kat v. taylor: a simulblog...

It's been a long season. And a very brief one. And it's ending tonight, because tomorrow is all about fun. Well, until we crown one and execute the other, shoving him or her to the side so that we can make room for confetti.

Three songs, one original that no one will like tomorrow, and two that are getting their second run, now on the really big stage. And this is a simulblog, written as it's happening, complete with typos and misplaced commas, with breaks at every important stop. There will be no worst to first ranking, at least not until the morning after.

And I must say, that as a voter with no dog in this fight, it is awfully relaxing to watch without the aid of antacids or adult beverages. Well, maybe some adult beverages, but only cause I want to.

Because THIS is American Idol.

Randy, Paula and Simon are giving mundane advice before we're treated to both of their journeys, because with only six songs, even counting the Bad Day song planned by Daniel Powter, we've got a lot of time to McPhill. (Sorry.)

YAY it's Chris Daughtry! And Dad McPhee isn't crying yet.

And Katharine is up with Black Horse and a Cherry Tree. And thankfully she is on her feet this time, but in a really terrible shirt. Smart girl. But her drummers are back, and she's pulling some Tayloresque dance moves. Randy agrees with me that this was a better vocal than the last time she delivered it. Paula is typically Paula. Simon calls it a warmup, because the occasion, he says, is bigger than the song she selected.

Taylor is up with Livin' for the City, his Stevie Wonder performance, and he's in the brightest purple velvety blazer I've ever seen. He works his way through the audience [Elliott sighting!!], up to the stage, back to the audience, up on the catwalk and back to the stage, and ignites the crowd into one of the longest applauses this season. That was terrific. Randy says it's a hawt one. Paula has lost her mind and it's still early. [Ace sighting!] Simon has to pan the jacket. [Pickler/Bucky sighting!!] but gives him the Simon thumbs up.

Round one: Taylor in a knockout.

So Katharine is going to run the risk of crapping on her moment from last week by sitting on the stage and pounding out Somewhere Over the Rainbow. And I actually think I like this week's version better. McPhather is bawling, and the audience won't shut up. Randy says she "worked it out." Paula calls her possessed by one thing or another. Simon says it was again her best performance of the season. She's happy, I suppose, that she was given good critiques, but happier that she started on the right key, considering her earpiece was picking up the Comedy Channel or something. But as long as she's happy, I guess that's all the matters.

Taylor's dad introduces his boy's Levon, one of my personal fave performances from the semi-finals. [Lisa/Melissa sighting!] Randy calls it pitchy, Paula says it's not pitchy it's Taylor (whatever) and Simon gives this round to Katharine. I agree.

Round two: Katharine by a field goal.

We get to see the requisite parent-remembers-kid-growing-up-singing puff piece, and she's climbing the wall of death, commonly and affectionately referred to as the crappy original song. Hers is My Destiny. And this is the first time all season I've said this: she looks stunning. It's very Inside My Heaven-ish, but makes some of those crappy original songs seem, well, exciting. She does get a choir though, and they have robes on. That's always a plus. Randy hates the crappy song, but says she sounded good. Paula assures her that she didn't write the song so it's not her fault just in case Kat decides to go all last week on them, and Simon gives her essentially the "it's been nice to have you" speech. Ouch.

Taylor's crappy original song, Do I Make You Proud, starts with about the same amount of excitement as the one that preceded it, but then busts into that obligatory choir chorus and, yep, sure enough, here come the robed ones. "Everybody needs to be loved" seems to be the main message here. Oh Taylor. You're gonna have to record this crap. Please Taylorize it in the studio. Randy hates the song only slightly less, but loves Taylor. Paula loves Taylor. Simon tells him he's just won the whole thing.

And I agree. Without question.

But will he?

See you tomorrow. Now go vote.

I think that Katharine's song started out great but she started getting awfully squeeky and strained at the end.. and with Tylor I think it was the opposite.. I was really worried at the beginning because he had a look like (oh my gawd do I have to do this?).. but when he got going on it he blew me away... so I think that overall Taylor was the strongest but I think, like Simon says, that Katharine has real potential.. but what do I know.. lol

I've come to love the crappy song; it's such a part of the fabric of this show.

But what cracks me is that they will go through chapter and verse telling these kids about song selection, blah, blah, but when it's time to put the shoe on the other foot, well...

Anyone notice the alternate ending of Taylor's last song during recap?
When he sang the song he ended it with the mic in his hand in front of the mic stand during the recap he was standing behind the mic with his arms open wide. What gives?

Don't worry, I'll keep trying.

Honestly, I'd vote for Taylor even if he had come out on stage and wet his pants, but I sincerely believe he was better than VCM tonight, so I have no guilt about voting for him.

Those recaps are filmed during dress rehearsal and they've differed from the live performance a lot this season, I've noticed.

And thanks for the homepage! It's either going to be a long time till this show is back, or it's going to feel like next week. I'm going to miss it. And everyone who stops by.

to answer gavintiegirl: the recaps come from the dress rehearsal so they have time to edit them.

otherwise: I'm a huge kat fan but it seemed like her voice was just strained tonight. but while taylor may have sung better, he was also much more arrogant tonight while kat was strangely sweet. the "soul patrol"s got totally out of hand -- I mean, wait till AFTER the judges say good things. and I loved kat's thanks to the fan clubs and her little wink to the mcphather.

everything is upside down -- what a strange bizarro-world of a final!

I just hafta' say that I thought this whole show was beautifully done. Okay, so call me a Sentimental Slob (been there, am that). From Ryan's opening in the darkened theater, to his "This IS AMERICAN IDOL", even through the crappy third songs, to the "Bad Day" ending with all the "Bad Day" footage...sigh...I'm gonna' go all weepy on y'all. I loved it! As for my assessment...the Best One had a Bad Day 2 weeks ago, but of the two left standing, Taylor's IS the Next American Idol (or should be).

Next up...

The final performance show is always a bit of a letdown, with two songs we've never heard and always hate, plus four songs we've seen already. But I guess for the first-time viewers it was fun.

Taylor's first song was the highlight for me. After that I went to sleep. But tomorrow!!!! Oh the finale. LOVE the FINALE!!! Cannot WAIT!

Great blog as always Jen, I completely agree with your assessments. Anyone else think the judges were being super nice to Kat at the end? I mean she pretty much butchered it towards the end there, but it WAS a pretty bad song to begin with so I think they felt bad for her.

By the way, anyone know whats up with DJ Slim's page???

I'd say DJ Slim probably is using up more bandwidth than he is paying for. Thank god for free Blogspot!!!!

If they're going to stick the two finalists with a crappy song, they could at least stick them both with the same song (like they did to Bo and Carrie).

This year, VCM clearly got the shaft in the "original" song selections and it will probably cost her the competition

I thought that going in to the third round, it was a dead heat, but because he got a little bit better song, Taylor is going to win. Unless the Katharine voters are so enraged by Simon's premature coronation (I hear they make a medicine for that, now), that they burn up their phones calling/texting away for her, I don't think there's any doubt that we are going to have our second male American Idol.

Let's just hope that he's a little more successful that Rueben and that FRC is no where to be seen tomorrow.

It does make it impossible to compare two separate songs, but it was a concession to Taylor who didn't want to sing the other song. (Who would blame him?) Kat should have been assertive too. And Simon's remarks might just light that fire like you say. Would surprise me at all.

And you know FRC will be there. Anywhere there is a camera, he's there... Saw him on Idol Tonight.

You go soul patroller!!

So I thought tonight's show was OK, I miss Elliott though.

I thought Katharine performed her 2 (non-original) songs well but they still didn't do much for me. I AM SO TIRED OF McDAD. Seriously, they need to stop putting the camera on him.

Taylor's first was great - what a crazy jacket!! And his second was good.

Both original songs were awful!!!! Man, did they get railroaded!! But Taylor brought his together in the end and did well with it. Katharine didn't have a chance, poor girl, that song was just terrible.

I watched with a first time viewer who said, "Honestly... I don't like either of them." Kind of made me chuckle. I wish she had seen Elliott!!

My vote: Soul Patrol all the way - I've gotten through 8 times so far and I will not give up.

West Coast here...

I've just gotten through the first two songs for each. I agree with Simon and Jennifer's assessment: Round 1 Taylor, Round 2 Katherine (as much as I loathe conceding that point to Kat). Her vocals are very good on "Rainbow," but the fact that her choreography is exactly the same as last week's makes me feel she's disingenuous. There's no real emotion there, and because of that I still prefer Taylor's "Levon." But from a purely close-my-eyes and only-listen-to-the-singing perspective, I have to give round 2 to Kat.

Oh...brb...Kat's about to sing her 3rd song...

Yeeesh! The judges were being kind! What an awful song! No, that wasn't Kat's fault. However, she did not deliver vocally. Made me long for Ayla, who would have done a better job with the song, imho. Kat was out of tune and looked like she was in pain for the entire second half of the song. But yes, she looked amazing. Oh, the other problem I had with this performance (as I did with many of her other ones throughout the competition), is she cut off the end of her song and dropped her microphone before the song was actually over. A true performer will milk those sustained notes for all their worth. She giggles at the end of all her songs like this is the Gong Show or something. Sorry, hated it.

Oh! brb...Taylor's about to sing again.

Ummm...HOMERUN! TOUCHDOWN! TKO!!! Keeping it real (rolling my eyes), it was pitchy in the beginning. But by the middle of the song, especially when the choir came out, he kicked it up a notch...BAM!!! He sounded fantastic! Gooooo Taylor!

I completely agree with Simon. And I'm off to vote!

See you all tomorrow when Taylor will be crowned King of AI! woohooo!

P.S. I'd like to give a shout out to my honey, "L," who's away on business. I [heart] you! But, even YOU have to admit Taylor was the better performer tonight. ;)

ROFL

You're funny. But yeah, I like Taylor, too. Both he and Kat had their moments last night.

I especially loved Taylor's first song, jacket included. Somehow I think he was one of the few Idol guys who could pull off that look. And speaking of looks, Kat looked stunning tonight, very classy. I don't always like her outfits, but last night she looked really nice. I was pleasantly surprised by her reprise of "Rainbow"; nice job again. I was worried that she'd totally take away the "magic" of last week's performance, but she definitely pulled it off.

But what was with the crappier-than-usual original songs? I know Idol wouldn't be Idol without them, but still...I agree with Laura; why CAN'T they get Diane Warren to write a song or two for them? If they can get Meatloaf and Stevie Wonder and even Elton John, why can't they at least hire someone to write a decent first single for the contestants?

Honestly, I wasn't crazy about either song, but I thought Taylor pulled his off moreso than Kat did. I still believe, like Paula said (wait, did I just agree with Paula?!?), that Kat couldn't help that the song wasn't that great. Still, though, I think we may have our first male American Idol in ages.

If we were to base the winner solely on their vocals, Kat won.

Taylor's voice was weak, and Kat held back a little, IMO. If everyone can say that Kat over sings, then you can def. say that Taylor under sings, and sounds really poor when he does. The only time the crowd got excited was when he was yelling and dancing, and screaming Soul Patrol.

Oh it's so good to know that Simon can say what he says even though he personally doesn't feel the same way about what he actually says...okay if that didn't make any sense let me say it like this, he is saying Taylor is the winner, but I know he's not Simon's choice, Simon is pretty much like a big portion of the country, he could care less who wins now that Chris is gone.

I thought this was a singing competition, Simon? You would have thought that Taylor was the underdog this whole season. I wish it would have been Elliott, over Taylor.

I hate to say, I was a bit pissed that Randy kept saying that no matter what Taylor sings, he's comfortable...maybe because he's NEVER stepped out of his comfort zone. 99% of his songs he knew heart and soul, making everything he did a breeze. He never once worried about his vocals because when he was supposed to be singing he was running around and you could barely hear him. I spoke with a lot of people last night during the show and they all said they felt Taylor's voice was going and he can't sing the low notes properly.

Once, just once they should have made him sing a song that was written after 1985 and out of his comfort zone, like all the other contestants had to do. Everyone else was called on it except him.

It wasn't disappointing to hear a desperate Katherine screech the last part of her original song after blowing the low register notes (singing them off-key as well) at the song's beginning. She's done it all competition, at least she didn't forget the words this time. I guess she's improving, after all.

Too bad the judges were cowered by her constant whining and complaints about their being too hard on her. When Randy comments on how good she looks, you KNOW that's the kiss of death.

I will miss an encore of You've Had a Bad Day sung for Katherine tonight, I was dying to see her stomp her foot and throw a hissy fit on stage. The good news is this is the last time I have to see daddy McPhee blubber like a baby beluga over all the money he spent on braces for her teeth.
Get that guy a case of Kleenex, what a putz.

If Elliot couldn't win, at least Taylor can be the ABK (anyone but Katherine) winner.

Prediction: she goes absolutely nowhere outside regional musical theater playing Belle, in Beauty and the Beast. Maybe she can sing that on key, then again, maybe not.

Congratulations to both of them for their great performances through this season.

I think Taylor probably won it last night. It was pretty even after the first two songs but Taylor did better on his crappy coronation song. Given that I think he was probably favored going into it, I would be suprised if he didn't win it. Kat's my favorite but I like Taylor a lot too so I don't have a big problem with that outcome. I'll buy both of their CDs when they come out.

I can see something with Simon's point about Black Horse and the Cherry Tree not being a big enough song for the occasion. But I think Kat was alluding to a valid point, that its a current song and singing something recent is a way to try to rally the younger crowd to vote for you.

She pretty much nailed Somewhere Over the Rainbow again I was happy to see.

As far as the crappy songs go, you guys are the biggest show on television, you made millions just last night in advertising. Can you hire some better writers? :P For Kat's song it sounded like it was meant to get belty at the end. Which, after four to five weeks now of telling the girl that she isn't a belter couldn't someone maybe have communicated that to Clive and the Crappy Coronation Song Committee? That being said, it certainly wasn't her strongest performance.

Still very happy she made it to the finals and look forward to what she does in the future.

Looking forward to all the performances tonight.
