it's idol night (for the last time)...

No more rumors, speculation or innuendo about song selection, who can sing what, when, how or in standing or seated positions. Well, the seated/standing thing is still in wait-and-see mode.

Taylor's crappy original song is entitled Do I Make You Proud?, says Ken Warwick. And, in addition to the original number, Taylor has decided to go with two tried-and-true songs, one from the semi-finals (and the one I was hoping for), Levon, and Livin' for the City.

Katharine's original song, as we now know, is the interestingly-titled My Destiny, and she will bring back Somewhere Over the Rainbow after only seven days and her well-received version of Black Horse and a Cherry Tree.

Thoughts?

Taylor made GOOD choices, though I personally would have prefered You are so Beautiful.
Kat???? I dunno - Somewhere Over The Rainbow could be make-or-break. She can't nail it any better than she already did but then again maybe she feels she's the underdog & has to go all out. Playing it safe might not work.

Thanks for the info Jennifer! I don't know if its such a great idea for Kat to sing "Rainbow" again already. If she doesn't hit it perfectly, she'll get panned for it.

I tend to agree that singing "Over the Rainbow" only a week later seems a bit soon, but given that it was the best-received song of hers all year, it might be a good call.

I think she needs to come up with a different delivery or perhaps a different arrangement; she got a lot comparisons to Fantasia's "Summertime" performance and given that K-Lo sang "Over the Rainbow" a zillion times throughout the audition and semi-finals rounds, VCM needs to put her own stamp on it.

"Black Horse and a Cherry Tree" was also good, although I would say she also needs to bring a fresh spin to the choreography.

I also think Katharine will wear at least one outfit that leaves all the boys (and curious girls) hoping that the double-sided tape doesn't hold.

Jennifer, thank you for everything this year! You have been great and have made me laugh!

On another note, I want to encourage everyone not to vote. If your favorite is out of the game (Chris or Elliott), save your time, energy, and money (text messaging). Let's show Fox that we CARE about who wins and are not going to vote just because we can. Does it really matter at this point anyway? The top two will get recording contracts with AI and sell millions so what's the point? I'll tell you, to sell us things. The commercial cost for these shows must be close to Superbowl rates by now. The goal of the final two shows is to make as much money as possible for AI and advertisers. Best yet, TiVo it and fast forwarding during commercials!

I don't know that not voting is going to send as much of a message to anyone as will downloading our favorite's individual track from the compilation CD. I've already done my part.

And I will vote tonight. Just don't know for whom. But no texting from me.

There is an excellent article at USAToday.com a few excerpts as follows:

Music consultant Dennis O'Donnell likens Taylor to a modern-day Kenny Rogers. "Taylor could be a pop-country guy, and that's not a bad thing," he says. "It's right down the middle. If he gets a hit, it will stay around awhile. Though he's awkward and sort of oafish, he has charm and he doesn't have the air of an actor. What I'm reading is that he knows he's got the tiger by the tail. All he needs is good songs. People already like him."Katharine, on the other hand, doesn't exhibit the drive to win, "but seems to think she deserves it," says O'Donnell, predicting a failed music career and possible future in commercials. "She's cold and artificial. When she sings, she's looking for the camera and seems to be assuming a character. She attempts the vocal gymnastics of Celine Dion . When people hear Celine, they know it's real. Katharine seems manufactured. I think she'll fade."

My thoughts EXACTLY.

I'm not sure that bringing back "Rainbow" was Kat's best move. True, she did an amazing job on it last week, but with that performance still fresh in our minds, she needs to make it a little different. I did like "Black Horse & a Cherry Tree" (or whatever it's called); ironically, I heard it on the radio yesterday. Anyway...

I'm happy with Taylor's choices. I loved "Levon" when he performed it in the semis.

As for the crappy original songs, well, it wouldn't be an Idol finale without one. Although you've gotta wonder if the producers are trying to send a message with the song titled "My Destiny"...NO. I will NOT give in to conspiracy theories. The way I see it, it's anybody's game. I will vote tonight, but I haven't decided for whom yet.

You might be right since only a certain amount of calls are going to make it through anyway. I just think that they are going to get recording contracts anyway. Personally, I think it's great for Chris and Elloitt that they left the show when they did. They won't be forced to record pop songs that might not fit them (I think Bo is a good example of this). Anyway, as always, opinions are worth about as much as someone is will to pay for them!! Good luck to all of you who will try to vote!

I basically agree with everyone's sentiments on the "Over The Rainbow" choice. She had a "Moment" as Simon likes to call them, and that is often a one time thing that can't be repeated. As for "Black Horse and the Cherry Tree", she definitely can't be on the floor again for that one, especially if she sits again for Rainbow, so she needs to take a new approach or else it's just going to come off stale, in my opinion. I'm dissapointed that both of them didn't have enough guts to risk a new song.

I don't think I'd take a risk either. They're both going to get contracts but you don't want to be the one who forgot the words, or missed kicking the mic stand or...wait! They've done that already! Ha-Ha

I am one of those annoying loyal voters who voted for the same 3 people all season no matter what - Taylor, Katharine, and Elliott. Tonight, I might actually do something different and vote solely on the performances of the evening.

Thanks Jennifer for your fun site. Who's out there who can now do So You Think You Can Dance justice on the web??? Point me in their direction!

Cathy, Did you vote for all three last week? If so, can you tell me why? I know a lot of people that vote for all of them to see if they can get through but is there something more to multi-voting that I'm missing?

Disappointed Kat will be redoing Somewhere Over the Rainbow this soon, I think something a little further back would have been better. Hope she does it well though (hope they both sing well tonight on everything). I seem to remember not being hugely thrilled by Taylor's Levon either but it has been a while, I will have to listen to it again when I get home tonight. I like both of their upbeat song choices.
