50s minus one equals 10...

We're cutting the field to ten tonight, the ten who will tour the states this summer. And to do that we're gonna have to sentence one of the kids to a plane ticket home, not to be seen again until it's time for the annual Brady Bunch number in May.

Because THIS is American Idol.

And this is a simulblog, filled with misspellings and general grammatical ickiness, because it's live, blogging as it's happening, with publishing as soon as the first of the bottom feeders gets pulled off the sofa. So, if you don't want to be spoiled, you might want to look away.

Ryan says 35 gazillion votes were called in last night. We get a video reminder of last night's performances, as usual, and we get to revisit Poola's unusual behavior. About five minutes fewer in the retrospectives and we could get a crappy group number since they've seemed to chuck them in place of celebrity appearances. And, apparently, Barry Manilow is in the house.

About 10 fewer commercials and we would have time for the entire freakin' summer tour.

But the kids have got the beat in the cheesy Ford commercial. Now THAT was a commercial, complete with Kevin "the Love Machine" buried in the sand.

Manilow takes the stage, gushing about the kids. He really is a true gentleman. And he's performing Love is a Many Splendored Thing. What a glorious song.

HEY! It's Bobby "Copacabana" Bennett, standing, doing the wave in his Manilow worship. Ahh. That's nice. The kids have seen him and they're doing the Bobby love. Well, okay, they're laughing. And Bobby gets to go on stage to hug his man. Ahhh. I like this show.

But I'll like it better after the break.

And so the kids are lined up like little soldiers on the sofa of death. Idea: maybe one night they can put them in dunk tanks, and, instead of a boring "you're safe," Ryan can just hit the target, dunking their butts. We gotta liven up this show, after all. Predictability gets old.

Ace is first, since he was last last night, and he's safe. Mandisa is safe. Elliott is safe. Thank you America. Kellie wants to know what "ballsy" means. But she's safe anyway. Chris is okay.

Paris will continue and so will Katharine. And since Ryan's gone to Taylor, Kevin, Lisa and Bucky are the bottom dwellers.

And it's after the break.

Lisa escapes once more, getting sent back to the couch.

Paula babbles about how both Bucky and Kevin can star alongside Jennifer Hudson in Dreamgirls and little Kevin is told he's going home. He gets a big hug from Bucky and then from Ryan. We see his funeral tape, again to the Bad Day song, and he is much cuter now than he was during the audition.

He says he loves America and gets to sing his swan song.

Dang. The show just ain't gonna be quite as cute from here on in.

I thought for sure the tweenies would keep Charlie Brown for a few more weeks.

I can't believe he outlasted Melissa.

It seems to me that with the exception of Bucky, the competition is basically wide open. Among the other 9, there isn't anyone who you look at and say, "Damn, that person sucks."

Each has some strong points and some weak points, but there is not an Anthony Fedorov, Scott Savol, JPL or John Stevens among them.

I don't know that the competition is wide open. I think Chris, Taylor, Mandisa, and Katharine are the Fab Four. Elliot & Paris are wild cards. Lisa, Pickles, Ace, & Bucky are going to spend alot of time standing at center stage on Wednesday nights the next few weeks. If Ace doesn't bring his "A" game very soon, that crucifixion pose he strikes at the end of each song is going to be very appropriate.

And the peasants rejoiced!!!

Thank you America for finally getting rid of Chicken Little! Although, in all fairness, his performance this week was better than Lisa's. However, she's more talented overall. But I still contend she is made for Broadway, not AI. No worries; she's not long for the show.

And thank you, thank you, THANK YOU America for keeping Elliot in!! I did my bit and voted for him til my fingers bled. He's truly an amazing singer, especially when you consider that he has 90% hearing loss in his right ear. Unbelievable! It's hard enough to sing when you've got two working ears!

My top 3 choices are: Chris, Elliot and Taylor. That 4th spot can be filled by Katherine or Mandisa. Kat is more of the vocal technician while Mandisa is the heart and soul. I enjoy both of them immensely. Will hate to see either of them go...but alas they all must eventually make way for my main man: Chris "I Wanna Rock" Daughtry.

I would have preferred to see Bucky leave before Kevin.

For me, Marissa, Elliott, Bucky, and Ace are the lesser of the remaining 10.

Don't cry Jennifer, I'm sure we'll see Kevin on Sesame Street singing to Big Bird or something...maybe Zoey after she gets a splinter.

we all knew ace was gonna go eventually, but still. i don't think last night was his night. if anything, i think lisa shoulda gone. i hope we get rid of her next week, i'm sorry lisa fans, but i'm not a tucker fan.
and two nights ago, for kevin, he had a pretty good performance. i don't think the final 10 will be the same without him. did you guys see paris's face? she was shocked. i was shocked. come on, you're all gonna miss chicken little. i don't care if you didn't like him, you know there's a little part of u that deeply was in love with the american idol "sex symbol." in any case, kevin was definitely the joker of them all, and american idol, contestants and viewers alike, will not be the same without him.

Thank you Danielle. I'm gonna miss the little stud muffin.

And next week will be Ace. I'm tellin' ya. He was in the bottom week one; went pimp spot week two. He'll be a goner next week, just like Amy and Jessica before him.

The trend will continue...

Is it me, or does Lisa look a lot like Kimberly Russell, from Head of the Class. (for those of you youngsters, it was a show in the 80's)

Kevin did deserve to go home. He was a lil' cutie, but he was not that great of a singer.

And Ace is almost worse than Kevin IMO. Yes he is nice to look at, but....

This competition is truely between Chris, Katherine, Mandisa, Elliot and Taylor.

We definitely have two classes at work. I agree that Chris, Kat and Taylor will be there in the end, but I fear for Elliott. Ace is not long for this show. Neither is Lisa or Bucky. Kellie is a question mark. One more ballsy comment and some of her fans will sour on the act.

Makes for a great show!

I really like that arrangement of the song, but, frankly, I'm not a big fan of Johnny Cash. [ducking]

I understand the theme is Songs of the 21st Century. I assume that means anything released since Y2K.
Additionally, it means that the contestants can return to their strengths. Chris can find an alternative rock song that fits him. Taylor can do John Fogerty or Joe Cocker since they have both released albums after 2000. Bucky and Pickles can find some honky-tonk music while the others will look for something they find interesting. We will hear a variety of music for sure.
