casting the finale: a SIMULBLOG!...

It's been a long four months, but the end is in sight as we kick off the last remaining kid before launching into that extravaganza we call the finale.

Because THIS is American Idol.

And this is a SIMULBLOG, where I'm writing as I'm watching the feed on the east coast, publishing at every break, so if you don't want to know what's happening before it happens in your living room, this is not the place to be for the next 60 minutes.

Just be sure to stop back by later to celebrate or complain with the rest of us.

Homer Simpson kicks off the show in an improvement over Ryan, who reminds us that Elliott Yamin and Maroon 5 are in the house. We get the traditional highlight reel of last night's performances in the first five minutes before taking the first of the commercial breaks.

It's almost tour time, and we get a pretty cool promo with the top ten kids all remembered. (I had forgotten about some of them...)

Ryan sits on the sofa with the kids and lets Jordin talk about her trip home. And, of course, we get to see the highlights, always a fun time watching the kids get special treatment. And just in case anyone's forgotten that Jordin is 17, she reminds them, reacting every inch the teenager revisiting her high school.

Ryan gives Jordin her reviews from the night before before telling her she'll find out how America voted...later. Gee. Didn't see that one coming.

It's time for the always-challenging Idol Challenge. Pick A!

Time for Ryan and Blake on the sofa. And we get to see his hometown celebration, complete with limos, planes, screaming girls, baseball and a special dad, who knows the words to his son's songs as well as his son does.

Blake is joined on the stage by dad, before he's thrown off by Ryan. Blake is reminded of what the judges had to say the night before before being told to go wait it out with Jordin.

It's time for Elliott and his homecoming to the Idol stage with Wait for You.

It's the Ford Commercial, where the kids really are kids before climbing into the car. Very cute.

It's Melinda's turn to go home to Nashville. She got her own very special state day - not a city day - a state day. She shoulda lowered taxes. And she got her own street. Tennessee does things nicely.

She gets her reviews from the night before, and is sent to the waiting room.

It's too bad the hometown highlights were abbreviated, but, as is this season's custom, we must make room for visiting artists. Elliott gets a pass, cause he's a returning veteran.

Maroon 5 performs, and Blake is obviously itching to rush the stage and sing along. And obviously Paula is drinking again. hee.

This is going to be one of those results that really comes out of nowhere, because there is no clear indication of who is leaving.

The kids are on the seal.

Jordin is told to step forward and is told that almost 60 million votes have sent her through to the finale. She cries and hugs the other two. Her parents holler as the crowd stands.

Melinda is told to step forward. And she's told she's going home.

It's Blake and Jordin.

Wow.

She gets to see her funeral video to the sound of Daughtry and chooses to sing out to I'm a Woman.

So long Melinda!

I guess the producers realized they couldn't sell Melinda Doolittle CD's.

I still haven't finished reading the comments from last night so I won't say much, maybe add a little later in the night or tomorrow...

I honestly think the right 2 people are in the finale. I actually feel bad for Blake for not knowing how to react to Melinda being sent home. Did you notice though, that there really wasn't any shock pause of silence though? Nothing like the dead silence after Mandisa was sent home last season. Now between Jordin and Blake, I don't mind who wins this competition, a boring season is finally worth waiting for a fantastic end.

Satisfied person right here, more to say later!

Wow, this had to have been rigged.

Blake was an easy pick from the begninning to make the finale, and the obvious Jordin push started about 5 weeks ago.

Melinda got screwed.

At this point, both Blake and Jordin will have records...even good ol' Melinda.

I definitely want to see Jordin take the crown now. At the same time, I'm glad Blake is in the final, because it will be all the more entertaining. I really do think he's a great entertainer and a cool guy.

For a while, I had wanted a Jordin/Melinda final, it was the best result I could think of, but that was until Blake really showed up about three weeks ago (Bon Jovi Week). That's when I realized this guy had some unique stuff to offer. Before that, he was just flying under the radar for me.

It's going to be a great final.

...Don't worry about Melinda, she'll be just fine.

It's because she was boring. It's because she was boring. It's because she was boring. She had no Charisma.

Let me start off with saying, the Homer joke had the wrong punch line. I think it should have been "is it too late to vote for Sanjaya" not Fantasia :)

I know some are shocked at Melinda being gone, but honestly, logic dictates the finale will always be Boy / Girl unless there are extenuating circumstances. Look over the 6 seasons. Only 2 oddities, seasons 2 and 3, which were boy/boy and girl/girl.

Season 2, as good as Kimberly Locke was, she didn't have the Clay factor, and Ruben, I'm not really sure what his following was based on, since I didn't follow that season heavily. But those 2 had been such heavy favorites and were so over powering that year, that it was hard for the girls to get traction.

Season 3, George Huff was the man standing. Nuff said.

So, one has to stop thinking about it from their personal point of perspective, and consider the 60 million votes. When you have 2 girls with power voices, but otherwise not that distinguishable from each other (same singing styles, limited stage presence most of the time, not the most stylish dressers, etc.), they are going to fight for the same set of voters for the most part. Then you throw in a 3rd wheel who is a boy, he automatically gets 95+% of all the girl voters (by girl, I'm referring to teens, possibly up thru college age). Simply put, why would most young women and girls vote for another girl? Aren't they going to vote for the cute guy who is a slick dresser (seems to have a fashionable Seattle dress style, good pattern and color coordination, he should be on billboards selling those clothes along with albums), is closest of all the contestants to the current rave known as hip hop, sung the most contemporary songs that would be similar to what's on their IPods already, and like all girls, is the one of the three they would throw themselves at for a chance at a little backroom action, if you know what I mean. :P

also, if you consider Dial Idol results, Blake was only 2.5% behind Melinda if it was 100% accurate, and that doesn't count text votes. Of the three, which is likeliest to pull text voters? Blake. With Sanjaya gone, the little 13 year old crying girl would have been crying for Blake and texting her little fingers off, as would likely most all her friends. There's no teenager voting for Melinda. They don't vote for best singer, they vote for most popular just like when voting for class clowns, kings and queens, most popular, most likely this and that. My wild guess would be Blake probably hauled in over 50% of the text vote, with Melinda likely under 20%. That makes up for any amount of older, phone only adults who were voting for Melinda and Jordin. Likely, those people were splitting phone votes between the two, hence, almost no way for both to make it, since most of Blake's voters would be him only voters, not splitting their votes up as happened last year with Elliot and Taylor. You ladies did not what McPhee in but there just was not a way to vote enough for both Taylor and Elliot to get them both in the finale.

so, not having any hard evidence, just using common sense, reasoning, observation, track records of previous seasons, as well as watching people like Haley and Sanjaya and Jasmine survive much longer than they should have, I propose that tonight's result is exactly as should have been expected. The only question should have been which girl would go. I would have been more shocked had Blake not made it, as again, after 6 seasons, we can see the norm is for boy / girl finales.

now, onto a lighter topic. Jenn, Dori, sunshine, et al, what did ya'll think of Elliot with HAIR!!! WOW. And Dori, HE DIDN'T BREAK MY TV, HE WENT TO A DENTIST!! HAHA HE GOT SOME NICE NEW CHOPPERS, AND THEY LOOKED GREAT (though they did seem a little fake :D )

How did you ladies like his song? It's the type of singing I would expect from him, not anything overwhelmingly good to me, but then again, I'm an old school 80's rocker type. Hair bands and all that stuff haha.

Hi JJ, Happy Anniversary. I liked Elliotts hair, it could of been a little shorter, but hey thats show biz. He looks good. I liked his song, he has a pure voice. God I'm sounding like Paula. I should lay off the wine.

I thought it would be Jordin and Melinda in the finals, but Blake also has a lot to offer.

Blake is unique, he has his own style and is fun to watch. That's one of my problem with Blake. I know that sounds crazy, but last year Taylor was different, fun to watch and I loved his crazy dancing, but some singers are just more fun to watch then to listen to on CD's. I'm not sure if that will be Blake. Taylor should be in Vegas he'd own the place.

I always feel bad when someone leave. Melinda's vocals are great, but for me she just lacked that star quality. Sometimes she just didn't look comfortable on stage.

Jordin lights up the stage, she puts every thing into it. She is a beautiful person.

Jordin's vocals are better then Blakes, but he has that style anything can happen. I'm looking forward to the final.

Congratulations to Jordin & Blake ! I picked these two from the beginning and was thrilled to see they both made it to the finals.

Not that I think Melinda was bad. She definitely had the best voice, but she is tough to look at, poor her, not her fault,,, and she was BORING!

PEOPLE WANT TO BE ENTERTAINED !!!

Blake IS the entertainer this season. I don't think he was enough of himself last night however, and I was a bit disapppointed, but I'm happy to see he was voted through.

Jordin is a sweetie. Fantastic singer. A bit old for 17, but how remarkable is she? Wow, nice to see her acting like a teen at her high school.

I agree with what someone said earlier,, NOW it's a finale to watch. Anyone's game, and I don't care who wins, they both deserve it..

And yes, Melinda will have a contract too, just like Elliot !

Oh, BTW, I don't think for a second it was rigged. If word ever got out that something underhanded was done, the show would be pulled, and people are making way to much money with it to chance losing it. They are not that stupid !

Thanks for another great season Jennifer ! Always enjoy the comments.

Yesss! I am not surprised at all that Melinda went home. Just because you can sing on key doesn't make you an idol. She was just too boring for me. The top two kids are so enertaining- this is going to be a great finale! I have been rooting for Blake since his first audition. Jordin popped out of nowhere for me and I can't remember the exact week but I was thinking "Who is that? She's goooood". As much as I love Blake, I do think that Jordin should take the title. Blake will be just fine away from AI.

I've learned to enjoy Blake. Jordin has such a HUGE upside I can see her winning. Melinda is at the top of her game - she's not going to get any better. Go with the kids.

OT - there was a website I found last year where you could - *ahem* download various tracks from the show. Does anybody know if it still exists and, if so - the name?

Well, I'm sad Melinda is gone, but I'm very happy for Jordin and Blake. Mel will be fine, and may even benefit more (a la Daughtry) from not being in the final; this way she'll get to do the stuff *she* wants to do, rather than what the producers want.

Several people (most notably JJ, Happy Anniversary!) have made very good arguments about who could win and why. Personally, I think Jordin has the edge for mass appeal. But they're both so darn adorable, I say we declare a tie and give them both the crown and the $1 million!

By the way, JJ, I have Elliot's cd. I liked his live performance better than the recording. I forgot why I liked this kid so much. He absolutely squeezes out every ounce of emotion in his songs. You feel what he feels when he sings. I LOVE that! As for his hair, I preferred the short spiky do of yore. The mop he's sporting now accentuates the Keebler Elf in him. But, nice teeth! (even though I didn't care one whit what his teeth looked like before.)

To sum up, I think Jordin will take the crown, but I'll be just as happy if Blake does. :)

The full studio tracks are available for download at the main site. (Link in the sidebar.) It's worth the 99 cents for some of them.

Otherwise, if you want the actual performances, the best place is Rickey's, but you'll have to do some scrolling and searching.

I think America unoffically crowned Jordin AI6 last night. She will get the bulk of Melinda's voters because they are looking for vocal quality and Jordin is the stronger vocalist of the two. Had Blake gone home, I think Jordin would have benefited from his youth vote and beaten Melinda in the final. America has spoken, and said that they want a young, fresh, exciting face as their idol, and Melinda was the oldest, most boring face of the three.
So, congratulations to the three, and I know we will see all of their CD's in stores next year.

A little off topic, I was home yesterday from work and was switching around the channels and came across The Bold and Beautiful soap opera and was shocked to see that Constantine was in it (using his own name on top of that).. does anyone know if he's a regular on that or is just a walk in?.. He was pretty good with the acting by the way... you never know where the Idol kids will turn up...

I guess if we're talking "shocking" boots, Constantine is not off topic, LOL.

His role in B&B is being called a "summer storyline." So it seems to be short term. For now.

But B&B is also saying he's not the only former Idol to be showing up, but they're not saying who.

I guess being humble and nice is considered boring. That's pretty sad. It does work for people like Martina McBride though. I think Melinda would have been and hopefully still will be) a fantastic role model for lots of people--just what I think AI stands for. And I don't think she's ugly at all--come on, what a double standard. Reuben? Elliott? What a letdown. Blake schmake. I'm sick of his schtick.

I hated to see Melinda go, but I have no doubt that she'll get a record deal. Her voice is amazing, even if she doesn't have Jordin's "youthful" vibe.

And you know, maybe part of the reason she didn't get through to the finale is that people automatically assumed she was safe (as with Daughtry), or else that she just didn't need Idol anymore and would get a record deal anyway. Who can tell?

I'm very happy for Blake & Jordin. I think it's going to be one heck of a finale.

I can't believe he has survived. This season is unpredictable enough that you never know-- he could pull off a win.

Melinda was robbed by the teenyboppers who are the vast majority of voters, and they have no taste in music.
Melinda was definitely the best singer, performer and entertainer. She was in no way boring. She knew how to sell a song, and sell it with style and quality, something today's youth no nothing about. Quality is not in their vocabulary...only who's popular.
I have no doubt she will become a success, and doesn't need to win, but she should have. Look at the crap singers that are out there. If THEY can be successful, surely someone with talent above and beyond the norm, like Melinda, can find her niche among those who can appreciate quality.
The common, everyday, run of the mill singers will still have their common, everyday, run of the mill audience, but those of us who appreciate REAL talent and quality, professional entertainment can rely on singers like Melinda to come through for us.
The ignorant masses showed their commonality last night.

I was thinking, after hearing Moroon5 last night, that no wonder Simon said he preferred Blake's version to the original. That guy CAN'T sing! he's TERRIBLE! And this is the #1 song in the land? Our kids are NUTZ and deaf. That band should drop the lead singer and let Blake be their front man, at least they'd be listenable then :) haha

"She knew how to sell a song, and sell it with style and quality, something today's youth no nothing about. "
anon - while I get your point, I just wanted to poke a little fun at you while you were ranting on our youth :) I suspect our youth "know" not to use "no" to mean "know" but then again, maybe that hasn't been taught in 20+ years :) hahaha just tought it funny that you were so riled up you used the wrong no/know :) I do that a lot when I'm typing mad and furiously haha

should be a nice finale, and we seem to be out of whack as to what to expect, so that should make for a more entertaining show hopefully, and at the very least, a lot of fun for us posting our thoughts :)

I can't help but snicker at the "young people have no musical taste" comments. I swear my mother told me the same thing about 30 years ago. It wasn't true then (from my perspective), but I'm sure it was from hers. It's just a matter of taste.

And I'm not holding my breath for an entertaining finale. They never are, primarily because they're forced to sing those crappy coronation songs all about puppies and rainbows. I don't know that I've ever really ever enjoyed fully the last performance episode. So I've stopped hoping to.

Ah, the generation gap.... Some years ago there was an artist who some felt emphasized the performance aspect of things far too much, though he was undoubtedly a fantastic technician, too. But he was very flashy and had the ladies either swooning or rushing the stage to fight (literally!) over mementos he left, including cigar stubs, or even his smashed up instruments. He created a whole new sound, and at the same time wrapped that sound in a style of performance which had no equal. You can imagine what the parents were saying.

Who was this guy? The pianist Franz Liszt, at his height during the first half of the 19th century.

As Solomon said, there's nothing new under the sun.

Nope, I was talking about Liszt :-) Early pianos (actually, pianofortes) were not nearly as strong as modern ones, and enthusiastic performers often broke strings and hammers. Beethoven was notorious for breaking pianos in the late 18th century. During concerts, it appears that page turners were equally occupied turning pages and trying to keep the instruments as playable as possible by removing broken strings and disentangling hammers...

Ahh, I really love listening to what everyone has to say. Jenn, thank you so much for making a place where I can come to in the middle of my busy hectic schedule to just "relax". I will even admit, I love reading all the comments that I think are completely ridiculous, this whole website is great! So now I'll comment on everything I've read...

First, I want to mention something that I can't believe no one else mentioned...especially you JJ! Right before a commercial cut, Ryan said "...and Melinda goes home, after the break!" Now, he meant it as they were going to show her clip of when she went back to TN, but isn't it ironic that he said it just like that? And Melinda's face when he said it!! It was PRICELESS! I just thought that was very funny, especially because Ryan already knows who is being eliminated. I said to my boyfriend after the comment, "I bet she really does go home tonight!" Which is one of the reasons why I wasn't shocked at all. Let me know if anyone else caught that.

Next week is going to be incredible! I'm going to add a little piece of my own mind to what JJ has already said...

Jordin will probably win AI6 next week, given the fact that she has unofficially won already. All the Melinda voters will flock to her because she is the next best thing to a perfect vocalist. (cos I still think thats the only thing that got Melinda as far as she did, it had NOTHING to do with performance)

Also every boy/girl finale, the winner was the same sex as the 3rd person out. (ie Kelly/Justin/Nikki, Carrie/Bo/Vonzell, Taylor/Kat/Elliott) It makes complete sense that AI6 will end Jordin/Blake/Melinda.

The grammar comments are hilarious! no/know, new/knew...I'm a grammar freak, so I noticed it too!

Yes, Maroon5 sucked last night, i had to FF through it.

Constantine's role on BATB makes me want to start watching soaps again. Yes his name is Constantine, and he is a lead singer in a band on the show. I thought he was going to be permanent but who knows.

Ok, I talked long enough and theres probably a ton of typos. Til next week...

Melinda will be successful, I believe. She deserves a great career. I think she was by far the most talented one, but I that isn't what this show is all about, after all.

And, btw, I really enjoyed the finale show last year. That Clay Aiken surprise will always be one of my all time favorite TV moments!

First of all: I happen to know some young kids that have great taste in music, and they voted for Melinda, so just ease up a little on them, ok? They're not all the same.

Second of all: I'm a fan of Maroon 5, but their performance was absolutely, positively horrible. I hated it. The "real" version, however, is much better.

Thirdly: Congrats to Jordin and Blake! I really wasn't too surprised with the results (although I will miss Melinda), and I'm sure Melinda will get a record deal.

Note to Sunshine: I picked up the "Melinda goes home after the break" line too. I thought: hmmm, not great for her to hear, especially given her superstition about jinxed lyrics.

I have a feeling that a BLAAAKKEE/Jordin finale is good for the AI franchise- they want to keep as young a viewing demographic as they can.

The big question is: will Jordin sing "I Who Have Nothing" yet again? She even sang that song at her hometown event!

You cannot write off Blake from pulling out a win. He outlasted Chris, Lakisha and Melinda. Did anyone really expect that to happen?

And Jennifer: I'll add my thanks to you for the great *water-cooler* you keep going here!

Melinda probably got a good break, after the required amount of time she'll be able to cut the CD she wants...like Chris Daughtry. As we know by Taylor's CD sometimes the "losers" get the better deal and more input. I'm kind of happy for her.

People always say it's better not to win or even place second. Chris Daughtry proved that to be true, because unless your name is Carrie Underwood, you're going to get crap for a first CD, and there's little you can do about it.

Sunshine, I certainly did catch that Ryan said Melinda goes home, next! I turned to my husband and said "what did he just say?" I wasn't even thinking of it in the context of the visits, the way he said it and the way she looked, it jolted me.

I am sad for Melinda, but I honestly enjoyed all three of the finalists equally. While I'm not wowed by any of them, I thought they were equally entertaining. Melinda obviously having the more mature, better trained voice. I do believe with time and experience Jordan will have quite a career. I hope Melinda goes towards jazz/blues. If she does, I'd buy her album in a minute.

alb, I was calling this final since about week 8 (8th spot cut that is). There wasn't any other guy with enough anything to make it as far, and I was off a little with Kiki, as I expected her to be the shocker cut around week 6 or 7, and I expected Phil or Gina to make 4 if she did get cut early. I did leave the option of her staying as she did, just expected some kind of surprise that didn't end up happening.

For me, the biggest surprise this season was Phil going the week he did. He had really hit his stride the 3 weeks before that, and had really impressed me. I expected him to make the top 4 after those country performances.

SS i think i recall that line, but took it at face value, or only for a split second didn't realize it and thought it was a funny teaser.

ok, now while cutting the grass today, I had a wild thought or two. So let's see how heat stroked I got? haha

Looking back over the year's contestants, I'm gonna go out on a limb and say that Haley, if she sticks with music, will actually outsell at least one of the top 4 over the course of the next 5 years. I know she's not a great singer, but she wasn't terrible, and if she sticks with it and gets signed, she has the "looks" to be a sexy, slightly sleezy, I guess in a less dance oriented Brittany mold :) She'd be unlikely to do the type of performance a Brittany would, but given the right material, it wouldn't surprise me she could make a living off of showing a lot of skin while singing :) haha I know, it's a flyer, but it was just a random thought that formed while thinking about the likelihood of Kiki or Mel selling pop star levels of albums :)

So much fun to just have time to walk and think of silly stuff haha

re: Haley

I don't know about that. She's basically Katharine McPhee with a less powerful voice and not quite as cute. She could do well if they will actually promote her album but since all of the other singers are contractually obligated to wait until the winner's album is out, her window of opportunity might be very, very short and she'll have to put out one heck of an album to be successful.

"People always say it's better not to win or even place second."...Jennifer.

True Jennifer, it's a little like pro football. There are far more Heisman Tropy winners that never made it in the NFL than there are NFL Hall of Famers that won the Heisman. Sometimes, it is better to fly a little under the radar. Some people choke when they get to the "Big Show", while others seem to be made for the "Big Stage."
Win or lose, Blake may be the real winner when they all start their post Idol careers. I still think he is the most creative, original, and entertaining of the final 6. I would probably vote for Jordin, but I think Blake can have the more successful career.

David, thing is, that's no longer true. Note that Taylor's album was 3rd of the 4 top 4 albums. Chris was first, Kat was a couple weeks before Taylor, and Elliot just released his. So it seems they've done away with that rule, or there are some 'holes' in it :)

If i could get say, 100:1 odds, I'd bet $10 or $20 on Haley ;) I don't know that I'd say she's just like Kat, Kat seemed a little more 'wholesome'. Haley, considering her willingness to exploit her body, comes across a little more trashy, but no where near as much as Barbaro. She's probably just a lounge singer type, but hey, now a days, anyone can be famous with a little luck and effort haha

I've been noticing the "Front-men" on current bands playing Saturday Night Live gigs (a good way to sample what's hot in music right now). Many of them don't hit all their notes perfectly. A lot are nasally, btw! And as for the cuteness factor, Blake has most of them beat. So I agree about Blake's potential, win or no.

As for a future for Haley, JJ-- wow, that's a stretch. I think you may have been out in the sun too much when you had that thought! ;-)

Haley should just go straight to video. Or Disneyland.

I think the rule is still in effect unless the others sign with 19E and/or Arista. Chris, Kat, Pickler and Taylor are all signed with Clive Davis, so they weren't bound by the same rules as Elliott, Paris, Mandisa and Bucky. (And Ace, I hear, is working on one.) And Covais is featured on Paris' CD. (I've listened; not comment-worthy.)

ah. so that group went with Clive? ok that makes more sense then :)

Guess Clive is happy he signed Chris :)

well, I wasn't suggesting I was sane when I had that Haley thought, but jenn, Disneyland would be a stretch, at least the way she was dressing towards the end ;) haha. Dress her more the way Kat did last year, and then yeah, she'd probably do good at something like that :) matter of fact, why not Carnival or another cruise line? Compared to a typical "lounge" singer, anyone from Idol is going to be a 'known' name that would attract more people than a no name would :)

Is there really no entry yet with speculations about tomorrow's songs, etc?

Other than rumors about Beatles songs, it's tough to speculate about a reprise and the original song. If you find any spoilers, point me in their direction. I'll be Dancing with the Stars.

so Jenn, who was your tops on DWTS ?? I can't stand that any of them have to loose, but especially Joey and Apollo. Joey's last dance was smokin'! and Apollo was just flat good all around. I actually voted, ended up with 3 Apollo's and 2 Joey's (for the wife haha)

I think it's Apolo's to lose. I voted my limit with three email addresses for him. First time ever that I voted.
