no more downloads please...

Top downloads night kinda provided something for everyone. Some of the kids selected recent hits, some chose adult contemporary songs and a few reached back into the archives for some golden oldies.

And some were good, some not so good and others were simply present. In other words, I'm glad I watched the show on TiVo and chose to go to bed last night instead.

So here they are, my thoughts for what they're worth, and listed from worst to first:

Megan Joy (Turn Your Lights Down Low). I'm sorry, but I can't for the life of me figure out why Megan is still in this competition when Alexis Grace is watching from her living room. I just can't.

Anoop Desai (Caught Up). I appreciate that Anoop took a break from ballad-land this week, and this performance was nowhere near Beat It level, but despite a decent vocal, his attempt at imitating Usher just didn't work for me.

Lil Rounds (I Surrender). She's trying too hard. She says in her taped piece that she's finally chosen the right song. Wrong. Just like last week, she's flat all over the place and seems so desperate to hit those power notes that it came off more like screeching than singing. But the little bit at the end, as Lil is wiping her tears after getting bruised by the judges, with the Lil kids was cute.

Matt Giraud (You Found Me). We finally found Matt, oddly sitting at the keyboard in the middle of the mosh pit. That was awkward. Also awkward was this performance, right from the start, and while it got somewhat better as the song went on, might spell trouble for the guy on results night. Maybe they can place the bad stools in the mosh pit.

Danny Gokey (What Hurts the Most). While this performance was better than last week's, I just don't get the judges. He delivered the song well emotionally, but it just seemed strident and, at times, borderline screaming.

Scott MacIntyre (Just the Way You Are). Simon was right that this was Scott's best performance to date. I actually didn't hit the FFW button. I loved that the band took a breather and left just Scott with his piano, but as much as I enjoyed it, he's still so outclassed in this group. I think he bought himself some time, but not much.

Adam Lambert (Play that Funky Music). I am still lurving the hair and scaled back makeup. What an odd choice for Adam to sing, but the judges were right that it was an awesome arrangement, delivered flawlessly like we've come to expect from Adam. But I still don't like the song.

Allison Iraheta (Don't Speak). Yes, she looked like a Bratz doll on crack, but I loved the addition of the guitar, I loved the vulnerability at the front of the song, she didn't miss a note, even though she had a minor botch of the lyrics. I love this girl to death. (She's 16.)

Kris Allen (Ain't No Sunshine). Holy piano. I wasn't too thrilled when I heard he had chosen this song, because it's one of those songs that has a shrine in my heart, and I don't much like people touching my shrine. But this was the jewel of the night, appropriately put into the pimp spot. Kris just keeps peaking and, as Simon noted correctly, brings more confidence to the stage each week. This was FAB.

So there are my thoughts. Feel free to add yours.

Now the tough part, because I did glance at dialidol.com.

Who should: Lil, Megan, Anoop
Who I want: Lil, Megan, Chris Scott
Who will: Megan, Anoop, Matt

And I'm going out on a limb to say that Megan will be forced to "sing for her life", we will be forced to listen again and she and her tattooed arm will wave farewell by the end of the hour tonight.

See you then.

A bit off topic but, was that Brandon Rogers singing backup last night for Anoop's song?

LOL yes. I don't know why I consistently want to call Scott Chris. I've caught myself so many times. I'll fix that.

I wonder if for some reason he reminds you of Chris Richardson from Season Six :-) It can't be either Chris Sligh or Chris Daughtry!! Let's hope he doesn't stay around as long as Richardson did!! Although Chris R didn't have the same kind of competition that Scott does this year!!

Good commentary - I thought "who cares" what Allison wore? - She's a child who can sing wonderfully! She can wear whatever she wants.
I too cringed when I heard what Kris was singing. It always reminds me of being very young and the Hager Brothers singing that song on Hee Haw - But he was very good - and I hope too that Megan is singing for her life tonight - They certainly won't save her.

Megan: Why does your voice sound like dat? And why are you still in this competition?

Anoop: I love you, man but this ain't karaoke and you just can't pretend to be Usher!

Lil: Chill baby chill. You are much too good to be on a downward spiral.

Matt: I love you too, man but like the judges said, just because it's a good song doesn't mean it's a good song for you to sing.

Danny: I really don't know why you were ever a frontrunner or better yet, why you got so much praise for your performance last night but it ain't working for me dawg.

Scott: I'm getting really bored with you.

Adam: You're not my favorite but at least you are exciting to watch. Just tone down the screeching a bit.

Alison: I really hated your wardrobe and it wasn't your best performance but you still rock my world.

Kris: What a big surprise you've been. You just can't do no wrong.

I don't get the Adam phenom. Really, he's just so ugh. Blake was WAY more creative.

What I'd like to know is why did they stay so safe. I applaud Anoop and Matt for at least doing a song from the last 2 years. Even Allison, who I love, picked No Doubt, which has been done on the show. This is the first chance to really do something different and they choose Celine Dion, Billy Joel?

Lil Rounds needs to go home. She's good and she'll get a deal, but she's not the American Idol.

They're all but handing it to Adam.

I'm so proud of Kris for representing Arkansas so well! Yay!

Love the "bratz doll on crack" comment (ha!) - also, she looked like Pebbles Flintstone on crack!

Adam is in a league all his own - really, too good to be on this show. BUT, his song choice was weird last night.

I have a funny feeling Matt will be the last one - but the judges will give him a save. Matt needs to get a clue that he CANNOT sing songs by Coldplay, the Fray, and the like, no matter HOW much he likes that kind of music.

I think Kris is a nice guy, but I don't think he's pop star material. I don't understand why the judges are always slurping Gokey and Lil, and despite all of the talent he has, I just don't "get" Adam.

Allison is my fave right now and I think she is developing a real chance to win.

Do you think we'll get lucky and Megan will leave? She's got the VFTW voting for her and she just may last another week. I hope not!

Well, hello all! I haven't posted recently because when they changed from analog to digital, we lost reception for FOX. (We don't have cable, DTV or Dish, in case you're wondering. And the box thingy with an antenna just doesn't cut it.) Anyhoooo... I've been watching AI days after the fact, and feel completely irrelevant posting here. But I have some pretty strong opinions about "Download Night," and just wanted to weigh in.

First things first: Jennifer, that "Bratz doll on crack" comment was priceless! lol Good thing I wasn't drinking anything when reading that. hehehe

Second, here are my picks, worst to first:

Megan Joy: I echo word-for-word what you said, Jennifer. Yeeesh! That was painful!

Matt Giraud: I can't stand the Fray, I can't stand this song in particular, and I hated Matt's performance. He needs to reign it in and figure out who he is as an artist. He's too inconsistent. But he's cute and will probably ride that train for another couple weeks. Maybe he should pull a Haley Scarnato and wear some ultra-mini-short-shorts to show off a bit of leg. Ermmm...maybe not.

Anoop Desai: Hated the song on him, but he still can sing. I wish he'd stop trying to be so hip. It doesn't work. As much as I like him (in particular as a balladeer), I wouldn't buy a cd of his. He's too generic for me.

Lil Rounds: I'm kinda done with her. I love her personality...so poised and respectful...but this isn't a Miss Congeniality contest. The truth is, I don't think she's that great of a singer. She keeps picking the wrong song, doesn't do anything unique with them, and like this week, she tends to go flat when she pushes it. I was very disappointed in her.

Scott MacIntyre: The only reason he's here is because the rest of the group really sucked! It's one of my all-time favorite Billy Joel songs, so I wasn't thrilled Scott was doing it. But at least he interpreted the song well....albeit with a so-so voice. He never should have made it into the top 12. He's completely out of his league. But, like the judges said, it really was his best performance to date.

The next 3 were all lumped into the number 2 spot for me. I like them all for different reasons (as very different as they are), and I liked their performances equally.

Danny Gokey: Almost made me cry. I simply love his voice and will buy his cd.

Adam Lambert: He totally amuses me! Like Kara, I can't wait for the next week to roll around to see what he'll do next. He's exciting to *watch.* And that's the reason I *won't* buy his cd. As much as I love this guy, and as much of a fab-o singer he is, he's a VISUAL performer for me. I can't imagine listening to a cd of him. BUT, he had a great performance this week! (As usual.)

Allison Iraheta: She's just solid. She knows who she is and brings it every time. I don't care WHAT she wears. I didn't find it distracting at all...because her vocals are so good that I don't even see the rest. She could win this. I would DEFINITELY buy her cd! ROCKIN'!

Kris Allen: WOW!!! Completely flawless. I was so blown away! He just gets better and better. By far the best of the night.
