lose one, lose another...

Jon Bonjovi is in the house, rocking with the kids. Two are gonna bite the dust after tonight, because we just couldn't, apparently, bear to execute an Idol kid while attempting to raise gazillions to feed the starving children all over the universe.

So they say they're gonna add last week's votes to this week's votes, allowing for the possibility that one of the kids who didn't place last either week to get kicked to the curb.

I hate double boots.

But THIS is American Idol.

And in a bizarre double elimination night, where the President and First Lady close show and Chris is better than Jordin, anything can happen.

But anyway, here they are, my early impressions, subject to review and revision and, as usual, from worst to first.

Jordin Sparks (Livin' on a Prayer). Jordin is second up, and apparently had a tragic hair accident on the way down the hall. Gratefully, she is the first person to admit the performance was, well, not good. It was frenetic, bordering on shrieking, according to Simon, but she accepts the unanimous poor reviews graciously, which is gonna save her. That and the body of work she's turn in so far.

Chris Richardson (Wanted Dead or Alive). Chris makes sure to let everyone know that he knows that Daughtry recorded this song last year, wisely avoiding the LaKisha remarks. And he turns in a perfectly acceptable, if a bit strident, version of this BonJovi classic. Simon gives him a half and half shot of surviving tomorrow.

Phil Stacey (Blaze of Glory). Phil says he's been practicing this song with his comb for 15 years. Practice, obviously, pays off, as he opens the show schmoozing with the audience and has a little exchange with Randy before hitting the big stage. Randy says it's his best performance aside from country week. Paula says it's the best show opener all season, and Simon tells him he'll probably not last to next week, which is sure to light a fire under his voters. Aside from Jordin, Phil is the one who's shown consistent improvement, and I think he deserves to continue to next week. That was a solid performance.

LaKisha Jones (This Ain't a Love Song). Everything that LaKisha has done wrong since her first performance she corrects, except, regrettably, the wardrobe. She kicks off her performance with an abundance of personality, answering another of those insufferable viewer questions. She then wraps her arms around the soulfullness of the number and squeezes it to near death. And, just for good measure, a beautifully-measured stop at the end earns her a kiss from Simon.

Blake Lewis (You Give Love a Bad Name). I am loving Blake's new hair color, but not as much as I loved this performance, part beatboxed, part sung, fully performed. Randy hands him the award for the most original rendition of a song. I give him the award for most enjoyable performance of the night.

Melinda Doolittle (Have a Nice Day). MindyDoo says she doesn't know how to rock. Bon Jovi tells her to "take it to church." And she does. The judges invoke the holy name of Tina Turner numerous times. I just say it was the best vocal of the night.

Okay, now the tough part. We're killing two. Or so they say. If last week taught us anything, it's not to believe what they say.

Who I want: Chris and Phil.
Who should: Chris and LaKisha.
Who will: Chris and Phil.

So? What's your gut telling you?

Best to last:

Blake
Melinda
LakiSha
Phil
Jordin
Chris

Based on last week, it doesn't look good for Chris & Jordin.

LakiSha or Phil might save Jordin.

If DialIdol knows anything Jordin's votes from last week will save her this week. Which probably means Lakisha is toast.

I think Lakisha and Phil should be the two who get whacked, although if you substitute Chris in for either of them, I will be happy.

The finals should be Blake, Jordin and Melinda.

The other three should all just get canned at once because none of them deserve to win this year.

I agree with you Dave. Blake Jordin, and Melinda should be in the finals.

When I heard that Blake changed the song, I thought he's ruin it, but he did a great job!

Melinda is good every week!

This wasn't Jordins best week, but she still has "IT"! I think she will go far.

sorry Jen, not usually this divergent with ya :)

Jordin was the worst, but she tried real hard, and while it was musically horrid, what do you really expect from a 17 year old in an era when Rock like that isn't the "hip" style of the day? I would call this one a Simon special: "song choice, song choice and song choice".

Chris, sorry, but that was a bad Wanted Dead or Alive. I liked Simon's comment, "you did the best you could with this genre, it's not you style of singing" or some such. That's a nice way of saying, it wasn't good at all. He doesn't have a rocker sound or mentality.

Lakisha sang well, I guess, but I didn't know the song (wasn't the only one of the night), and it did nothing to excite me or the wife. We liked Jordin disaster better, from an entertainment factor. At least we were interested in how bad she was doing. Kiki's song just sorta sat there, it was pleasant, like Sunday brunch.

Melinda was no way even close to the best of the night. Did she sing well? always does. But she is NO rocker. He voice is wrong for being a rocker (poor Gina, this was her homerun night). She moved around, rocker style, better than expected, this was the week I expected a total meltdown for her and Lakisha, but both did rather decent to well considering how far out of their wheelhouses this week is. I enjoyed the song, it was entertaining, but simply put, the last 2 were "better" rocker performances.

Phil rocked the house. Had Blake not Blakeified his song, Phil would have had the performance of the night. Phil was in tune, had power in his voice, and really sold the song. I'm amazed at how much he's changed since the country song 2 weeks ago. He found something, and got some confidence, and now as a rocker, he put himself into it, and it showed. Excellent vocal, I'd say the best pure vocalist of the boys. very very impressed, there's no reason for him to go, and he deserves to stay after these past 3 performances!

BLA-AA--AA--KKKKK-EEKK-KKEEE. haha he RETURNS! This is the Blake that knocked my socks off the first couple weeks. This is the guy I think can win it all, because he's the only one that performs in a way that you watch and say, 'yeah, I would buy a ticket to his show, because he's gonna be very entertaining and has an easy on the ears voice'. Tonight is exactly the type of "show" I'd be expecting from him on stage, beat boxing, having fun with the band and audience, enjoying the song. He simply hit a Grand Slam. He took the biggest chance of anyone since, Bo I think it was, with the (can't spell the word, doh) no music song. That wasn't so much an original arrangement, but it was a huge risk. This risk was off the charts, and the little Jukebox/record player load up was fantastic to start it off, the little solo duel with the drummer wsa very fun, the vocal was very solid, he kept the chorus right where you wanted it, and it was 'rockin' my house! the sub was working overtime and the whole upper floor was thumping. If he will do that style of arrangement from here on out, he'll either win, or he'll earn the kind of following Daughtry did, though maybe not as large since he hasn't stuck with this style enough.

The girls were at a huge disadvantage, Bon Jovi is about as rough for the girls as many of the early weeks were for the guys, with the likes of Donna Summer etc. Maybe they should do a male and female for these types of weeks. Bon Jovi for the guys, maybe Pat Benetar or Joan Jett for the gals. I never like the songs when it's a staple from the other sex, a guy just can't do a diva song justice, and a girl can't do songs like these justice, though Gina might have done well. This group of girls just has no connection with this style unfortunately for them.

Can't wait to hear Jon tomorrow night, I hope he picks a good song :)

coupled with last week, this is a tough call, but I gotta think Chris has to go, and of the rest, Melinda can't go, Jordin I can't believe would go for 1 song in a style so opposite her personality, and as well as Blake did tonight, I can't imagine he isn't getting tons of votes tonight. So of Phil and Lakisha, Phil is the one improving a lot lately, and if based on this week and last only, I'd have to think Phil stays. But it's gonna be interesting as we know, it always is at this stage.

For, me, I can't wait for Chris to go, and Kiki is my least favorite of the rest. Phil shockingly has leapfrogged to 4th for me, and if he keeps singing this well, he's going to throw a wrench in things.

Ok, I'll do a quick blunt comment this week. LOVE the man who made rock pretty....LOVE him! I thought all the performances were overall good this week, even if Jordin screwed up, at least she admitted to it. This is my order from best to worst:

1. Blake - I love this guy. you can't beat originality and he can SING too.
2. LaKisha - she's finally back, and picked an awesome song, not a known BonJovi hit and still blew it away
3. Phil - he picked the most country Bon Jovi song besides "You Can't Go Home" with Jennifer Nettles, i thought it was a good job
4. Chris - it was kinda copycat but still alright, he missed the words a little and covered it really well
5. Jordin - the 2 band members bothered me more that they were in Jordin's way, I like that she pointed to Gina when she sang "Gina works the diner all day" (miss Gina)
6. Melinda - I guess I'm the only one who noticed that she was completely behind the music, she did NOT rock, and she looks like a monkey! Take a look back, its not as good as you guys think...REALLY

Ok, so it wasn't as short as I wanted, but I just get mad at all the praise that Melinda gets. Kinda like Fantasia season 3. But nevertheless, Jennifer I still luv you and the blog, even if you like Melinda.

I'll have to watch Melinda again then. I thought she was off once, but didn't get the feeling she was the whole time. though I did think she was trying hard to be unlike herself :)

JJ & Sunshine - I agreed with everything you said! And Melinda is probably a very nice person but I was really glad when her 2 and a 1/2 minutes were over.

I also noticed Melinda was a little off at times, but her amazing voice made the performance enjoyable for me. She rocked out much better than I thought she would!

It was nice to see Blake back to doing something unique--he'd really bored me the last few weeks. I thought Jordin was pretty hard to listen to, with Chris coming in a close second. I was surprised that Dialidol still had Jordin way over the top after that performance. Unfortunately, I think Chris and Kiki will be the ones to go, and I'll be sorry to see Kiki go after coming back with a good performance. With that said, I'll be sorry to see Phil go too if that happens, as I really like him too. I wish they'd only eliminate one tonight!!! It feels like the top 5 all deserve to stick around another week!

I think Melinda is pro. She consistently delivers great performances, many times choosing songs that are probably a stretch for her. Kudos to her. I also like Blake, Jordin and Phil (as a long shot). So that leaves KiKi and Chris to bow out tonight.

At this stage of the game, what I look at is the overall attitude of each person + talent. The three that I would like to invite into my living room are: Blake, Jordin and Melinda. The other three....well I think that stardom has gone to their head and I no longer enjoy their performances.

Phil: You are too needy and sweaty, even if your vocals are improving.

Chris: We already have a Justin Timberlake who is not nasally.

Lakisha: You can't turn every song into "I am Telling You I'm Not Going" You seem like a really sweet woman though.

Jordin: You're very cute and in another year or two I'm sure you'll be ready to win a competition like this.

Melinda: You're awesome, but your gravelly effort to be a Rocker last night didn't appeal to me, it's not your thing. I'm also worried that you're too mature for the AI demographic.

Blake: BLLLLLAAAAKKKKEEEEEEEEE!!!!!
(Can you tell I'm biased?) Can you come to my house and mime and beatbox for me and discuss hair color and fashion?

It sounds like just about everyone is on the same page.

Lakisha and Chris should be leaving.

I love Jon Bonjovi! He's hot, Anyone know how old he is. I know he's no band boy, (age wise) or the Rolling Stones, (old) so I guess he's in the middle some place.

Damn I love Bon Jovi. I'll leave it at that...I thought Phil did a great job, best this season...I was disappointed with Kiki and Melinda did a good job considering this song was so far from her comfort zone but to see Simon kiss a contestant made my whole week!
I think Chris or Kiki will leave tonight. Cannot wait to see Bon Jovi sing and I hope he uses one of the contestants to sing the female part and does his latest hit which I love.
