or possibly in this case, those voting for him/her. By your definition, I could say I don't like Taylor for having gray hair, and you'd think that was an insult. But he has gray hair. Elliot has crooked teeth, Kat is friggin' beautiful, none of them can help that. Kat doesn't have a perfect body, but there aren't any glaring visual issues except one, she smiles too much when singing. THAT is her 'crooked teeth' imperfection.

That NY chick who I thankfully have forgotten until now, she was snooby, arrogant, annoying, you name it. And conceited beyond belief. I'd have shot my TV had she been voted to move on. yikes.
