kris & adam: conquering earthquakes, mountains, famine, plague...

I have this image in my head of the events following Carrie Underwood's closing of the show last night.

Here's what I think happened:

Kris, after greeting the judges and kissing his wife, immediately bolted for the men's room to place approximately 562 "vote" text messages for Adam. Adam, in the meantime, not wanting to be suspected of sabotage, simply locked the door of his dressing room, quickly hitting redial 832 times on the "02" number for Kris.

Yeah. That's the way it went down, I'm sure.

After all, winning this season's American Idol means the poor slob has to sing that steaming pile of crap song that should have never seen the light of day, much less be foisted on two nice guys who never did anything to anybody.

Leave it to Kara, who's messed with this show all season, to leave the final performance show with a stench so bad I woke up this morning still smelling it.

Was No Boundaries really that bad? I had to loop Inside My Heaven to get the sound out.

The composer of season four's crappy coronation song should send Kara and her cohorts a thank you gift.

I hope they seriously consider switching the first single to something else. Anything else.

On the positive side, both Adam and Kris tried to make the best of a bad situation, and, in fairness, the song was ill-suited for both of their voices, so that was a draw, as was most of the evening with Kris slam-dunking his first selection, the reprise of Ain't No Sunshine, performed infintely better than its first incarnation, and Adam absolutely killing on Simon Fuller's selection, the Sam Cooke classic Change is Gonna Come.

I'm going to end the season by foregoing my worst to first list, because the original song was so bad it's unfair to critique either guy's interpretation of it. The other four performances were first rate, but first rate in an Adam sort of way and top notch in a Kris sort of way.

These two have such opposite styles, and both of masters of their styles, that comparing them to each other is the whole apples and oranges experiment.

This really will come down to a hair's difference, if dialidol.com is any indication. (And, if you'll recall, last season dialidol not only predicted a Cook win, but a Cook landslide by a nearly-precise number.)

What a fitting final performance episode. I said I didn't care who wins, and I still mean that. Adam will be a star regardless of tonight's result, and he won't be burdened by mountains, earthquakes, hurricanes and locusts. Kris will also find success, however tonight plays out.

If I had to choose the one who should win, of course it would be Adam. That young man has brought a vitality to this dinosaur of a show that has helped it thrive despite all of the twists and changes the new production staff has wrought this season. He has shown a level of creativity and originality throughout the season that few, if any, previously contestants have done, and all the while never missing a single note. (Okay, I'll just pretend Ring of Fire never happened, even though it was pitch perfect.) He has earned the title, and I'd like to think that voters voted last night based on a body of work, rather than a one-night stand, and for the man, not against him.

But things don't work that way.

So who will win? I don't have a clue.

Do you?

See you tonight for the two-hour finish...

I think Adam will win, no matter how the votes are tallied. I think the AI machine wants Adam to win, because it would be best for the company line. Kris is a great guy with a great voice and will sell many records. Adam is a risk, but one with potential huge rewards. And if he does hit that "superstardom" platform, AI wants their piece of it. If Adam crashes, then AI will just shake their heads and move on to Season 9.

I think "No Boundaries" should be reason enough to boot Kara off the show. Even Cowell thinks so, too. Why couldn't htey quit after "A Moment Like This"?

By rights, Adam should win based on the whole season. However, after last night, it wouldn't surprise me if either of the guys walked away a winner. In some ways, this season's Idol is like this "season's" DWTS: all of the finalists would be acceptable if they won or lost.

I think deep down, Adam wants to lose so he can benefit from being part of the Idol machine but not be obligated to the contract that binds the winner, only he's too nice to say it.

I agree 100% with Dave. Kara's song sucked and they should get rid of her. I think I could of wrote a better song. LOL

I agree that based on the season Adam should win, but I really like Chris too. I think he's adorable.

Right now I don't care which one wins, I think they're both going to do well. Execpt the winner will have to sing that terrible song.....so maybe second place this year is the winning spot!

I'm with you as usual Jennifer. I really don't care who wins. I've been a Kris fan from the getgo but wasn't crazy about Adam at first. Actually, I started to like/admire him when he performed Ring of Fire. I got a 'thumbing his nose vibe' that I enjoyed. I LOVED his Donny Darko song the first time he performed it and was delighted he chose it again. I was expecting Kris to do Falling Slowly since he got such rave reviews on it but it was great that he did Sunshine because, as you said, he sang it sooooooo much better last night than the first time he performed it. I loved Fuller's choice for Adam and was reeling by the time he finished. Amazing!! Fuller's choice for Kris was a little disappointing. Yes, he put his Allenesque spin on it but for me it fell kind of flat! As for the craptastic coronation song.. the crappiest one yet IMO and that's saying a lot. Kris was the better of the two but who cares.. the song was so bad!!!! It was a travesty that someone of Adam's talent was forced to sing such tripe!!!! I loved how Simon wouldn't comment on it but somehow manage to get in a dig re: the lyrics. When I heard Kara had co-written the song I was sort of hopeful that it would be great since she really hasn't revealed a whole lot of talent to date and I hoped a well written song would redeem her. But no!! Who the hell is she anyway??? I never heard of her before this season!!!
As for who wins tonight?? Cliche alert!!! They really have both won already.

If DialIdol is correct, Adam will win by only 20,582votes. That is a super closer race. Compared to David Cooks landslide over David Archuleta's beating him by over 90,000 votes.

I have to admit I have had the mindset of picking between the two based on last night and I voted for Kris. But looking back over the entire season; Adam was the most consistently awesome performer.

I like them both and will be happy if either wins, but knowing the stigma that gets attached to the winner, I hope Adam wins and not Kris, because I would rather Kris not have that stigma attached to him. I think Adam can handle it, but Kris, not so sure. PEACE!

I watched a Boston Legal rerun during Idol's time slot last night. 'nuff said.

So why are you here?
Gavintiegirl.. I said the same thing to my co-worker. Adam has the talent, the personality, the fan base and the chutzpah to survive the inevitable damage done to the winner by the producers. I don't think Kris can. For that reason alone I hope Adam wins.

to make a point, JJ. I've been addicted to Idol for 8 seasons and not once have I gone into the finale without SOMEONE to root for. This season was over (for me and a plethora of others like me) last Wednesday.

Oh I see.. So you were a Danny fan? I'm sorry your guy got cut before the end. I felt similarly when Allison was voted out and also in previous seasons. It's hard to find another favorite at such short notice.
This year however, I'm happy with who's there now.

That so-called coronation song put me in a bad mood. I'm still cranky. That said, I think Kris' version was better. I disagree that it was too high a key for him. I think he just hated singing it so much that he even forgot a fragment of a lyric in the first half of it.

Blech!!! What a stinker! (The song, not Kris.)

For JJ: I never heard of Kara before the show either, but then again I don't pay attention to who writes songs for whom. I did a google search on her and found she has an impressive body of work as a songwriter and producer, with 39 Top 10 albums on Billboard's 200. She has songs on over 100 MILLION albums. She's written for singers such as Celine Dion, Kylie Minogue, Ricky Martin, Jessica Simpson, Clay Aiken, Britney Spears, Christina Aguilera, Lara Fabian, Natasha Bedingfield, Kelly Clarkson, Gwen Stefani, Pink, Faith Hill, David Archuleta, and a whole host of others. I think she's deserving of more respect than people are giving her. Just not for "No Boundaries." lol

The finale was a draw for me. I thought they were both amazing on their first two songs...each hitting homers, in my opinion. I will be happy with either of them winning. I told my husband they should both be crowned the winner. Hey! Now THERE'S a twist for the twisted of all seasons! TWO winners!

They really do both deserve it. Adam has been consistent throughout the competition and cemented his place as THE most original AI contestant ever.* Kris has grown by leaps and bounds over the season, all the while maintaining his artistic integrity. I think they're both fantastic, in very different ways, and I wish them both a lifetime of success.

I didn't vote last night because I will be happy with whoever wins. That said, I'm looking forward to this season being done. It's probably the first season where I'm just tired of it all. Too many switch-ups. Too much of the judges and not enough of the contestants has left me in need of a refreshing palate cleanser.

So You Think You Can Dance? should do the trick nicely! :D

Thanks for another entertaining season, Jennifer. Take care and I'll see you next season...

Jenann

* Up until Adam, David Cook held the title of THE most original AI contestant. Now wouldn't THAT have been a killer finale? DC vs Glambert! Who'd have won that???

I would have like to have seen what Chris D. could have done if he'd been allowed to tinker with the songs more and play instruments on stage.

From what I've read around the Interweb, no one questions Kara's qualifications as a songwriter. It's her judgment that is suspect. Personally, I think she has more to say than Randy and if a judge is gone after the end of this season, it should be R-Dawg.

The basic assumption about the judges is that there should be one performer (Paula), one music industry exec (Simon) and one person who works "off stage" with the talent. Randy, for all his faults as a judge, is a solid producer and Kara fills the same role as an accomplished songwriter.

I think the chemistry at the judges table is irrelevant to the overall quality of the show, but without a doubt there should only be three seats at the table.

Well I'm glad to see that Kara is in fact a talented songwriter..and the fact that I've never heard of her prior to this season doesn't mean much.. However, that is a very impressive list of people who have recorded her songs. She must have been a little off her game or uninspired or overruled by her co-writers on No Boundaries!!! Something was amiss!!!
I don't hate her as a judge, in fact, sometimes she hits the critique right on, but sometimes she's way off.. of course this is just my opinion and I'm sure there are plenty who will disagree. The fact remains that there are too many judges and Ryan just isn't good enough at moving things along when they get too wordy or too silly! Tom Bergeron in DWTS does a very good job of keeping everyone on track. Ryan should take a few pages from his book.
Anyway, it was a good season with some great singers and I too am glad it's almost over.
Thanks again Jennifer.. your website is wonderful as is Highlord Dave's

I don't, for the life of me, see what anyone sees in Kris. He has NO distinguishing sound to his voice, like Adam does. I make this prediction: Kris will never have a gold record. Adam will go platinum with his first. And Gokey? He will do a 6 Flags show somewhere and trot off into oblivion. Allison will have an excellent future on cruise ships, or serenading Mickey at Disneyworld.

I wish we could place bets on PayPal and you guys could bet me on these predictions....I'd be very wealthy.

Dave,

I'm in total agreement with you. Randy should go. Kara is a producer as well as songwriter, so she matches Randy in terms of experience (though she's not been around nearly as long as he has been). Paula, as ditzy as she can be at times, at least tries to give positive, constructive criticism. She's got a kind heart and seeks to encourage the kids on numerous levels. She's just not very eloquent most of the time.

Kara, on the other hand, always has constructive criticism for the singers. Agree with her or disagee, she at least has an opinion and something of value for the kids to take away. I appreciate that about her. Unlike "Dawg." He's just become such a broken record.

I hope they go back to the 3-judge format next year. AND SEPARATE PAULA AND SIMON, FOR GOODNESS SAKE!

lol

To briefly touch on JJ's point about Tom Bergeron, the difference between him and Seacrest is that Tom knows no one is tuning in to watch or listen to him.

He's the ringleader and know that his only job is to keep things moving. Seacrest thinks he's an integral part of the show. Truly, he's almost as useless as a sideline reporter, only he doesn't know it. At least Erin Andrews knows she's just eye candy.

I believe that Seacrest honestly thinks that people want to hear him speak. If they would replace him with Tom Bergeron (or the super yummy Lauren Sanchez from SYTYCD season 1) things would move so much faster and without all the useless banter.
