1 hour, 4 kids, 6 songs?...

Well, if true, this would be yet another in a long line of twists, turns, switches and changes that the new producing staff have inflicted on the eighth season.

But it could also be kinda fun.

Because with an additional yappy judge, and because the show has become more about them than about the contestants, and because the director/producers can't keep enough control to keep the show within its alloted time, we got gypped out of two performances from each of the final five.

The solution for final four week? Give the kids one solo and then pair them for a couple of duets? Seems
that's the rumor.

Sounds credible enough. Even enjoyable enough. But it's still pathetic that what has worked so successfully in past seasons has seemed so impossible to manage by this new format.

Your thoughts?

I think the real problem with the time, besides the four judges, is that they're selling way too many commercials - because they can. They'd rather make money than have more show material. There was always filler before and it worked fine, so it's not the filler that's taking up too much time....

I'm thinking I don't like the idea of duets at this point. Just cut out the drivel and let them sing 2 each, or extend the show 30 minutes, sheesh.

Part of me hates this idea and the other part loves it! Oh the possible train wrecks! I miss Nigel. He ran a tight ship.

I've said for a couple of seasons that a "duets" night would be a good idea.

Part of the problem is the extra yappage from the 4th (and superflous) judge. Our anonymous friend with the first comment hit the nail on the head; the real problem is all the product placement and the incessant commercial breaks.

Remember when there were two performances between commercials? Now that there is a break between each of the singers, it cuts into the show's over all time.

Last week, Kris was announced as going first at 8:05 and then Seacrest sent the show to break. The show didn't come back until 8:10, meaning that they wasted 5 good minutes on advertisements.

I think someone should file a restraining order against Idol trying to perpetrate the show as a "singing competition" until such a time that there is more actual singing.

I agree that commercials eat away more time than Kara does as a fourth voice, but I agree with JesseJames that if they're going to make that much extra money, then why not extend the show to 90 minutes, rather than just tear it down altogether.

Fox likes to use Idol as a lead-in to shows that need a boost.

It worked for 24, Bones and now Fringe. Hell, even Stacked was once shown after Idol and got a significant ratings bounce out of it.

Unless Fox suddenly wants to start a string of 30 minute shows to fill the gap between Idol and the local news, all the shows at this point are going to be in the 60-62 minute range.

I read an article that Kara only signed a 1 year contract and that she may not be back. When Simon was asked he said he has no control over whether they bring her back, but it is written in his contract that he has say so in Randy and Paula and won't do the show with out those two. I think that spells the end for Kara! Yippee

I hope they've figured out that four judges are too many, since you know they won't cut the commercials.

They need to get rid of Kara! I'm not a huge Paula fan, but I'll take her over Kara.

Duets will be interesting.

I have not heard a single song yet this year and thought to myself "God I love that song"
They do not sing anything put out in the last few years and if they are going to do older music, I wish they would do like "Viet Nam Era" - Just like every other year, I think given the right songs this group could have done alot better.

Omg..if thats true about Adam..thats so sad and heartbreaking to hear.My heart goes
out to David and the rest of the
family.

On the idea of duets..im against
them altogether.Maybe last year
before most of the females were voted off it might have worked, but i dont like the idea of anyone doing a duet with Allison, cept maybe Adam. And two guys dueting just doesnt do it for me,lol

I too wish Kara was gone. This has
been the weirdest season of Idol ever and i dont like any of the
changes.Im almost to the point where i am done with the show for
real.
