something about a funky renegade horse on broadway...

We can count them now on one hand, the five who are still standing. And the five who are still standing were doubling up on performances, with two chances to wow us by reaching back into the year they were born and then glancing back over the current charts.

And they did it in under an hour.

Whew.

I would grade this episode an A, like Standards night, but it wasn't totally icky, like the last time they put their grubby little fingers on the current charts. But with paisley shirts, writhing on the floor, and running to and then from Ryan inexplicably it could be called one of those wild nights. There were only a few clunkers, a couple of great ones, but mostly just what we would expect from this crop of kids.

But anyway, here they are, subject to review and revision and, as always, from worst to first.

Paris Bennett (Kiss). She says she wants to show off how young she is with a song that "most people can't turn into a song." That should have been Paris' first clue. She does display more energy and youthful enthusiasm than we've seen from her in awhile. Randy gives faint praise, Paula pouts that it's not a 50s love song, and Simon calls it screechy and annoying. Simon is generous.

Katharine McPhee (Against All Odds). Wearing a self-described "trash bag" to guard against wardrobe malfunctions, she decides this week to tell everybody to "take a good look at her now." [Okay, stop it. Couldn't help myself.] Simon tells her the song was a mess and promises not to apologize after the fact. I didn't think that after the 839 times this song has been performed on the Idol stage that anyone could destroy it. I was wrong.

Chris Daughtry (I Dare You). Okay, so I am not a fan of the staring, surly, screaming Chris, and this song does nothing to change my mind. Randy and Simon tell him his voice is on its last tonsil. Chris says he's pushed himself too hard. Well stop doing that Chris, because that was really bad.

Elliott Yamin (On Broadway). Randy and Paula tell him that the front of this performance was a little rough. It was more than a little rough, actually, but his confidence and stage delivery of one of the more upbeat tunes he's performed this season is what caught my attention. Simon tells him he's lucky he's got two songs. I think his ending saved the performance, so while Simon is right, it wasn't his best, but it was not the worst tonight.

Paris Bennett (Be Without You). Now I'm no fan of Mary J. Blige, and I admit I've never heard this song, and while I wouldn't purchase a copy, after Paris' opening performance, anything had to be better. Randy gives it a meh. Paula gives it a meh. Simon tells Princess P that she did quite well. And it finally dawned on me: Paris sounds like she has a terminal cold when she speaks.

Elliott Yamin (Home). I had never heard this until today. And he performs it perfectly for him, simply, uncomplicated and unadorned, sitting on a stool. Randy and Paula both give thumbs up, after they chase down Elliott who has run from the scene (going home, perhaps?) Simon questions the wisdom of singing a song about wanting to go home, (that's why somebody should've chosen Bad Day), and lights a fire under the fingers of every E fan out there by expressing concern about Elliott and going home.

Taylor Hicks (Play that Funky Music). I say Taylor wins, just on the shirt alone. He is the Taylor we know, thrashing about and leaving it all on the stage. And the audience. And the stage again, ending up dying, just like it says in the song. I speculated that this song, played for the fun it's supposed to be played with, would bring thousands of people to their feet. I don't know about thousands, but it did me. Simon hated it. That makes it all the better.

Katharine McPhee (Black Horse and a Cherry Tree). Again, I hadn't heard this song until I found out that she had chosen it, and it was an acquired taste for me, but I really liked it, and I really liked Katharine's take on it, possibly better than most anything she's done this season. But I still don't get the floor imagery. Judges liked it too. I like when we agree.

Chris Daughtry (Renegade). Okay pelt me, but I like Styx. And I really liked Chris doing Styx. And how nice it was that the judges actually agreed with me. I'd say that was his best performance in weeks.

Taylor Hicks (Something). Okay, in the spirit of full disclosure, I love this song beyond all reason, and how nice it was to enjoy Taylor singing a tender ballad that he has chosen rather than one of those he was forced to deal with. Even Simon had to concede that he really does have a terrific voice. With or without a paisley shirt.

So. There you have it. Those are mine. What are yours.

Now get on those phones!

Oh...and I almost forgot. I'm going to base my bottom two on only tonight's performances, ignoring the huge voting blocs out there and how they might react.

Bottom two: Paris and Elliott.
Going home: So long, Princess P.

Didn't Scott Savol sing "On Broadway" last year (and well) the week he went home?
I thought all did well...I love the song "Kiss" and thought Paris did it some justice...
But if forced to choose - keep Taylor and Chris, then let the chips fall where they may...
Well, and keep Elliott...and Paris...and Kat...

i did get on the phones. voted for taylor and elliot, i won't stand to let them go before paris.
while i thought katherine's performance with black horse and a cherry tree was good, it slightly bored me. it was pretty good though.
and i'm glad we got the chris daughtry back from when i started liking him with "wanted dead or alive." that was when i first realized how good he was, and i think for the past couple weeks, he's taken his "the chosen one" claim to fame too cockily (is that even a word?) in any case, he did great, and it was an awesome song choice.
but even awesome-er (i'm makin up these words as i go lol) was taylor's song choice of "something." and i'm glad that simon could actually take taylor seriously. i think taylor actually has an advantage with his bubbly personality, contrary to what simon thinks. with taylor's personality, you just grow to love him, no matter what he does.
and my brother is a chris daughtry fanatic, so i always end up hearing about how great he is, whether or not his performance was that for the streets or stage worthy. this time, i can actually agree with him, though not much can be said about his second song...
paris, i just want her to go. i'm with you on that one, jennifer. the bottom two will be tough to decide, since i pretty much loathe her, but to my dismay i think its going to be elliot and paris.
hopefully paris shall be the one having a bad day and elliot will not have to repeat the words "i wanna go home" ever again.

not fair. taylor sang a song from 30 years ago, it was good but he should've done something newer, imo. I think Elliot should go home, his performances were just too boring.

Jennifer, I think I completely agree with you this week. I guess since Katharine popped a button last week, they decided to put her in a straight jacket, complete with belts this week. I didn't get the floor routine either, but I'm still in love with those eyes.
Roll on Taylor Hicks, roll on...Funky White Boy!!! Paris is probably heading to the tour rehearsal studio after tomorrow night. I don't know if Chris' voice will handle much more of this competition. Elliot has got to get back in the game or it will be a Taylor v. Kat final.

ACK! The Clark-o-Meter! She was bad, but THAT bad? Hmm. I'll get back to ya on that one.

And yes, Scotty the Body performed On Broadway last year during F5, and did quite well, actually, but not well enough to save his butt.

And Elliott did not have an Elliott night, unfortunately, which might just kick his voters into even HIGHER gear.

I love Elliot and the On Broadway song, but wish he would have sung something different. Kats first song sucked really bad, wanted to cringe on each note, the second was much better. Don't know why she had to sit on the floor to sing it(never figured out why Fantasia had to sit on the floor either. Liked Chris's first song, although i'm not a fan of his, I think everything sounds the same, the second make me want to plug my ears. Liked Taylors first song too, wasn't crazy about the second, he makes me nervous to watch him sing, looks like he's spazzing out. Paris needs to go, didn't care for either of her songs. Don't know why everyone gets down on Simon about his critiques, he's usually right! I know I don't like it when he says bad stuff about the singers I don't want to leave, but when I listen good, he's usually right on. Paula and Randy need to quit telling him he's wrong, they had their say, they sould let him have his. I always dread Wed.night, I don't want to see Elliot go home. Have a good one!! GO ELLIOT!!!!

Hi Nettie!!

Actually Fantasia sitting on the floor made perfect sense if you know the play the song came from. Maybe KT sits on the ground in her video. I don't know. Maybe Kat wanted to show off her toenails? LOL

WOW! The judges were cruel with Elliott! I really liked his performances!

Funny story...

One day (two weeks ago)I was coming back home and I was thinking about song choises I would pick if I were in AI (just for fun :) ) and this amazing, sweet song started playing in the radio and I thought "This is a very good choice! I would sing that!" and then a sentence in this song made me change my mind... "Let me go hoooooome"! That's right! It was "Home"! :)

But it was so beautiful... ;`)
I can't say it was a bad choice!

OK..Taylor's performances were very entertaining but his Beatles pick was one I had thought for him weeks ago. Joe Cocker performed that too and Taylor is a polished young Joe Cocker in many ways....hated Paris's choices, thought El's 1st performance was boring but he did a good job with the 2nd song which I happen to like. Kat's 2nd was good 1st was terribly done. Liked Chris' 1st. Seems no one gave 2 great performances or made 2 great song choices. I think Paris will be bidding us adieu. Tonight I called on the land line and text messaged as well. Wanted to make sure my top 3 were still here next week.

Taylor hit it on both songs, and Funky White Boy was just perfect for him.

Chris doing Styx was good, even if Chris can't match the original. It was up tempo and enjoyable.

Kat Kat Kat, everyone, don't pick a song from the other gender, sheesh. It just doesn't work. 2nd song was a blast. The knees thing was odd, but the box drums, the beat, the rhythm, it was just a fun song. Fun songs go a long way, anything not to bore the audience :)

Elliot was enjoyable, though a little mellow. He definitely has the best vocals, just not the best personality. Might end up in 4th

Paris, ugh. Don't sing a guy song, especially someone as stylized and unique as Prince. wow, that just didn't work. I think I'd rather hear nails on a chalkboard to that song. Song 2 I don't know, wasn't terrible, but by that time, I can't take her voice anymore, too Minnie Mouse. She needs to go, just not up to par with the others.

After last week, with Kat and Chris topping the votes, I think Chris did enough to stay in the top 3, not sure if the screaming will put him in the top 2. Taylor I think should be the top vote getter tonight, his performances were the best of the night (though Chris's first song was right there with FWB). Kat is the best girl left, would not be surprised if that alone keeps her in the top 2 this week.

Elliot needs to bring up the tempo or really hit the perfect songs, because he's just not as entertaining, and he'll need to fix that for next week.

Paris has been skirting by for weeks, time for her to go. Get it right America.

Hey all... it's so great to see all the different opinions on here... Overall I think it was a pretty good show, not my favorite and by far not my least favorite. Paula seems to have only taken her sedatives tonight, which was good...

Elliot - Elliot is my favorite, but I was kind of unimpressed with either of his songs tonight. "Broadway" was good at the end, but I just thought that "Home" somg was boring. I still hope he wins, though.

Paris - This girl has a terrific voice and I would not mind seeing her stay. I think "Kiss" was great, it's nice to see someone do Prince rather than all the other artist's that have been performed a MILLION times. The second song, I hated, but she sang it pretty well. Here is what I am SICK AND TIRED of hearing about Paris. "She's got a famous family, she will do fine if she goes home, she doesn't need to be here". PEOPLE, SHE IS ON AMERICAN IDOL. Deal with it. Who cares if her family is famous? Please vote for her singing ability (or lack of ability, however you see it) and SHUT UP about her not needing this show.

Chris - The first song was really good, it kept making me think of Billy Madison, though. Second song... not as good. I think Chris is a tremendous singer, but to me, he has pretty much no charisma. I really wouldn't care if he went home. But he won't. He'll win it all for 2 reasons.

1. He has a great voice.

2. I have never liked the winner the best.

Katharine - What an odd attitude this girl has. I think she looked super-hot tonight, both songs. The first song was Boring and not sung well at all. The second was good but that floor thing? Weird.

Taylor - Oh my gosh, who were the judges watching while Taylor was doing his first song?!?!? They were all down on him, but that was a stellar performance!!! His outfit was great!! Did anyone see those shoes, just awesome. And he sang the song perfect and was having so much fun with it that I almost got up and danced. For me, the best performance of the night. Second best performance of the night?? Taylor's second song. Something has got to be one of my (and probably everyone's) favorite songs, and he did a great job with it. Taylor stole the show tonight AND had the pimp spot. He is SO not getting off the couch tomorrow night.

So those are my thoughts.

Bottom 2:

Who I want: Chris and Katharine

Who will: Paris and Elliot

Who goes home: Paris

I definitely agree with Simon after he said that tonight was a very erratic night. It was a strange episode, but still very good. I was pleasantly surprised to here a song by the Beatles (my favorite band of all time) and a song by Styx (in my top 10) tonight. I was away for 2 days so I didn't get any news of spoilers. I still voted for Kat because she's my girl!

Short comment for me tonight, but as usual, great job Jennifer! Can't wait until tomorrow!

P.S.~ PARIS DARLING: goodbye, adios, arrivederci, auf wiedersehen, au revoir, cheerio, sayonara, see ya later, you are no longer needed here, hasta la vista baby!!!

I could not make myself vote tonight. I LOVE Elliott, but his performances tonight were just “okay.”

For some reason Elliott reminded me of the 1987 movie “Broadcast News.” Ever see that movie? Albert Brook’s character “Aaron” was the very epitome of Elliott tonight. A most deserving person, a better educated and more talented person then William Hurt’s “Tom.”

In the movie Brook’s “Aaron” character had more education, talent and skill and SHOULD have won the job…but still it wasn’t enough to stave off Hurt’s simple, one dimensional “Tom.”

Tom’s one and only skill was to know how to play to the camera. And in the end Tom won the job.

Cynically yours, Tami

This is not going to be a popular observation, but for anyone who ever heard the original On Broadway done, the E version pales in comparison, it's as simple as that. That said, I like Elliot, hope he makes it into the top 3 all male finals, but I doubt it will happen.

Katherine has T & A and every hormone seething young male out there will vote for her. Even if she was absolutely terrible. Which she was. Did I mention snooty?

Paris is out of her element here, and should rely on grandma to open doors. Period. Bye Bye Paris

Chris reminds me of a cobra, with that beady eyed stare, I find that same expression he uses, week in and week out, as he screams his songs... well, downright creepy. Does he ever smile? Could he have gas?

The ONLY one that has not taken himself too seriously, and has brought new and refreshing LIFE to this show (that's becoming a joke of itself real quick) is Taylor. If it weren't for him, and his feel-good sound and demeanor, I would have given up weeks ago when Mandisa got the boot before Bucky did.

I DIG THAT FUNKY WHITE BOY

Hey idolbrain...I know the original George Benson "On Broadway" song quite well, and still thought that Elliot did a fantastic job of it! Above and beyond Scotty Savol's version of it (and I thought *he* did a pretty decent job of it). The bottom line is that there's a reason why any of the contestants' versions pale in comparison to the originals... THEY'RE AMATEURS! Plain and simple. They've not yet "arrived." Their times will come, but they're all so young and have so much yet to learn.

From worst to first:

Paris - "Kiss" It's a mistake for anyone to even attempt Prince. I don't care how good you are. This, to me, was akin to Queen week. Blech!

Katherine - "Against All Odds" One of my favorite songs from the year I graduated high-school. Even my husband (who's a KatFan) didn't like this one on her. Pitchy...whiny...icky!!

Chris - "I Dare You" This is the first time I've not liked my boy. I love rock music and have always thought Chris ROCKS! But, now I know what everyone means about his screaming. No wonder he's losing his voice. Honey, didn't Bocelli teach you last week about singing from the diaphragm?!

Elliot - "Home" I love the song when Michael Bublé sings it, but it was just too mellow for me tonight. Even so, I love E's voice and hope he wins.

Paris - "Be Without You" I'm not a fan of Mary J. Blige nor this genre of music. However, Paris did a decent job of it.

Katherine - "Black Horse and the Cherry Tree" I love Tunstall's song so much that it was hard for me to hear anyone else sing it. If I'd never heard the original, I'd have loved Kat's performance. Still, good vocals...but I didn't get all the crawling around on the ground business.

Elliot - "On Broadway" I know everyone else didn't like this on him, but I did! I love his voice, love his runs, love his style, love his personality. I should change my nic to EJams!

Chris - "Renegade" I'm a huge Styx fan and just loved this on Chris! The boy can ROCK! This is why I like him so much. He's cool and hot at the same time.

Now, as much as I love Chris and Elliot, the night belonged to Taylor!

Taylor - "Something" Love this song! It was nice to hear him just sing but throw a little scratchy scream in now and then. Digging the suits, too!

Taylor - "Funky White Boy" When he said he was singing a song by Wild Cherry, I said to myself, "Oh! Oh, PLEEEEEASE let it be FWB!" He brought the house down!!!! He has boundless energy and personality and I just LOVE IT when he leaves it all on the stage! Way to go, T-man!

Who I Want: Paris and Kat
Who Should: Paris and Chris
Who Will: Paris and Elliot
Going Home: Paris

Things that stuck out in my head from last night..

I thought Paris was pretty good. Kiss was a brave choice, and I thought it was fine. And her second song, I actually thought she did a really good job with it. For the record, I can't stand Paris.

Chris has been my favorite from the get go, but in his second song, I was wondering what all the screaming was about.

Taylor had me laughing my ass off. He's a performer, that's for sure.

Katherine's first song sucked the big one, but the second song I very much enjoyed. It was nice to hear her sing something that wasn't a ballad.

Elliot singing Buble was great. I really liked his voice.

My wishfull thinking list of who's leaving now and in what order..

Paris
Katherine
Taylor
Elliot
Chris

Is Clive Davis night just songs he gets to choice?

Clive should choose one song for each of the final three. The judges then choose one song and the contestant chooses a song of their own.

Jennifer, I've been looking for days for a decent AI blog -- thanks. I don't disagree at all with your thoughts about Elliott's performance of "Home" -- simple, uncomplicated, etc.

It may have been a bit "ballsy" to do such an understated song. It doesn't have the "wow" factor and I'm sure some were bored. But it really worked for me. Elliott's well-crafted, intimate delivery of this song, with simple melody and everyday lyrics, really connected in conveying a simple, universal emotion. He was thoughtful in keeping the cover on his voice, as I'm sure it was tempting to sing out a little more in places -- but he kept it close (except the last couple of notes, which I think was a mistake). It was almost as if he was thinking it, not singing it. His thoughtful interpretation and masterful delivery wasn't designed to blow anyone's socks off, but to communicate in a beautiful way this familiar emotion of longing.

If Elliott leaves the show 5/3 or 5/10 -- that's okay. He's gotten some exposure and confidence out of the show. He can rely on his voice and talent to take him where he wants to go. Geez, I'm getting all sappy and stuff...

Taylor, you go boy!! Play that funky music. Yeah! Woooo!

I want Taylor and Elliott in the bottom two, but I agree, Paris and Elliott will be, only for the fact that Taylor has a huge fan base...somewhere....or maybe Tay will fall, and be scared out of his mind coming that close to going, that he actually starts singing songs that will sell records, if he wins.

I would buy Taylor's CD for my Dad...Elliott's for my Poppy....Kat for me :), Chris for my husband and I don't know anyone who would listen to Paris...my 11 year old can't stand her so she's out.

Elliot's On Broadway was too cheesy for my tastes, but still rates better than Kat's "Against the Odds" (Blechh...) and Paris' "Kiss" (ehh). I wouldn't rate Taylor's "Something" as the best of the night - I'd move it to 3rd and slide the next two up - I'd buy a copy of Chris' "Renegade".

I think it's Paris turn to go and I expect Elliot to follow. The thing with Elliot is that I'd like hime better with the video off. Too many of his songs - such as Broadway last night - *look* (in his mannerisms and delivery) like a bad lounge act - but sound great. And I find that to be grating.

I love, love, loved Chris' rendition of "Renegade" last night! For me, it was one of his better performances. I also like Taylor's "Something", and "Play that Funky Music" was incredibly fun to watch.

I am and will always be an Elliott fan. I agree that his performances were much more mellow than usual, but I still liked them.

As for Katharine, I liked her second song better than the first. Isn't there some way to get "Against All Odds" banned from the AI catalog? Haven't we heard it enough to finally put it out of its misery? I thought "Black Horse and a Cherry Tree" was an odd choice for her, but she did well on it vocally.

And Paris...sweetie, don't try to sing Prince. Not him, not that song. I wasn't crazy about it (or her delivery of it) at all. Her second was better; she did a decent cover of Mary J. Blige. It fit her voice better. But I still think she'll be on the seal and singing for us again tonight.

WHy is everyone so against the floor scene? I thought it was great. Must just be me, my hubby, my father and mother and my daughter that thought it was "kewl". It was briliant infact, and I'll say it again, the best vocal performance of the night, sitting or standing.

Now remember, I want Chris to win it all so I'm not favoring Kat.

In general, I don't have a problem with floor performances. Fantasia made the perfect choice to sing "Summertime" in a sitting position. It made sense with the song because of the musical it comes from.

As for Kat, there was no point in her being on the floor like that. It was spastic and distracting! It reminded me of an over-excited kid watching cartoons who has to pee real bad. She's gotta go but doesn't want to miss Sponge Bob's next adventure!

Revisionism? The Drifters originated "On Broadway", Benson wasn't even close and Elliot couldn't carry the Drifter's shoes. Wake up! These amateurs may be nice kids, but DO NOT ATTEMPT to compare Elliot Yamin with the Drifters on their WORST day.

Geez, the younger generation.....

You know Jennifer I would prefer to hear Elliott sing "I Can't Help Falling in Love with You".......I might swoon. :)
